On a small planet not far away lived a strange race. A long time ago all the members of that species had one of three eye colors: blue, green or brown. In some point in history a famous war took place, initiated by the blue and brown eye faction. They genocided all green eyes, thus eliminating the green eye color from their race, and reducing the population of the planet to a few hundred. Soon after that war the factions were disbanded, and eye color was from that point on considered an inappropriate topic. Some rules were later established for the benefit of the whole society, so that something like this could never, ever happen again. The rules were as follows:

1. Nobody is allowed to talk about eyecolors.
2. If anyone gets to know his own eyecolor he must commit suicide at midnight in the town square.

Now I must explain the way this species was thinking, so you understand their reactions later on. You must understand that they all were really strict about those rules. In the beginning some people happened to accidently see their eyecolor in some reflective surface or puddle of water, and every last one of them faithfully comitted suicide the night after. After a few incidences all mirroring surfaces were removed from the cities, to minimize the risk. Also, this species was a very logical thinking. Although they still lacked knowledge in some areas, they thought clearly and logically, and trusted in the results they got, even if it led to their own death. Last, the way it worked after the rules were established was that everyone knew the eyecolor of everyone else on the planet, but not his own. Of course, on a small planet like this, they all saw everyone everyday, so a suicide was immediately noted.
Well, the people on this little planet were living for a few hundred years in peace and harmony, when something bad happened:

A little spacecraft crashed down in the desert near one of the large cities, leaving a big crater. Immediately the friendly people tried to rescue the astronauts, but it was too late. The only thing they recovered from the craft was a book about mathematics. In the same night a big meeting was called on, and everyone came together in a large hall. The book was read to the whole population, because it offered new concepts that were so impressive and striking that everyone had to know about them. But, knowledge isn't always a good thing. The knowledge in that book made the people aware of facts they didnt know about before, and made them realize a few things. In the following nights everyone was really nervous.

Then, in the 250th night after the dreaded meeting, all brown eyes committed suicide, thus eliminating the whole species, and leaving the planet an empty brick in the wide universe.

Questions to answer:

How many blue eyes were present at the meeting?

Were there more blue or brown eyes at the meeting?

Number of nights in which suicides happened?

Which mathematical concept made them kill themselves?

-------

That riddles been stumping me for ages.

whoah... nice... im sure that someone can figure it out...

ill try to think of an answer...
I've solved a variant of this before, known as the "green monks puzzle". I won't tell you the answer, but the method lies in the fact that the population are able to make deductions based on the fact that nobody has committed suicide yet.
There's also a variant based on unfaithful husbands that I solving awhile back.  I guess my hint will be sorta like DJ's, and say that you should look at it when the riddle is at its simplest.

Actually, I think this variant is missing a piece of information that makes it work... it's ridiculously overcomplicated anyway. However, it does make for some awesomely ridiculous Google ads...

lol :P

i had said that i thought it was missing a piece of information, but then i edited that out, thinking that "250 days later" was enough to deduce the amount of people if you knew what the equation was.

Yeah, the population size is not in fact the missing piece of information I'm thinking of.

It might still be possible, but I'm not sure. I'm no good at thinking outside the box though.

Wait, where does it say anything about the blue-eyed people killing themselves?

And how does such a small planet have enough gravitational pull to keep these dolts on board?
in the name of justice!
low population =/= small mass, ark.

My post != serious, spine.

That's my favourite riddle.  :)

I don't think it's missing any needed information, as far as I can see.  :/

in response to ark, if all of the brown eyed people committed suicide, there could only be blue eyed people left, meaning that they all had to commit suicide because they all knew their eye color.

How can that be so?:

The bolded portion (specifically the "thus") suggests that the deaths of all the brown-eyed people are what finished the species, which means that the blue-eyed people would have had to kill themselves before the brown-eyed people did.

Also, how would the monks know for sure that all the brown-eyed people had killed themselves? What if all or some of them thought that they themselves had brown eyes?

no, the statement "the brown eyes committed suicide, thus eliminating the whole species" is implying that because the brown eyes committed suicide, the entire species was gone shortly thereafter (it never said when in the 250th day the last brown eye was gone).

and yes, i believe that this is missing a vital piece of information...

I get the same feeling from reading that part. On day 250, the remaining Brown Eyes all kill themselves, leaving nobody on the planet. To me, means that there weren't even any Blue Eyes at the time that the Math book showed up and they were all Brown Eyes. (Because there weren't any deaths between Day 1 and 250 correct?)

It does say a few hundred years passed between the death of the Green Eyes and finding the Book right? Couldn't the Blue Eyes not exist anymore due to genetics and such? I'm a little fuzzy on this, but aren't Blue Eyes a recessive trait or something like that? With the population being only a few hundred people, couldn't they eventually all end up with Brown Eyes (which I believe is the dominant trait) before finding the book?

And here I am, in the middle of summer, thinking of old Science classes... laugh new

that is actually very logical thinking, though i doubt that the person who would have made the riddle would have incorporated that into the solution...

if there is only one blue/brown eyed person left, then the whole species is out, as the one blue/brown eyed person would see the entire rest of the population, and see that they were all of blue/brown. Therefore, the thought going through the person's head would be "if they're all brown/blue eyed and not dead, i must be the last blue/brown eyed person. Therefore, since I know what color eyes i have, i have to commit suicide".

and it would go downhill from there.

EDIT: There are many deaths between days 1 and 250.

Yes, it does... the suicides are all at midnight.

The crucial stipulation is that there is at least one person of each eye color on the planet as of the time the math book is found.  Had the story not specified that centuries passed we could assume the people who read the mathbook are the same ones who were involved in the genocide, but since the lifespan of the people is not mentioned, there are no grounds in the wording of the riddle to assume that there is at least one of each eye color present -- which is necessary to solve the puzzle.

no, it says during the 250th night, not at midnight on the 250th day.

EDIT: NVM.

-it says that there are a few hundred people.
But aren't all the Green Eyes dead when the book is found, due to the killings?

Edit:

Here's something I've thought about;

If nobody knows their own eye color, then what's stopping them from breeding each other? I mean, couldn't there be beings of two different eye colors? There's also the fact that it doesn't mention how many eyes a being has.

But then again, if a brown and a blue eyed "thing" had a child, that would mean that the parents would both have to commit suicide, since if the child has blue eyes, the blue eyed parent would be forced to commit suicide, since beacause the other parent doesn't have blue eyes, it would mean that him/herself had blue eyes (given that eye color is hereditary), and thus would know what eye color it had. And as for the other one, if it would know that it's mate was going to commit suicide beacause it knew it's eye color, that would mean it would realise that it had the other eye color.

Then again, that all depends on breeding methods, raising, and other crazy stuff that probably has nothing to do with anything
(user is banned)
or it could be that they dont breed at all, and that they're just immortal... (but not invincible).

i know that someone is thinking "no sex at all? THATS TORTURE!".

that would explain their only decreasing population, how it never rises.

and if that were true, that they actually did have children (and committed suicide as a result), the math book wouldnt have made a difference in that, meaning that if that were to happen, each family would have to have twins of opposing eyecolors anyway, leaving it null and void.

also note that green, brown and blue were all separate before the war.
Mister ...
What I want to know is what was in the math book that cause the remaining of the species to kill themselves.
Quote from Lazylen:

Where does it say that? I don't see it, but I could be wrong. I thought it just said everyone was nervous between day 1 and 250 after reading the book.

"leaving a big crater"!!?
That's before they read the book though, because through the crash is how they GOT the book. I don't see it specifically say that there are any deaths after reading the book until all the Brown Eyes kill themselves on day 250.

Edit: And we're probably going WAY to deep into this trying to figure it out... laugh new
