There are plenty of them, and I can only name a few. I have 1943 for NES, which is great. Probably one of the many first ones. I also have Gigawing2 in Japanese (WHICH I CAN'T READ!) for Dreamcast, and Zerogunner2 for DC (also Jap) and Gunbird 2 for DC, and I really want to get Ikaruga.

Anyone else think these games are awesome?

Tiger Shark!

God, that game ate up my quarters like no tomorrow. I played 1942 for HOURS and the stages just kept coming and coming and coming...

Do sidescrollers count, or only top-view ones?  One of my favorites is G-Darius for dreamcast or playstation or something.  (I don't have it, my firend does)  You can use a tractor beam thing to pull an enemy ship in, which will then fight for you.  Then at any time, you can use that ship to fire a beam three times as wide as your ship.  The exaggeration is the best part.
I remember this airplane game for the NES. It was a warplane I think, and you could power up the bullets by grabbing this little symol that fell from enemies. You could eventually get some gun that would make you practically invincible, but If you die, you lose your powerups.

It scrolled upwards. Which game was this? I had a blast.
Dodonpachi for arcade. That game is stupendous, and I don't know why.

Sadly, even with all that, I'm pretty sure there's at least 3 or 4 games that fit that description.

enjoy ^_^

I highly suggest tumiki fighters, warning forever, Cho Ren Sha 68k, Noiz and R-rootage.

all free and for PC, and they even run on my crappy computer.

likewise, theres a name to this genre, its called "Shmups"

Hmmmm. Let's see what else I can remember.

The powerups were like double shot, triple shot, etc. up to 5 or 6 I think. The ememies were mostly planes. They flew in formations similar to some of the early space games (Not space invaders but, something..... uh.....I can't remember the name). Sometimes there would be cannons or tanks on the ground, that sort of threw you off your groove, while the plane formations came in.

I never could get past level 3. Level 2 (i think) started over an ocean.
I'm thinking is 1942, or 1943 or some one of those

I've been trying to get ahold of a copy of r-type 3.  I heard it was one of the best shmups for the SNES, i actually haven't played it yet.

Those scrolling shooting games are awesome, I could play those for hours.
If you're talking about Tyrian, wait till you finish the game and play through it again ;) You'll like the ship upgrade
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
No, they're called shooters..and I've played R-Type 3 on SNES..was alright, but it is widely regarded as a very crappy port/game in the genre on the Super.

The more common term is 'shmups.'

Never heard that term before in my life, always shooter.  :o

Maybe now..but back when I was a kid..shooters.

"shumps" came from shoot-em-ups.

yeah, i was thinking of "Super R-type" not R-type 3

R-type 3 = crap
super R-type = great.

no matter.

anyway, the term is "shmups" took me quite a while to get used to as well, but "shooters" now seems to mean a more FPS type of game.
soaking through
I've never played R-Type 3, but Super R-Type owned.

I've been trying to find a copy of Ikaruga for quite some time now, but no such luck.  No shop has it, and it seems no online shop has it in stock either.  Apparently there was something by Treasure (people behind Ikaruga) called Radiant Silvergun, that was the best shmup ever or something.

Radiant Silvergun came out for the Sega Saturn. I think it had the same colour changing thing as Ikaruga. The problem with games like Ikaruga is their not in the shops long and when they are sold out they don't come back.
Ok you know what sucks? I can't play the first 2 Tyrian because my computer's too powerful :(
