Along with my unfinished TAS. :P I know I'm not all that godlike, I've played electric guitar for a few months now. I put new videos at least every month there, I'll most probably put part of Children of Bodom - Kissing the Shadows solo there tomorrow.
Thread title:
red chamber dream
The fact that you can sweep pick reasonably well after just a few months is fairly impressive, but I'm puzzled as to why you're putting videos of yourself just practicing onto the web.

As for the playing itself, you should work on getting it much smoother and eliminate other noise from the pick/strings. I could hear a great deal of scrapes and scratches that shouldn't be there. Keep working though; you're sounding great for someone just starting.
Many people put videos of themselves practicing sweep picking there, it's just that people see the progressing of some guitar player.

For the note: I've played acoustic guitar for 5 years and I have a teacher for that, but electric guitar I've learned all by myself and it was pretty hard to change to el.guitar after 5 years since you make noices like that so easily on acoustic guitar. I've been working on getting smoother and cleaner playing, I know no one really wants to listen playing that goes fast but doesn't sound good in general. :P I got some problems with my picking technique every now and then, nothing a good couple of hours a day of practice can't fix.

Thanks for the comment. :)

I think you're doing pretty well, but it seems like your timing is always a little off.

And a little vibrato every now and then wouldn't hurt. Wink
I uploaded 2 new videos there, a classical song called Études simpled and some improved 3 string sweeping I came up with.

Comments are always appreciated. :)

You are at least as good guitar player as Super Metroid player. grin new

I watch/hear your street fighter songs. Nice job man.

I play guitar last time almost 7 year ago. laugh new  I suck about this. laugh new
Thanks Master. :)

I've uploaded 2 new videos once again, a classical peace called Studie and the legendary 2nd solo from Children of Bodom - Sixpounder. Hope you enjoy if you decide to watch them.
Well, last time i checked your sweep video was down.  I am in the same boat as you though, i've only been playing about 4 months and I can play Canon Rock full speed.  The only parts I have trouble with are the 5 string sweep+tap just before the chorus (getting better) and the tremelo picking, just because it takes extremely accurate rhythm.  I'd like to see you cover this song  grin new
Actually the "big sweep" isn't tapped, but even funtwo did it this way because he and I find it easier. I took the sweep picking video away because it was pretty bad seriously, I luckily realized this. I'd really like to see you cover the Canon Rock.

I'd not like to see myself covering this song, as it wouldn't be very cleanly played. I don't play Canon Rock that much these days, there's this other song that I like to play even more. This one I can actually play cleaner than Canon Rock, all the parts I've learned so far.

By the way, there's new video I added recently, Sultans of Swing solo check it.

AHH, I had totally forgotten about that song by Petrucci.  I'm definitely going to be looking up the tabs for that (can't read sheet)

Edit:  Playing now...Man, I still can't believe I forgot about this song...

P.S. I know there's not a tap in the sweep, but there's a tap after it which is hard to get to on time because its on the high E string just after sweeping down to the 5th string.  But I can actually do it pretty fast now (not 200 BMP though  :()

Ill give that video a watch later
I play that Petrucci's song every day in the hope that some day I'll perform the Glasgow Kiss live somewhere. That's one of my biggest dreams in my whole life. The solo part which comes after the soft section is very very very hard though, it takes a year or two more for me to be able to play it clean. You'll see me cover this clean some day. ;)

Again according to notation (which I'm using) the big sweep doesn't include any kind of tapping anywhere, but funtwo modified it so that it's easier. We might be using different tabs though.

Also I don't mean to be offensive in any way but I find it hard to believe that you've played 4 months electric guitar and can sweep clean and fast. I've played el.guitar for like 9 months now and I still have troubles with sweep picking often.. I'd like to see you play something, can you take video footage?

I've been playing guitar for 3 years, and I can't sweep pick. Then again, I've never really spent much time trying.

I've been playing guitar for going on six years and can barely do sweep picking. I don't practice it much, but still. It's hard.
None taken.  Keep in mind that people learn at different rates and everyone practices differently.  Is it possible that I just practice the technique more than others?  I'm thinking this is the case, because i've been practicing guitar for 2 hours a day at the absolute minimum for the past few months.

During these little sessions, I usually end up practicing sweeping for sometimes hours at a time with the metronome going.

For this reason, you would be undoubtedly better at other techniques, such as clean playing and chords, because I practice sweeping more than anything else.

Its all about how one chooses to play.

Also, a natural rhythmic sense and musical talent helps as well  laugh new (You can tell when someone lacks one of these)

Anyway, yes I can make some footage for you if you want.  I'm going to wait though.  Remeber how I said i've only been playing for 4 months?  Well, i'm still using a crappy 10 watt RockTron.  My Vox is coming in the mail, and i'll make some vids when it arrives.

Nah, I suck at chords, too. ;)

About the only thing I can do well is play lead, as when I first got my guitar all I practiced were solos. I'm an extremely fast player, so when it comes to playing rhythm I suck... unless it's power chords.
Well, who wants to play rhythm anyway?  Only lead players get the chicks  aiwebs_008

Really though, I suck at chords as well.  From everyone i've talked to, though, my understanding is that they are much easier to get consistent than hard solos.  Especially if you're trying to play them clean.

Since I'm such a nice guy I did Canon Rock for you ICheatAtGolf. :) It's not that 端ber-clean be prepared for that, but this was filmed first try, I didn't feel like trying it too much.

Notes:
I was too lazy to get laptop from downstairs so instead of the backing track there's funtwo's canon playing in the back.
The big sweep also wasn't that good, probably the worst part of this attempt.
This isn't the full song, only the first half. I recorded the second half too but as I haven't really learned that it was mostly improvising and crap.

Ahh, this vid is awesome!  I'm being honest here, this is cleaner than a lot of the canon videos i've seen (especially the main "rock" part after the intro) with some dedication you could probably be be one of the top viewed canon rock videos...but then again, maybe its just because i love the tone of whatever you're using  laugh new

As for the big sweep, meh, i've seen worse.  I've also seen people use cheap substitutes for the sweep, and sometimes even just stop playing (during a live performance, for god's sake!) instead of doing the sweep.  Lame eh?

How long have you been playing, anyway?

Edit:  Ahh, after reading the topic over, you've played acoustic for 5 years?  No wonder its so clean ;) Don't take that the wrong way, its hard to get a clean sound out of an Electric if you've been playing Acoustic and not worrying about string noise.

When I get my cover up, just don't expect it to be as clean as yours. :P
Thanks a lot, if you're wondering the tone... It's... The almighty MicroCube!  aiwebs_016 It's fucking awesome. It has all kinds of tones and effects, delay, reverb, chorus, tremolo, phaser, all.

Yeah I've seen the worst sweeps on Youtube too regarding this Canon Rock. I think mine was pretty bad still no matter what. I don't sweep that much.

Acoustic guitar 5½ years, electric guitar I got this year I think it's around 9 months now.
Well your playing definitely reflects that practice time.  OMG Micro Cube??? I was going to get that  Evil or Very Mad hopefully the Vox that's currently in the mail will turn out good as well.  (I've heard good things about it)

In case you're wondering, its the 50w edition.
UPDATE!

Note:
Anyone who's been watching my guitar videos around here (not many...) really don't want to skip this one, it's my first video playing Dream Theater and at the same time the cleanest guitar video I've ever done. Some have mistaken the guitar to the original track, here it is:

Enjoy.
