A version of the eagerly awaited Xbox game, Halo 2, has appeared on net piracy sites and newsgroups, almost a month before making it into the shops and Microsoft has said it is trying to track down the people behind the pirated copy.

In a statement reported on BBC News today, Microsoft said it was investigating the leak, adding that it was "aggressively pursuing the source of this illegal act". The copy in circulation is reported to be a European version of the game on DVD, which is almost three gigabytes in size.

"We consider downloading this code or making it available for others to download as theft," said the company in a statement. "We are currently investigating the source of this leak with the appropriate authorities. Microsoft takes the integrity of its intellectual property extremely seriously."

Halo 2, due to go on sale worldwide in the second week of November, is expected to sell millions of copies. At the start of the week, the game's makers Bungie Studios, which is owned by Microsoft, said work on the title was complete and the game was ready to go into production.

I can't beilive how stupid people can be sometimes.. Hosting torrents for the download, thats like screaming "COME AND GET ME!!!"

If you have any information that might help microsoft against it spreading further they said that you should contact: piracy@microsoft.com

Not sure what to make of this. Even though I could probably easily find it somewhere I still am far from tempted to download it. Never liked 1, not gonna like 2 one more bit either. However, it is a very bad thing that it has been leaked prior to release.
Kind of takes the wind out of the sails of developers. And quality of games has been deteriorating enough as it is, without people ruining it even further by taking the bread out of the mouths of the developers and as such making developers less inclined to create truly remarkable games.

Shame I don't have any information to share with Microsoft on this, I would be more than willing to do so. Had I any leads on the source. I do not however.
lol. just says 'didn't take appropriate precautions' to me. obviously keeping people from releasing it early wasn't worth it to them.

and what's this i hear about needing to hack it to play in 60 hz (e.g. on ntsc tvs)? is the european xbox really incapable of 60 hz, or is it just halo 2? either way, sounds like a pretty ghetto system over there to me ...

European XBOX is no different from the NTSC version, it fully supports 60Hz and everything. I think it's just Halo 2. Or maybe just this leaked version. I am unsure. However, the XBOX is more than capable of it.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Halo should be compared more to Half Life now.
Whoa, this isn't suprising considering that most "popular" games are leaked to the internet before it is out (usually shortly after it has gone gold). Of course, I'm not tempted to download the game since it's on Xbox, and I don't have a crappy Xbox, nor do I want one.

Edit: although this is a little bit unusual due to the fact that it's on a console. I've never known of a console game being leaked before release. Of course, since it's an Xbox game it might as well be on PC so I guess it's not all that strange.

FF Origins was leaked a couple months early, and Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission roms were out before the carts..
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
Pfft.  Cheaters.  I'll wait for it.
Pffft. Waiters. I'll cheat for it.

<_<

Ready and willing.

Well, yeah, but those two were ROM'ed shortly before their release date, when Nintendo was probably already cranking out carts. Don't know about that FF one though.
They have this on slashdot...
Apparently it was taken during the manufacturing process most likely. A company shouldn't have to have armed guards or strip searches in their own facilities to stop a game from leaking.
I like this comment:
Quote from Visceral Monkey:
I hear in the French version Master Chief surrenders to the Covenant within the first 10 minutes of the game anyway. Problem solved.
Oh, it's that guy

Laughing

so....so....true

but I would of thought that with such a hyped-up game, they could have at least given the employes some gun licenses and could be ordored to shoot anyone who doesn't work for Bungie...
A friend of mine downloaded that. Oh well.

why not? it sounds like a simple supply and demand question to me: if the price of getting a copy early is getting shot, people probably wouldn't steal it before release anymore. maybe. depends on if the shooting occurs before or after playing, i suppose.
Someone spoiled the whole and complete plot of Halo 2 for me =(

I feel so crappy now. It's one of the best twists in game history more recently.

If anyone wants to know, tell me and I'll PM it to you. Although I don't know why ANYONE would want it spoiled.

Sure, PM me it. Wouldn't have to bother actually playing the game then to know this supposedly marvelous twist... ;)

FFO was released in the US in May or so, and I think the leak was out around February.  Some magazine reviewer or something leaked it if I remember.

Yes it could, but with one difference: Half-Life was a good game.

I meant it in how Halo and MP are compared all the time (stupidly).

Maybe HL2 and H2 can this time.
What the heck, I'm curious.  Tell me teh spoilers please.
Oh, it's that guy
Don't tell me, I'm a halo fan! *gets shot*
