People are always asking "what's a good free spriting program?"

Until my new computer gets here, I can't use photoshop to work on METROID:SR388, so I've been digging through every freeware graphics program out there. They all sucked... then, one night, I struck gold, and I finally have something excellent and free to recommend.

It's called Graphics Gale Free Edition. It's made for spriting and has quite mature features, including layers. It's also fast, rock solid and has never crashed a single time on me.

You won't find advanced painting tools and filters etc typical of photo editing apps like Gimp and Photoshop, but it's good  for pixel art. It includes animation features as well.

Mister ...
I hope to God it works for Vista. Please work for Vista ...
Looks like it might work for Vista.  Awesome.  Maybe I can use this for my Senior Project class  :-D

Edit:  BAH!!! I can't figure out how to save the damned images as .gif files.  It won't appear in the drop-down menu when I save  Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
Damned free stuff never has the good features.  Should have guessed >.<

I disagree. The freeware version has a ton of good spriting features and is capable of serious sprite work.

Just use something else to convert to gif, not a big deal.

Try the freeware Photoshop clone ArtWeaver for .gif conversion. ArtWeaver sucks for pixel art though, as it lacks a simple solid-pixel drawing tool (they are all funky brush/sponge/gerbil simulations). But it's fine for saving all your .bmp's to .gif format.

Or... I dunno, buy something. I'm just trying to be helpful here to spriters who are too cheap to buy stuff, and too honorable to pirate stuff.

Very true  Embarassed

I downloaded a 30-day trial of the full version.  I suppose I can just delete the old files and re-install them when I get that far.  I checked out the program last night and it's pretty cool.  I plan on making a new avatar with it when I get the time.
