Depending on how much of a pain it was for you to do that run, I'd say take a shot at it and see if you can somehow slice off that last minute. Either way, even if you can't get it done, you have an absolutely amazing time on your hands!
Rather reassuringly that wasn't that hard to do. I think because of my experience single segmenting super I don't find it too hard to keep it together for the duration of a SS run, and because this game is simpler in almost every way imaginable helps on top of that. So yeah it easily replicatable. I think what's really helping my time is none of the bosses are giving me any grief, and in fact I set most of them up nicely for quick kills. Ruins 3 is my favourite place because I can trap the gammas, I especially can't wait to show you the last Gamma of that area aiwebs_011

Fucking Bastard!!! Why are you not recording yet??? Hehehe... Just kidding, man! Hope you can solve that dvd recorder issue and i'm looking forward to see your run. Good luck!
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
So, logically, if you've now done Metroid 2 and Metroid 3, is Fusion next? Wink
haha nah stuff that. I think Biospark's got that one covered. For me I just stumble into games that I want to speed run. Usually it's games I've always loved and I go to play them again for fun, but then I feel the speed runner inside me trying to think of ways to be faster everywhere. Dunno could do metroid 1 though, but it's not exactly on my love list Think
I will have a run of this game soon. My DVD recorder isn't recording it in color when I select 60Hz on the Gameboy player. So my only option is to either play on super game boy (not really recommended due to the speed difference) or purchase a USB device and record onto it and save the files on PC or whatever. I'm still looking into it.

In the meantime I did a little test of the two routes to the alpha and Omega after ruins 4. I actually found when optimized both as well as I could, that the left route is faster by about 5 seconds !; And as we have to take a route back to the area twice, it will save a total of around 10 seconds. This is quite a bit confidence booster for getting 0:54 !

Wohoo! More than 1 year has passed since my last post in the speed running thread and now somebody is actually up to the challenge and willing ot cut carl`s old record by 4 seconds!? Nice! Gogogo! :)
lol, seconds ?. I think you mean minutes. But then again I don't know if the difference is as much as 4 minutes, maybe more like 2 - 3. My 55 was in-game-time, which could roughly equivalent to a 57 minute real-time perhaps. In my attempts I'll try and get 54 in-game-time which could be around a 56 real-time. So far the run is dead set now. Nearly all the metroid fights (apart from most of ruin 1 alphas) have what I like to call "trap kills" where I get them caught in tight gaps and they are stuck by my missile shooting. Which are nearly all faster than standard kills and eliminate randomness of their movements, especially the damn Gammas. I'm eager to get this damn run underway now, and just got to wait till Friday to get this USB device.

I`m sorry, minutes, of course. Embarassed
I can recommend the Terratec Grabby, if you can get your hands on it. It`s cheap, but it is doing its job. I recorded some let`s plays of the MP trilogy with it and it produced a OK quality.
I'm glad you recommended this device because it's the only one we found that records my damn game in color. We had some regional bullshit PAL disadvantage and it was making my DVD recorder, not to mention other USB devices record the game in black and white. This device thankfully doesn't do that so thanks for recommending it once again.

I'm also posting to say I just got a 54 in-game time in a test run. A pretty good run too. It's getting close to flawless now and there were only two or three very small errors at a few places, so I'm doubtful that 53 is within my reach. The reason why I even consider this number is because I did another TAS of flawless play and dropped the time by two minutes over the old one and got 51 in-game time. I perhaps made it a little too perfect, lol
What'd you say?
I so can't wait to see what you can do with this game. After your Super Metroid run,I have no doubts that this will be just as amazing. Keep it up man!

You`re welcome! Go for it, dude!
Thanks guys. I'll give it the best shot when I get a chance to record.

Well well, only went and just got 53 in another unrecorded speed run. It was the best run so far but I didn't think it would be that straight forward. I'd say in total I lost about 30 seconds in mistakes so who knows if I can get 52. I highly doubt it now, but I've been surprised along the way so far for the millionth time so who knows Razz
That's really amazing!
Keep it up, man and good luck!
my umbrella goes directly to Bankai
i forgot to post my first ever completion time:

5:01

just barely missed sub 5 hours. i didn't get everything but since there's no % counter, it doesn't matter that much. i'll look into beating it again faster later.
After beating the game yesterday the first time around (with 5:48 h) I started a second playthrough today, because I wanted to see the best ending at the end.

Well, I was really suprised, but I got a 1:28 h on my second playthrough! :D I didn't any sequence breaks or speed tricks (in fact, I have never seen a speedrun for this game before), but I did a lot of restarts and I used a map this time around to plan my route. I got like 6 ETs and about 190 Missiles - really cool game. I have enough for now, but I will definitely watch a real speedrun soon.
I've seen this game get some new fans on the other thread which is nice to see.

I'll be doing a recorded speed run some time early next year and my aim is 0:53/0:52 minutes. I've already got 0:53 but not too sure whether I can squeeze it down to 0:52 but it would be cool if it's possible. Stay tuned aiwebs_004
And hour and a half for your second run through the game is quite good in my opinion. Took me several runs to get that fast.

But yeah, I'm pleased as well at how many people are experiencing ROS for the first time recently and enjoying it.

Wow, so are you using another route or have any new speedtricks or sequence breaks been found? I just watched the 0:59 h speedrun at SDA and despite there being some few mistakes, the overall speed was pretty high - so shaving of another 7 minutes seems to be possible only with some new strategies?
We were talking about routes before, and I know he's found super quick methods to take down the Gammas and Zetas which are the two most problematic of the evolutions, sometimes just because of the room you battle them in. From what I understand he's also quite good at the "Spider Throw" technique which can save a few seconds (or a lot more depending on where it's used) each time, which will add up.

I'm no expert, but I think it mostly comes down to the fights being perfected since they can add a lot of extra time if you screw up or the Metroid decides to not cooperate. I'm highly looking forward to the run when he finishes it.
Also remember -- the reported in-game time is not accurate and is not used for the official time. The actual counted time is the physical time it takes from the instant you see samus on screen to the instant you're back inside the ship at the end. The reported in-game time will actually be a shorter reported time than how long it really took.
Yeah, now that you mention it, isn't the timer off a little even if you run through the game in a single segment?
Yea I estimate it would be off by about 2 - 3 minutes, so around a 55 minute real-time run perhaps. I recently got a clock which I can use to time my game accurately in real-time so I'll get back to you with the times I'm getting.

The route is pretty much the same apart from taking the "TAS" route in ruins 2 which is: scaling the ruins wall right away and getting the spring ball early as possible. It helps this place a lot and speeds it up by probably as much as a minute. But yeah most things were cleared up by Prime Hunter. Boss fights especially are mostly ironed out while also having spider throwing used throughout the run in many places.
What makes the in-game timer be off from actual time, and why doesn't the disparity occur the same for each player?
I think door transitions, item pickups, and maybe one or two other things don't add to the timer or something like that. Then of course there's the fact that each time you save it cuts off the seconds from what I've been told, so you can lose anywhere from 59 to 01 seconds each save from your final displayed time. (Guessing that would only apply whenever you reload, but I'm not 100% sure.)

This is what I remember being told when I asked about the timer a few months back, so I could be wrong.
