I haven't played this game in about a year, but the other day I was thinking about it. It's probably my favorite RPG of all time (even better than ToS, becasue while the battle system in ToS was awesome, I thought this game was more challenging, and had a better story (plus it was longer)). The story is the best in any RPG that I have ever played, with the perfect mix of action and romance. I thought it was great how the enemie's  levels are based on the average of your party's levels, so you can't just train to level 100 to easily beat everything. Although the game was very complicated at first, after I understood it all, it became the most enjoyable of all, because of all the unique features. Side quests were great (getting all the GF's, Ultima and Omega weapon, and the card game) and the lenth was perfect (I wonder if they'll ever be able to make never ending games?). Post your thoughts on this game, and if you don't have it, get it!
Thread title:
I didn't enjoy it.  Didn't like the characters or the story much, and the setting just wore on me after a while.  The battle system was actually pretty interesting, but without being attached to the characters or events, the battles didn't really do much for me.
This is my third favorite Final Fantasy. It's a good game, though the storyline sucked.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
There's a topic in this section somewhere about FF8; my thoughts of it are in there.  Short story: one of my 2 least favorite FF games (other is 7).
Armor Guardian
I'm not an RPG guy but I think that this is my third favorite FF game:
[list=1]
  • FF6
  • FF4
  • FF8
    [/list:o]
Oddly enough, those games are even numbered. I wonder how good FF2 and 10 are?

I don't pay attention to the plot very much so I don't care that the storyline sucked. The fact that enimies level up with you, and the junction system are definite pluses to the gameplay.

Red Scarlet, I agree that FF7 isn't good. Materia = worst magic system ever.
  • I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
FF2 is generally disliked because of it's unique (to the series) levelling system, which then spawned the SaGa/FF Legend series that started on the Game Boy.  I personally enjoy the game quite a bit, but most people usually do not.

FF10 I had my doubts about, but when I finally did play it, it wasn't as bad as I had imagined.  However, the International version (rerelease in Japan/Asia/the PAL version of 10) is much better, IMO, because it allows you more customization of characters right off, and that's one thing I usually go for in games; variety.

If you have a GBA, FF2 on the FF Advance package I enjoyed, but they screwed up part 1 in it, IMO.
    1. FF 3 (aka FF VI), the perfect FF
    2. FF VII, the almost perfect FF - it had spelling/translation errors
    3. FF X, good storyline, good battle system, far too short and lame final boss... not to mention the most lame villain of all time (Seymour).
    4. FF IX, something about it I liked. Not sure what.
    5. FF V, lovely... JOBS! JOBS RULE! Pretty OK story...
    6. FF VIII, only marginaly better than the horrific X-2
    7. FF X-2, what is this? Who snorted too much speed one night?

These are the FFs I played (FF:MQ doesn't count, although I did play it several times, quite a nice game). Out of all these FFVIII is my 2nd least favourite one. The storyline in itself was pretty good, a pretty good dark SF-ish story. The battle system sucked major balls (Junction... what?!?!?) and the final boss was the most pathetic one I've ever seen in any FF. A silly tart with a fake accent (Kurse all SeeD!!!) and no face (final battle). Who grafts herself onto her pet puppy (Griever) and starts blabbering about time.
Also, I loathed Squall, he was a whining dork. And the Laguna "cutscenes", I hated too. But, the storyline itself was pretty damn good. Which is why I place it above X-2. X-2 was just a joke. I think we've been had by Square-Enix. ;)

EDIT: And, by the way, none of these are my fave RPG. My fave RPG, which happens to be my fave game ever.... is The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
I didn't really like VIII all that much. It cuirrently ranks as my 2nd least favorite (it used to be the least, until I played X-2).

FF IV: Still my favorite to this day. Nothing really unique to it I just liked it (maybe its beacuse it was my first RPG)
FF VI: Esper system was excellent, and the story was great as well. There were, however, a couple of exploits/weapon combos that were a bit too easy to take advantage of.
FF IX: Old School yo. Thopught the story was good, and the skill system was a nice touch. Phear the Black Mages!
FF Tactics: I thought was a great deviation from their usual work. Tactic games like this are (almost) always great in my books. Only thing I think they shouldn't have done is have the cameo appearances from Cloud and Aerith.
FF VII: It was still a good game, but IMO this was the first one to deviate from being a "fantasy" and pushing more toward Sci-Fi.
FF MQ: I thought this was a nice deviation from the usual series, and the story, which cliche, was still OK.
FF I: Was good for it's time, and is still good (the remake for PSX helped a lot) today. I still, however, dislike the magic system.
FF X: Seriously wasn't as bad as I had expected, and was great the first playthrough, but just didn't have all that much replay value for me. I also thought most of the voice acting was done well, except for Tidus and Yuna.
FF V: I can't really put my finger on it, but this one just didn't grab me like some others did. Not really sure why.
FF VIII: I played through it once, and only once. The magic system reminded me too much of FF I, and the junction system was just whack. GFs played a bit too much of a role, Squall was annoying, and WTF was up with the lack of equipment? Not to mention the story was just wayyyy too sci-fi.
FF X-2: OK, someone was smokin' da peace pipe a bit too long, mon. The job system, while a good idea, was very poorly implemented in this one. Felt like I wa splaying dress-up and not an RPG.

FF II + FF III, FF Legend I-III: Haven't played III at all, and haven't played enough of II to give it any sort of rating. Also haven't played any of the Legends.

Enix had nothing to do with FFX2; it was the last game finished by Square/last game released with the Squaresoft logo before their merger (by about 2 1/2 weeks).

Offline MMORPG's scare me just as much as online ones.  :(
VIII was good but not great. I never really got into the story much, and many of the characters where pretty forgettable. I think the best aspects of the game was the soundtrack and the atmosphere.
I would much rather play the older games. FFIII and VI rule you all!
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
They "fixed" the MP system for 1 in the GBA version (one of my gripes with it; the game as a whole is pathetically easy, and you feel like you have a Gameshark hooked up directly to the cartridge).  FFX2 was pretty fun when I played the Japanese version; I guess that's largely in part to not knowing what the characters were saying.  It can be a bonus sometimes.
I guess I'm just weird, cause I'm apparantly the only one who really likes this game. Rolling Eyes
I like it too, but that may have to do with it being the first FF I played.

I wonder what I would think of the game if I were to start playing it again.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
I liked it when it was the new one, since I really did not like 7, but after 9 came out and playing Tactics, I realized I didn't really enjoy 8 either.
    Viking
    Precursor
Well - FF8 is one of those games I never have played. Never owned a PlayStation. So when it comes to Final Fantasy, FFVI is as far as I go. FFV is my favourite, thanks to the job system not making it completely monotone.
I hate all Final Fantasy, I only plaied CC but god knows its salf to judge them from that one game. =]
Only ever played three FF games. 3/6, 2 and some 3D one for the PC once. 3/6 was very good, but soooo not my style... I simply cannot understand how people find eternally levelling up in order to pass one super-long battle entertaining... Then again, people have said the same about me and Jet Set Radio Future... Great series, but I happen to hate it because of personal opinion.

Woah.  That's like hating the Zelda series after just playing Link's Adventure, or hating the Mario series after just playing Mario 2, or even Mario Party.  Seriously, Crystal Chronicles is nothing like any of the others.  I suggest you try one of the SNES ones; they're all good, with 6 being my personal favourite.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
You don't really need to level up anywhere in 6 though.

Chrono Cross is not a valid comparison with FF's tho.

    Ready and willing.
*blinks* Oh... you misinterpeted CC. Fair enough, seeing as how he didn't prefix it with FF, plus you don't keep track of new games.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
Oh, Crystal Chronicles.  Either way, neither that nor Chrono Cross have much to do with the FF's in how they play and stuff.

? I'm getting Dragon Quest 8 at the end of this month, and MP2 for Christmas..that seems new to me.  :o
    Too many fangirls to count
    ff8=theworst ff game ever
    ff6=the best
FF7: the only FF game I've played all the way to the end. I thought it was rather nice. Although in the PC version (that I played), the backgrounds look really washed out and crappy. But still, I enjoyed it despite its many flaws.

I have the PC versions of FF7 and 8. I know FF8 is in working condition but I don't know where FF7 is. Unless I'm mistaken, the backgrounds are washed out and blurry (it's called craptastic JPEG compression) on the PS version.
