re: chat threads

i still don't think this is a good idea.

first of all, what is a "chat thread"? i'm trying to think like a new user here. so ok, i'm not allowed to make long posts in here? what if i want to see people's avatars? i mean, this is a forum after all right? if i wanted to use irc i'd use irc right?

have to remember that tf is a forum primarily. it just lets you do a lot more than what people typically think a forum can do. at least that's the current paradigm afaict.
when designing chat mode i specifically didn't want to lose any forum functionality. that's why it's always optional and people can just disable it if they want to.

for example i don't use chat mode in the anime thread even though it would seemingly make sense. that's because a lot of times users will talk about their avatars or change their personal texts and i want to be able to see those. why should i be forced to not see them? why would anyone care what i see on posts in that thread?

basically, i don't think anyone should be arbitrarily limited in terms of what they can do in a thread. there's no reason posts should be limited to 1 line or whatever just because the thread creator thinks it would be a good idea. i think the anime thread works well because someone can post something huge in there (like nate's done on several occasions) and it will be read. this is contrary to everything kennyman has said -- sure, people casually chat there but when something "serious" is posted everyone jumps on that. so it works.

yeah i agree about defaultlite being separate. only thing i can think of atm is another checkbox under thread options in board view called "chat" or preferrably "chat mode" if that will fit. we'll see.
yeah it's definitely the job of forum admins and not the software to police people. at least unless you're the designer of python or something and you know how much i like python. so k.man's problem in that respect is really with me which is fine, i don't pretend i'm not using this forum as my personal chat network. i don't bother the metroid people and they don't bother me.

yeah you just said what i was trying to say in about 1/5 the words
red chamber dream
hmm what i might do is put thread options in a popup instead
red chamber dream
because the thread options that are there currently are not optional for users
yeah that makes sense
red chamber dream
if someone starts a static thread, then it's a static thread for everyone
red chamber dream
whereas chat mode is something anyone can turn off

so i definitely think it needs to be described as "default to chat mode" (rather than just "chat" or something) like it is in thread view ... it just also needs to be somewhere in board view.

Alright, here's one thing you need to change, like, now: I'm trying to read nate's post up there. But I can't because you keep posting and that auto-scrolls me to the bottom of the page.
i'll have to think about it some more ... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit i just had an idea
red chamber dream
yeah i hate that too. fix it nate hurry.

cram some more messy javascript up taiga's pussy mmm yeah baby
something that was made possible by the latest version is remembering which post is the most recent
you can see this if you hit the back button a few times
bleh it may not work if the post you're trying to read is taller than the viewport
i'll have to think about it more
there's got to be a way to do it

re: making chat mode even smaller for the marathon

i was also thinking this'd be a good idea. but it wouldn't be a new mode and it wouldn't be just for the marathon obviously. think what i'll do is move that little bar with the date, quote button, etc into a popup, then move the post text up so it's right beside the username.
ah yeah because it's two lines minimum right now
red chamber dream
would involve a major rewrite of post view but hey i'm used to that :P
red chamber dream
the only thing is i can see people wanting the quote and especially edit buttons on the post
yeah, people use that on irc and it would be nice to have a way to do it faster in tf
do that i mean
