I think temp. bans would be a good thing, as long as someone who gets too many gets perm. banned eventually.  If they just keep coming back, it might be kind of obnoxious.  Although I don't think it would really make a difference to me either way, and I would be fine with or without them.

The most we'd do for a user would be one-- giving someone more than one chance in this case is just ridiculous.

I highly doubt we'd ever do them anyway, though, so don't get your hopes up.
This site doesn't address a broad enough userbase to bother with convoluted ban proceedings, IMO. I'm normally in favor of giving everybody more chances than necessary, but come on, it's a bunch of speedrunners and their buddies shooting the gunship in their spare time. Does it really matter if Jimmy Jerkweed gets kicked out of our clubhouse?
probably not.

however, this means that the rules i wanted for the individual-game forums ("my" part of the forum) are actually spilling over now into the social half. and i have to say it feels a lot less awesome than i thought it would. old habits die hard and all, you know.

Then fix it. You're nate; you've never let anything like this stop you before.

And bring back user ranks.
Wait - if user ranks are sexy (which they are), and Nate brings them back-- *head asplode* JHANKE TIMBERNATE

Seriousness, though, why not have different rules for game and social areas?
PAGE BREAKER
Ready and willing.
Because that requires coding.

...huh?

No; just code for the least restrictive ruleset, then enforce more strictly in the game areas.
the amount of confusion in this thread is inspiring.

there were different rules for the two halves; now they are collapsing, with "my" side (the actual sequence breaking/speed running related metroid game forum stuff) taking over. and this was none of my doing -- saber and yoshi are the ban crazy ones, with fork agreeing. trh wouldn't agree if he were still an admin but he basically left me here with the hawks.

I liked user ranks, though I'd be satisfied with just the return of post counts.  They made the forum more fun.

I don't agree (and I think I voiced this same opinion with their demise…) that you took them away because of ONE person who thought they meant something.
my umbrella goes directly to Bankai
i don't miss the post counts. i've forgot about them since long ago. i was actually surprised to see my post count and how much it was when i checked my profile some weeks ago.

user ranks... well, they were removed like 1 month after i joined so i don't remember them well.

Way to just add to the confusion. :P

I would be willing to go for looser rules in the social areas and being more strict in the game forums. I only agree with Yoshi and Saber because of the current way the rules are written.

How's that?
Oops.  I changed that sentence around too many times.  It was supposed to mean that user ranks made it more fun, not post counts.

Post counts give me a better idea of how long (and how much) people come around.
displaying both post counts and ranks will be user-toggleable with the upgrade to phpbb 3 final.
I like the idea of post counts.  But it seems to me that user ranks would encourage spam, when it really shouldn't matter.  Some people would think it matters, though, which is why I think the spam count may go up.
spam is deleted on sight. both post counts and user ranks will be off by default.
Speaking of phpBB3, is there any progress on the move, or is it delayed until further notice?

We've already been over that.  Did you read the rest of this thread?

final isn't out yet. see phpbb.com for more.

Nope.  Will do.
Well I didn't see this on the list of rules, but what about advertising your own website?  If it was posted I didn't see it.

PM me.
