Users can no longer delete their old posts. You couldn't on the old forum either, except now you can't delete your post if it's the last post in a topic (you could with phpBB). This is a limitation of SMF, so we really can't do anything about it.

If you accidentally double post, just let a mod know via a PM with a link to the post. Note that the "Report to moderator" button won't work because you can't report your own post to a mod.

Well this is kind of odd, i sometimes post in the wrong area or accidentally post when im not trying to sometimes. Its been nice to go back and delete right away so i didn't confuse anybody or accidentally bump an old topic.
guess you'll be more careful now. :)
red chamber dream
It's either we let users delete any of their old posts, which is dangerous, or we disable post deletion altogether. Like I said, just ask a mod to delete a post you accidentally made somewhere, and he'll be happy to oblige.
Cook of the Sea
Hint:  whenever you want a post deleted, bug ark.  He'll be happy to oblige.
And does the post actually get deleted, or moved to a hidden board?
red chamber dream
Does it matter?

If a post is just something like a double post, we just delete it. If the poster is breaking a rule, and we feel we need to preserve the post for discussion about what to do (warning, ban, etc.), we'll move it to a hidden forum and discuss it there.
for clarification, the posts padrino deleted really were deleted. restoring them is probably possible, but i don't feel the need (either from myself or from others) atm.
I wouldn't ask if I felt it didn't matter.  The standard operating procedure of simply moving posts instead of deleting them can cause unintended and negative consequences if, say, the intent of deleting the post(s) was to preemptively lower the temperature of a thread before involved parties see the posts and respond (rather than for rulebreaking or other disciplinary concerns) but the involved parties are privy to the board to which the posts were moved.  This is not a theoretical example.

(n.b., I did not have padrino's missing posts in mind when I inquired.)
Cook of the Sea
Generally heated up shit doesn't get deleted at all, it gets split into a new thread in a public board and/or people are told to shut up.
red chamber dream
Yeah, I'm having trouble remembering of an instance where we would've done that. You'll have to remind me; shoot me a PM.
Cook of the Sea
To clarify:  shoot him a looooooooooooong PM.

I don't believe you yourself were involved, Ark, so detailing the specifics won't help. The point of bringing it up is: do we have assurance that should we, the non-mods, request deletion of posts because we cannot delete them ourselves, they will in fact be deleted and not just moved to a venue where we can neither see nor respond to further commentary which may nevertheless affect us?

Ready and willing.
Er, generally we're not going to delete posts on request at all, except when someone accidently double posts. In which case, it'd be pointless to do anything but delete it.

What Yoshi said–– I don't recall saying anything otherwise. Saber was just kidding when he said "whenever you want a post deleted".
Cook of the Sea
Well, I wasn't kidding, but I did mean only for that reason.

I not understand why you not can delete your own posts. Couple weeks ago this working.

I make one post in wrong topic: I delete my writes, but i not can delete my post
http://forum.metroid2002.com/index.php/topic,2285.900.html

Anyway. Hopefully you can delete your own post in near future. :|

Deleted.

The old board system let the user delete their posts only if there had been no replies to it. This system let you delete any post of yours by default. It's been discovered that this freedom can become a problem (kindly demonstrated by a certain previously mentioned user), so the "problem" has been "solved" by disabling that feature for normal users. This system doesn't currently check for replies before deleting, but as our forum is still under construction (or redecoration, I guess), it's not a high enough priority to truly fix it.

In the future, just PM a mod if you want a double/triple post deleted.
Speedrunner
Ok.

But i think this is faster way get contact moderators than PM IMO.
I don,t sure who moderator visited mostly here. I think Nate or you.

But thanks your info Ark. Wink

If you PM me any time during the day (EST) I'll respond almost immediately. But it's not like an accidental double post is that great of an issue, so not having it deleted right away isn't a big deal.
This topic isn't really the place to ask for your posts to be deleted; it's just an announcement, which is why I want users to PM a mod if they need a double post deleted.

MASTER-88: Judging by your stats page, looks like I'm on pretty often as you first sign in, and Yoshi tends to sign in near the end of your sessions. DJ's activity seems pretty evenly dispersed, but that doesn't say much because he's not as active as us (the bars measure percentages, not time). Ark's on most often, though, but he's probably asleep during the times you double-post so it may take some time.

It's too bad you can't report your posts using the report button. Can that be fixed? It could make things a lot easier.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

First, it doesn't matter to you one damn bit if it's flat out deleted or moved. Neither will affect you in any way, shape, or form, except your post count will or will not change. OMG CALL THE POLICE!

Second, it's the mod's prerogative to decide if a thread is moved or deleted. You don't need to be assured of jack. If the mods, for some reason, need to discuss your post, THEN THAT'S WHAT WE'LL FREAKING DO. If you don't like it, you are by no means required to post here.

I can, however, assure you that if a post is moved to a hidden forum, only mods will be able to see and comment on it, and no one else.
