yeah, a liion battery. one of two big upgrades with it imo. (two downgrades would be the "it's only a crime to fuck kids if you're not a multinational corporation" lack of an audio out port, as well as the painful form factor for larger handeds).
but yeah, imo, the frequent release schedule of handheld systems is starting to get a little tired.
Well, the rechargeable battery can be seen as either a plus or a minus. Plus is obvious; minus is that if your battery needs recharging you can't just pop in some standard ones while it cooks. Since I greatly prefer using the GBP for solo gaming I pretty much only use my GBAs for Four Swords and I'd be annoyed if I or another player had to drop out of a game because their SP battery was dead.
I admire the compact elegance of the SP, but opted not to get one. The original GBA was my first handheld, and that was largely because I didn't like the placement of the buttons and d-pad on the earlier GBs; every time I pressed a button the whole thing would move and I couldn't see. After trying a GBA at E3 2001 I realized there was finally a comfortable one out there. I'll probably get a DS eventually so I can have a comfortable one I can actually see. (Though my bf still intends to install Afterburners in my and my sister's GBAs.)
You know, I thought for a really long time that the SP was just a worthless attempt to cash in. Then I played one, and suddenly I could actually see what was happening in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. And my word, it was so small. And the clamshell design protected the screen. And a rechargeable battery. It even looks cool, for crying out loud! The SP was far better than the GBA in every way, except for the lack of a headphone jack. That was disappointing. Luckily, I bought an adaptor, and everyting was good! You never realize just how hard it is to see the GBA's screen until you play an SP.

Don't need to tell me twice: I only have the original, and I can hardly see anything unless I have full sunlight coming in from behind me pretty much. (Not sure why, but the light I bought for the GBA seems to eat up battery life VERY quick now, more than it normally does.)
Edit: Which is why there is currently no light on my GBA
I have to agree with ya and say that it was pointless, but thats not to say it wasn't a success. The SP is pretty cool and has good features, I wouldn't buy it for it but if I was going to go out and get a GBA for the first time I would go with the SP. Well... DS.

Same story here. I actually got sore joints from craning my head to get my original GBA into a decent lightsource.
Heh, you sound so certain and then add "but I could be wrong."
From Nintendo's site: "Nintendo DS features a separate media port for Game Boy Advance cartridges. Nintendo DS allows you to play all your favorite Game Boy Advance games in a single-player mode." (emphasis mine)
From what I've heard, the GBA plays earlier GB games because it has an extra bit of hardware in it for that purpose. The DS lacks this.
