I made a thread for this. Zero Mission is a much more route-heavy game than Fusion, so one person will not be able to make a video tutorial like the one I made for Fusion any%.

The one I made for fusion any% is here as an example - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3pBMjeS6rYhtLVGWtLoCeD7C2aZrkl9n

We want to make a ZM 100% tutorial just like what I made for fusion, except give all the possible options for newer players. Fusion any% was easy for me to do alone and without prior planning, because I didn't have to go over many route options besides which extra expansions to get (I also know metroid fusion way better than ZM); ZM is completely different. Thus we should actually plan this out first; lay out all the routes, the pros & cons of each route, and so on.

I'll list out different routes, and the pros/cons I know about them (+ is pro, - is con). I'll update as people with more knowledge post about it.

Late Long Beam

+Ultimately faster
+Shinespark after long beam to tourian
-The hive room can be very dangerous and slow without it
-Several rooms becomes slightly harder/slower

Late Charge Beam

+Ultimately a tiny bit faster (~0.5 seconds)
-Some areas are harder to deal with without Charge, particularly breaking the block after the worm corridor

Brinstar Cleanup

Early (The Dragondarch Route)
+Extra e-tank and near-full ammo before kraid
-Annoying bomb jump right after bombs

Late (The ZX Route)
+No annoying bomb jump
-Need some missile drops for acid worm, assuming no AWS
-One less e-tank

Acid Worm Skip

Do AWS
+Right side of Kraid is much faster in cleanup
+lol acid worm with plasma beam
+Significantly faster (~10-15 seconds)
+Possibility of skipping refill before fighting Kraid, thanks to skipping acid work
-horizontal bomb jump ; VERY DIFFICULT
-Mess it up once, and you lose the time you would've saved

No AWS
+Much much easier and more consistent
-Slower right-kraid area, and slower acid worm fight
-Need 30 missiles for acid worm
-Marginally slower

Kraid Cleanup

Early
+About 10 seconds faster in RTA
-Requires having at least 8ish missiles after acid worm
-Loses 3 seconds in-game

Late
+No need for missiles after acid worm
+3 seconds faster in-game
-10 seconds slower in RTA
-Messing up the space boost can cost several seconds

Ice Beam Route

Early Ice Beam
+Much easier imago cocoon
+No need to walljump in the Ridley single pillar room
+Exiting the Ridley fight is much easier
+Slightly faster missile tank by entrance of Ridley
-Ultimately 5-10 seconds slower
-Traveling through upper-right norfair is a bit slower

Late Ice Beam
+Ice Beam area is faster and smoother with screw attack + hi jump
+Ultimately 5-10 seconds faster
-Harder imago cocoon
-Need to walljump the single-pillar Ridley room
-Need to IBJ out of the Ridley fight
-Fire enemies in norfair take more hits to kill by the beam

Norfair Cleanup Route

Upper Cleanup
+Easier to pull off
-One less super missile before Ridley
-One more heated room in Norfair before Ridley

Lower Cleanup
+Extra Super Missile Tank before Ridley
+One less heated room in Norfair before Ridley meaning more viable to do norfair without refills
-Getting the super missile tank requires a difficult bomb jump out of the lava
-Skipping the worm e-tank leaves you without an energy refill for imago cocoon

I think I do an overall decent job of explaining things, at least in my fusion any% tutorial; I just talk a bit fast. But anyone else knowledgeable enough can feel free to co-commentate or something. Or if you have any criticism on how I commentate for tutorials, post here as well so I can be better :)

RESERVED FOR SEGMENT PLANS

Part 1: Intro & Basic Mechanics
-Definition of 100%, final item count
-Single segment vs. segmented; RTA vs. in-game time
-Beam, missiles, super missiles
-Spin jumping mechanics
-Power Gripping
-Wall jumping
-IBJs (single and double; vertical, diagonal, and horizontal)
-Space jumping
-Shinesparking, Ballsparking, & Space boosting

Part 2: Starting Brinstar
-Discuss Geemers in first room
-Discuss Long Beam route
-Cave Worm fight (double missile?) then missile management for hive room
-Discuss zx vs dragondarch route after bombs (show dragondarch's route)
-End on entering Kraid

Part 3: Kraid Area
-Mention acid worm skip, then go to acid worm area. Remember to mention missile requirements before entering acid worm area for zx's route
-Acid Worm 2-round strat; after killing acid worm, discuss early/late kraid cleanup and mention missile requirement for early kraid cleanup
-Demonstrate early kraid cleanup
-Falling shaft before kraid; backup strat for it
-Kraid strats: double missile per jump vs single missile per jump
-Zipline with giant flies, demonstrate bomb strat if low on missiles
-Discuss late/early collection of charge beam (shinespark strat if late charge beam)
-End on entering Norfair

Part 4: Norfair before Ridley
-Early shinespark strat (easier but loses RTA)
-Diagonal vs. walljump+horizontal shinespark strat for super missile tank
-Discuss early/late ice beam route while returning to Norfair; demonstrate early ice beam
-Discuss upper/lower norfair cleanup routes; demonstrate route for both
-Image cocoon fight with and without ice beam
-End on entering Ridley

Part 5: Ridley Area
-Pretty straightforward in terms of routing & strats...
-Map Skip
-Demonstrate the two diagonal shinesparks
-Demonstrate three rooms that change with/without ice beam
-Emphasize super missile drops; refill if less than 6 supers by unknown item
-lol ridley, lol imago
-End on exiting Ridley after imago

Part 6: Pre-Tourian Cleanup
-Don't move too far left for the shine upward of rightside norfair
-Demonstrate ice beam area for late ice beam
-Demonstrate ZX's brinstar cleanup route
-Demonstrate late long beam, which using zx vs ddarch's route shudn't matter?
-Regardless of Brinstar Route, go to Tourian
-End on entering Tourian

Part 7: Tourian
-Emphasize importance of super missile drops
-Quad missile + single super vs. double super strat on mother brain
-Don't forget the speed boost while running against mother brain
-End on escape

Part 8: Stealth
-Map skip
-YOLO vs. no-yolo
-After getting caught, discuss crawl-then-walljump strat vs. get caught intentionally
-Mention back-up strats for unintentionally getting caught, as much as possible
-Charlie Fight, mention constantly running/jumping so it won't shoot lightning for 2nd/3rd round
-End on getting suit back

Part 9: Chozodia
-Risky & fast vs. safer & slower strat for shinespark to e-tank
-Emphasize power bomb management; do NOT use any power bombs except where tutorial tells you to!
-Maintaining shinespark through underground chozodia strat
-End on entering Tourian

Part 10: Non-Chozodia Cleanup
-Remember for tourian space boost: do NOT hold left or else accidental power grip
-While traveling in Brinstar, talk about power bomb management. Tell viewer to not use any power bombs outside of where I use it, but if there are any drops, then mention what other possible spots there are.
-Demonstrate late kraid cleanup
-Demonstrate upper vs. lower norfair cleanup
-TAKE THE CANNON IN NORFAIR
-Groan about the most annoying PB tank ever, and rant about some trivia
-End on leaving Crateria permanently

Part 11: Endgame
-Talk about shinespark upward for e-tank before entering main area of chozodia
-Different strats for right chozodia cleanup...?
-Mention space jumping for last e-tank but recommend against it
-Iron Ted Fight. Jump to make it swipe; spam supers after swipes. Beam/screw attack its missiles.
-Mention bombing the door. because it's so important.
-Super epic ballspark for chozodia escape
-End on escape
Question: so Part 2 will go over the start of the run, aka everything in Brinstar, before Kraid. Now this is where one of the major route changes are: early vs. late brinstar cleanup. The quesiton is, when I go over ZX's route, do you guys think I should have a video of doing the upper brinstar cleanup within this same video (even though it's after ridley?) or should I just mention it, and then have a video of it at a later part?
One thing you forgot for Early vs. late Ice:
Missile tank near the entrance can be gotten quicker by freezing the Zebbo and jumping up to the platform. You have to jump to manipulate it's height, but it seems slightly faster to grab that way.

For Brinstar route: Mention ZX's late cleanup, but show the video/talk about it before Tourian. Keep this section for Initial Brinstar only.
Upper Cleanup
+Easier to pull off
-One less Super before Ridley
-One more heated room in Norfair before Ridley

Lower Cleanup
+Extra Super Missile Tank before Ridley
+One less heated room in Norfair before Ridley
-Getting the early Super Missile Tank requires relatively difficult tricks
-Skipping the worm corridor E-tank leaves you without an energy refill for Imago Cocoon

Late Long Beam
+Ultimately faster
-The hive room can be very dangerous and slow without it
-Many of the other areas in the game are a little bit harder to deal with

Late Charge Beam
+Ultimately a tiny bit faster
-Some areas are harder to deal with without Charge, particularly breaking the block after the worm corridor

Not sure if speed differences for the Norfair routes can be added. The top one is faster route-wise, but loses time to lack of supers, so I dunno. I personally feel the top one is faster and easier no matter what, though, and should be recommended.

Also, great topic and task, Kirby. If there's anyone who can make a kick-ass tutorial for this game, it's you.

Brinstar Cleanup

Early (The Dragondarch Route)
-Refill takes RTA time

Zx route has more doors, so this is pretty much a non-issue.

EDIT: Also, I was thinking more of a serious, in-depth script. Something like:
Morph Ball room:
-run left, possibly kill geemer in the ceiling
-if geemer on the floor crawls to the left you should be fast enough to just jump over it, but you might want to kill it if you're unsure
-if geemer on the floor crawls to the right you can barely jump over it if you're fast enough, but it's sorta inconsistent and taking damage means more time refilling on the first statue
-you can kill the geemers on the floor without stopping but it's fairly hard, jumping over them is a decent substitute
-a geemer could crawl onto the door, if you're fast enough you can open the door before he gets to it and he'll stay on the ceiling, otherwise, you need to kill it.

Room 2:
- Morph before entering door, quick unmorph->shoot->morph to open second door
- Jump up on blocks, dodge geemer, shoot door, morph in the air
- ^These are pretty much equal in time, one is heavier on execution, one requires you to react to an enemy^

Room 3:
- hold right, try to morph in the air above statue hands

For every room in the route. Like actually writing it out and letting everyone give feedback before recording anything.
Well, he can't really show all the RNG strats in a tutorial video anyway, without actually recording, like, two or three videos of each room. I think it may be a little hard to verbally describe what the course of action should be, if the RNG is different from the one in the video too.

That said, for some rooms you could make a mention of the RNG, if it highly influences the room strat, or if there's some way to counter the bad RNG.
Hm that would be a huge task and I don't think it's quite viable to be THAT detailed. That being said, if enemy placement changes the room strat significantly, then yeah definitely.
Yeah, I think it's essential to keep the tutorial light. If you cram too much detail into it, I feel it takes away from what's actually important when it comes to running this game. A lot of the small stuff is something you pick up on automatically too.
Do we know exactly how much faster late long/charge beam are? IIRC dragonfangs said that late charge beam is about a half second slower (so most people will think it's worth it) but I'm not sure how much faster late long beam is
Regarding AWS.

"+Ultimately faster (but not by much)
-Mess it up once, and you lose the time you would've saved"

Pretty sure the AWS route is actually one of the biggest time savers of current routes. Like, it should be a matter of 10-15 seconds. This also means, you can mess it up once or twice, or whatever, and still be able to pull ahead.
Also dragondarch, can I possibly get advice on how to get the IBJ consistently after getting bombs, to get up to upper brinstar?
I can give you a noob tip for that one: use Single Bomb Jumps. You can do them pretty fast still, and the advantage they give you is better control of your vertical speed, which means if you notice a turtle is gonna block you, you can just slow down for a little while (essentially doing HBJ timing to stay at a stand-still).

Think it should be ok if I use emulator? I don't see a problem with it, and it'll make demonstrating route differences MUCH EASIER.

Also, I'll primarily be following the easiest route in terms of major items (aka early long/charge/ice beams), but of course demonstrate their late versions as well. If I primarily follow the late versions, then I can't demonstrate long/charge/ice beam strats before collecting them :P

EDIT: If you're doing late long beam, do you just go grab long beam from above after cleaning up brinstar?
Sure, use an emulator, it makes no difference to the tutorial whatsoever, and it makes things easier for you :)

Also, if you do Long Beam Late, you grab it the regular way: go through the door, grab the Long Beam (refill at that station if you're low on Supers for Tourian), then go through the upper path straight into Tourian.
yeah I meant go to the long beam room from above in the vertical shaft, after getting the last missile tank in brinstar (the one between the two huge vertical rooms)
Well, that actually depends, but generally speaking that is what you do. The only way to avoid doing that is what Mobiusman suggested in that 100% route topic (and what the TAS does): you grab that tank on top of Brinstar immediately after getting the Varia-tank in Dragondarch's route. It basically breaks even either way, so I dunno if this is something you even have to mention.
Ok I laid out a draft of what I'll go over in each part; please look over it and make sure I'm not missing anything crucial route-wise! ^^;

Also, for lower-right chozodia cleanup (around where the map is), what other strat is there besides the long speed boost & space boost?
I don't think there is another strat for that part. Like, the last part is just a straight, long hallway, and you'll build up the Speed Boost there regardless of what you've been doing (if you don't hit a door or something). So it's just a matter of either doing the Space Boost, or not doing it, I guess.

The top part, however, can be further optimized by killing that red pirate in that gate-area with a power bomb, and building up the Speed Boost only on the bottom-floor, instead of doing shinespark refills. Also, for holding the Shinespark from up-top, I dunno if it's better for RTA to morph through the small opening on the right (in the area with the Red-door), or to just drop to the left unmorphed and go from there. I guess it depends on how fast you are with morphs and unmorphs.

Also dragondarch, can I possibly get advice on how to get the IBJ consistently after getting bombs, to get up to upper brinstar?

Realistically, it's all a matter of how fast you do it. As long as you don't miss any bomb jumps or the lone wall jump, you'll get past the rippers every time. The only RNG factor is the Geemer on the first platform, since he can sometimes be kinda in the way.
If you bomb jump at the right spot the geemer isn't a problem either.
Is there a video of the consistent way to do that room? <_< although I might just recommend doing single BJs instead since I suck at that room, and newer players should stick to single BJs :P

The consistent way is "Do it fast, don't screw up." It's not really a hard room, save for the fact that it's Bomb Jumping, and you're sort of timed.
And I'd recommend against recommending single bomb jumping, since it's really in their best interest to learn double anyway. Mention it, sure, but I'd make sure to stress that double bomb jumping is faster, and when explaining route and tricks, do it with double bomb jumping in mind.

Quote from samthedigital:

Yeah, that's why I said "kinda in the way." I've found that if you enter in morph ball form already, and start bombing as soon as possible, that he won't be in the way.
Yeah I plan on doing the tutorial with double bomb jumping for the most part, while only demonstrating single bomb jumping in the first part.
All right, if there aren't any objections, I think I'll get to work on the first part for now.

I don't really want to use a twitch recording to export to youtube though since it's... very iffy. Does anyone know how I can record while commentating at the same time without relying on a stream recording?

(I could do a local stream recording, but then xsplit puts a watermark on it... does OBS do that?)
