I wouldn't like having old topics locked automatically. They don't hurt anything by just sitting there, and users can always bump them with something important to say. Works fine to me.

Yeah, but it must get really annoying when people bump them for no reason, which is why I wondered why mods didn't lock them.

yes, but it seems as annoying for people to make new threads because the old one was locked. of course, they do that anyway...sometimes i feel like there should be a rule about posting 'what's your favorite metroid game' or something. (though it's much more applicable on other forums that i go to. i just hate seeing three hundred posts on the same topic.)

I agree with that. If a topic is locked, it's cos no-one wants to talk about it no more. So it seems pointless making a new one, cos it'll get locked too.

Usually if a topic gets locked, and another topic just like it is created, that topic will be locked, too.

Maybe some people create the topics because they don't realise that an older topic just like it was locked. Perhaps a list of all locked topics would prevent that? (It was something I saw on www.samus.co.uk)

no real harm done if it happens, though. we just lock the new topic and warn the person for making a stupid topic. :P

It'd be a little slack though if, say for instance, a new guy makes new topics without realising they've been locked before, and then gets warnings and probation etc. because he didn't know that the topics he was making had been previously locked. I suppose some are a little obvious (such as a Draygon Grappling Beam topic) but it would help to avoid accidents, and punishing users for making topics they thought would be good.

Well, I highly doubt a user would get probationed for making new topics identical to locked ones. The biggest "punishment" would be a mod locking his topic and telling him to read older topics before making new ones. No harm done, as Nate said.

I got a valid question concerning bumping.

The thread is dead. However, your post is the last post made in that topic. Now say that even though it's dead, we still have something to add. For instance, if I had a post where the last post was mine and it contained part of a run I was doing. I finish the run, so I go back to the dead topic and edit that last post to include the rest of the run. Since it doesn't move the topic up any, is that still a bump?

Hope my point was clear...

Well, at SCU there's a bit in the rules expressly stating that "multiple posting is invalid after a period of 5 days" - meaning, if you have the last post in a topic, but it's more than 5 days old, then another post is okay. Mind you, we still prefer the edit button to be used, and we do warn folks who are blatantly bumping topics that nobody wants to read.

Checking through the m2k2 rules, I saw no such mention of the 5-day rule. It DID say that if you are going to bump an old topic, make SURE you do so with a substantial, intelligent, meaningful post. Didn't say anything about what to do if you would be bumping it with a double post (with the 2 posts separated by several weeks). My advice? Find a mod/admin who's online, and send them a quick PM. Explain the situation, and ask if they think the topic bump is warranted. You'll find that the great majority of mods are nice people, and will be quite agreeable if asked this kind of stuff beforehand. Wink

Yeah, we don't have any set day limit (which was on purpose), as we mods would rather decide for ourselves whether the bump/double post is valid or not. In your case, DeathNoble, that bump would be perfectly fine. We actually encourage you to bump a topic that you created or one in which where you last posted if you have made significant progress on something. This includes runs, artwork, etc. Making a new topic just to continue something like that would be silly.
Note that just editing your last post is fine, but I doubt anyone would see it. You may actually make a new post to bump the topic back to the top.

Also, like Monster wisely said, if you're not sure whether you should bump or not, feel free to PM me or another mod/admin asking what we think.

There's also a way to bump your topic without multiple posting.
...
1. You want to post in an old topic. You have a valid reason for doing so. But, you were the last person to post in the topic.
2. Click "edit" on the last post (your post).
3. Highlight all the text in the post. Click Ctrl-C for copy.
4. Go back to the topic page. Click on the "X" to delete the last post (your post). Confirm the deletion.
5. Go back to the topic page and refresh. Your post should be gone.
6. Click "post reply".
7. In the window, hit Ctrl-V for paste. All the text from your old post appears.
8. Add some dividers, giant "EDIT" text, whatever floats your boat.
9. Finish the post with the new stuff you'd like to say.
10. Submit the post.
11. Back to the topic page, and there you go. The topic is now bumped by a brand-new post containing both the old and new info, with no unsightly double post to muck things up.
