yeah so in case you hadn't heard, i'm in japan, and i had a goal to use my time here to obtain japanese versions of the three current metroid games to complete the version differences sections (or start them) for those games.

i was successful and even got some additional stuff, too! believe it or not, i was told that both of those games in the second picture are 'new' (never taken out of their original boxes) ...

so yeah, going to try to 'complete' the version differences sections for all three games before classes start in three weeks.

edit: prime 2 isn't out here yet, so that one was out. sorry. ;-[

Don't you need another GBA for different country's carts? I think the GC is the same though.
reverse those; then it's correct. i have a freeloader for the copy of prime already though (thus the pal videos in the v.diffs section for prime 1).

I heard Japanese versions are WAY harder. Tell me if that is true.
well, we know that there is the zm style easy/normal/hard difficulty in fusion. i might do a run of fusion in one of those settings just as a demo more than anything if i can get the time to do it. otherwise i expect the gba games will be more or less identical to their north american and european/australian versions, with the exception of the one v.diff in fusion to fix the alternate secret message method.

as far as prime goes, katogisan mentioned something about geo core that i am very interested in confirming. it's something that would be unique to the japanese version of the game, meaning i would have to carefully go through the rest of the game and test for any other unique changes the japanese s.breakers did not notice. (the japanese version is otherwise thought to be identical to the pal version, except for the japanese language option, obviously).
Wow , the Japanese packaging kicks so much ass.  I'm quite envious.
coming soon: a picture of the boxes with my hand in it. you would not believe how small they are.

not sure that really does it justice ... these cases are small. good stuff.
Holy crap!  Shocked
I bet you feel like a giant...  Laughing
especially frightening was the shoe store that was using the entire center of the store area as shoe storage, with only about an average japanese person's amount of space left for people to walk around the outside. one wrong move and down came 3439492304234239 shoeboxes!!!!

edit: i did not actually make a wrong move, but it was still pretty frightening. curse girls and their shoe obsessions.

Hey, "curse..." is my catchphrase, you thieving person.  I envy your Japanese games.

I'm interested in that Chaotix game. It looks pretty wicked.

But I'm more interested in the version differences of the Metroid games.

Heheh, yeah, I held one during the preview showcase in my local EB games store. But iirc they're made out of cardboard, right? I really prefer the plastic dvd boxes as the cardboard tends to break more easily.
The Japanese GC games have a cardboard sleeve over a plastic case.  Basically the same as the domestic GB Player disc box.  I can't figure why they went with that size for the US one, messing up my shelf organization by making me keep the box with my JPN GC games. =P  Games with pack-ins like Nintendo Puzzle Collection and Four Swords Adventures (both of which came with link cables) have large external boxes holding both the CD case and the cable, of course, but 4S at least also had the cardboard sleeve around the plastic case.  I don't remember whether Puzzle Collection did.

The GBA boxes are smaller than the US ones in two dimensions, but longer in the third, if that's not obvious from the pics.

identical to the us version afaik. at any rate, i plan on keeping it new in case as a collector's item. :)

Some Japanese MP version difference confirmations for you at least (from where I've played my Japanese Copy):

* The stalic(mite?) in Geo is indeed gone! You have to use the dash off the puddle spore to make it to the first spinner. It looks a bit wierd not seeing it there. :?

* The intro text is light blue

* There's the option to switch the visor text to either Japanese or English (but not the main text)

* The game uses the US Original version loader, so Frigate escape times (for example) WOULD have been identical if it were not for the fact that the scan dash was removed.

I think that there are possibly even a few more, but I can't remember them just now.

That just made nate's purchase pointless.

It's stalactite if it's hanging from the ceiling, stalagmite if it's coming up from the ground.

Then it IS a stalicmite. I was right with that guess :D
as far as that, I bet nate is finally glad to have every version of Metroid Prime ever released.
He's still missing the 0-01 NA NTSC release Rolling Eyes.
The one where you can use super - secret techniques to skip the missile launcher?  :D
(is actually a mystery if anything is different)
Nate, you absolute bastard. Japanese version of Chaotix. I envy you, very much. *goes to rob Nate's house*

EDIT: Heh, first time I've gotten the filter on a word unintentionally. *goes back to robbing*
