I found this rather interesting. I know at least one person at this forum wants to work at a video game company and I recommend that you read this.

Ouchie, 85 hour work weeks! Shocked
Thread title:
Wow, and Canada's EA headquarters is only about 30 minutes away from where I live. So people this close are living this badly.

Although I have to admit the review seemed a bit exaggerated.
Yeah, but they make kickass games.

*Looks at MoH: PA*
This is the nature of big coprorations. They've turned into giant beasts that try to devour as much money as they possibly can, with no regard to anything else at all. And obeying the law or not is simply a business decision to them (profit vs. loss if caught), not something they "must" do.

Yeah, I hate it as well.

I do think this was a bit exaggurated but I don't doubt that EA is overworking its workers.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
I knew a guy who worked at Namco, and another guy that worked for Jellyvision and 989; that's a typical work day when a game is almost released in like every company it seems.
I know quite a few game developers myself, and that is indeed "normal" practise in this line of business. It's a job filled with stress and pressure but it can also be alot of fun when everything goes smothly. It's hard work and it's not for everybody, but it's important for you to support the game developers by paying for the games you like.
Having a crunch time before a game's release is one thing, that's understandable.  But having "mini-crunches' throughout development  to avoid a big crunch that happens anyway, then foregoing all comp time, that's quite another.  And people wonder why there's so little innovation in the industry.  You can't be innovative if you're exhausted.  Your heart stops being in it.  10 to 1 that Nintendo doesn't treat its employees like that.  That's why they come out with such nifty things.  Even though their innovations are a flop sometimes, I respect them for making the effort, that I do.  Imagine if EA and Namco level innovation were the best you got in gaming.

And oh yes, update  to the topic at hand.

EA makes crap anyway, that's what you get for working for them.

I concur.  I don't think I own a single EA title, in my entire video game collection.

EA is a publisher. Like most publishers, they almost never make anything (EA is one of the few that attempts every once in awhile and fails). So, stop giving EA all the credit!

The ones I have were all given to me, and I've never played them.  If you count Square-EA (wtf was that about), I have 1 or 2? and have either never played it (Brave Fencer Musashi[den]), or played it for an hour (Parasite Eve).

They made a couple ok games on my old computer (Amiga) though.

I associate their sports games with them, since no other name appears on the box/commercials for them.

And since their name does get stamped, IMO that counts.
All publishers start off as developers. Once they get big, they stop innovating and start pushing around smaller developers to make stuff for them. It's an endless cycle of crap :(. And sadly, there doesn't seem like a breaking point (look at how Valve degraded).
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
And THQ.

Oh, wait, THQ always sucked.

I don't get why Rare had to employ THQ to make Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge. They almost ruined the game.

THQ didn't make BK:GR.  They just published it.  It's Rare's own fault for making BKGR suck.

THQ made(?) WCW vs NWO.  They're cool in my book.

They're involved in a lot of wrestling games these days, which are all the same, but still good.

Shocked You own brave Fencer Musashi and haven't played it?  Shame shame shame!!!  You must die!  How can you own and not have played that god given glory, good golly!  I recommend you dust off your old playstation 2, put it in and prepare yourself for an unusually good time!  Or else... Twisted Evil ... Rolling Eyes

Have Electronic Arts done anything except for sports games or games based on movies (namely, LOTR) in the last... ten years?

Last good game from EA I remember is Urban Strike.

That was for the Mega Drive (Genesis), though.

They publish the Sims, cause I think they own Maxis now.

They've owned Maxis for a long while. Since before the first Sims came out, IIRC.

IS.  OVERRATED.

In my opinion, of course.
