The following excerpts come from the most recent Nintendo Power issue, which features an interview with Nintendo's Yoshio Sakamoto...

- "It's certainly possible that in the future we'll go back to another 2-D Metroid using some of the ideas that have been generated on this Other M project. So please don't get the idea that this is the end of 2-D Metroid games."
- "There were certainly some members on staff who weren't entirely comfortable with committing us to a single control scheme, so they would ask questions like, "Couldn't we just make it possible to connect the Nunchuk and have an alternate control scheme in the game?" But I felt like that was essentially the wrong way to think about it. Like if you have to tack on other options like that, then you really are admitting defeat as a game designer. ...I felt like I really needed to prove something about why this was correct for the Samus universe in the first place."
- "We (Nintendo) would set forth a lot of design limitations where we'd say, "This is what a Metroid level looks like," and set those forward as prescribed ways of doing things for a Metroid game, but these guys (Team Ninja) had all of their own ideas from working on so many 3-D games recently that there was the opportunity for a lot of fermentation between the conflict of our two ideas. During the development process, I was going to Tecmo every single week to play the latest build, and I was shocked by how much the level-design concepts were changing and evolving."
- "I've come to think of her (Samus) almost as a daughter. I helped her grow up and I want to take her to as many high places as possible. I want to make sure that when she's in a game, she always has the chance to look cool and look really beautiful, and also that she has the opportunity to experience new challenges. So her development as a character is really the most important thing to me, and as I mentioned, this is a "serious touch" game. It might sound strange that I have such strong feelings for the heroine of a game, but I hope those feelings aren't out of place."

Thread title:
I love how the idea of another 2D metroid keeps coming up and they keep responding. That makes me confident that we will see one made.  I can't really see them making it for DS.  Hunters was a tragedy and kinda ruined the idea of metroid for DS/touchscreen.  I doubt they produce a 2D game on a wii disc, so I'm inclined to think that it should be a wiiware release.
I completely understand his comments about how he feels regarding Samus. I've been working on and off on a sci-fi story/world for quite some time now and I've become very attached to my main characters at this point.

Regarding the 2D comments, that is great news indeed. Games have proven over the last year or so that 2D still works if done right, and seeing Samus return to her roots would make a lot of people around here happy I'd bet.

this is just like Metroid's comeback in 2002. people asking for it continuously is what made them make new ones back then.
so if people keep asking for more 2D Metroid, chances to actually get it increase.
i'd place my bets on Metroid 5 for 3DS followed by a Metroid 2 remake for 3DS. the DS is in its last legs, 2D games don't really catch on on consoles (2D Mario is a massive exception) and wiiware is home only to cheaply made games and VC (i don't see them putting a serious effort up there anytime soon unless they prove me wrong).
the DS to 3DS jump should end up like the PS1 to PS2 jump in sales, support and popularity if everything goes on like it should, so it should have a sizeable userbase by the time they make the game.
a 2D Metroid with some 3D effects would look rad.
i guess mega man 9 and 10 are another massive exception.

3rd parties have put more recognizable efforts on VC. i was talking about nintendo mainly since they haven't put a major game themselves on Wiiware/DSiware yet.
also, mm9/mm10 look cheaply made... *ducks for cover*
i don't give a fuck about cheaply made. is it a good game? mm9 is a good game. they can make a good 2d metroid for cheap. we all know this.
There's 'cheap' and then there's 'lazy and apathetic'.
Bananas GOOD, Kremlings BAD
There's also "status quo" and "uninventive".  If Nintendo wants to make more of old IP's then I want a lot more innovation and direction.

I wonder just how restricted Retro was and Team Ninja are to create new Metroid elements and not just rehashes of older ones.
I'd say Retro were allowed to go nuts. I hope Ninja was, too.

i very much doubt that, actually. seems like nintendo was probably breathing down their necks the whole time. think that's part of the reason they went back and fixed so many of the glitches for the pal and pc versions.

player's choice

that acronym is source of so much confusion lol.

think it's safe to say that's why we use it. ;)

Yeah and that worked out so very well!
I meant in the beginning. Then the Big N prodded them and whispered "do it again" from the shadows.

I meant Prime's beta Ark.

his argument still stands.

not entirely sure how...

That "beta" he's showing is AFTER Ninty had it's hand in it.

I'm talking about the Beta Retro had before they got Nintendo's "okay go ahead"
dunno, i think this one looks worse.

i was just posting a screenshot of the other m beta because it looks hilarious and people were talking about metroid betas.

Not a thing wrong with that!!
