I took 3 Super Missiles, 2 Energy Tanks, and the Screw Attack and I was fine. If you want you can get an Energy Tanks instead of the Screw Attack, but I took the S.A. for Mother Brain. Anywho, that's what I'd recommend for someone who has trouble on MB. If you can beat her without it, I'd suggest another Energy Tank or maybe even the Long Beam or Hi-Jump.
^More hot rooms than that, including the ones in Ridley and Norfair, including coridors, not just big rooms. 8) You can bypass them All,I'm not kidding. You can go through without Varia and still make it through.
I believe the consensus is that Hi-Jump is a waste of time, at least in any %.
Actually, unless things have changed recently, I thought any%er's got the high jump, 'cause it saved enough time considering that you can morph jump, and that it makes space jumping faster. :?

Radix and GameCube04 recently decided the best any-percent route included the high-jump. So yes, the any-percent routes do include the high jump right now.
You might as well get Varia since they give it to you later when you get the fully powered suit, regardless of whether you got it or not (and yes it counts for 1%)

Actually, if you're going for speed, that's exactly the reason NOT to get it.
The way the topic is labelled I read it as what would be the best items to pick up. For a speed run I'd agree to skip it, but if he's just goin' for 15% and not time then he might as well grab it since they give it to him later.

If you aren't gonna get it, doesn't that out-rule getting the Screw Attack?

I believe 4 supers, speed boost, hi-jump is best (8 supers for MB, plus I almost always miss MR with one shot, killing the speed kill). You may swap high jump for Screw Attack if MB's Cheerios of DOOM are too much....
Call me crazy, but I always grab the long beam on a 15% run. i just find it to be easier to snipe enemies at range rather than kill myself getting to close (especially the damn fly pods in Brinstar). :x Also, 2 super tanks and 3 energy tanks.
Oh, oops, I misread it. I saw the word "run" and assumed he was speed running it. Well, For the above poster (next one above me, not everyone above me) swap an Energy Tank for Screw Attack. Trust me.

Hmmm... I played through a normal difficulty 15% run w/o screw attack, and never found a place where i needed it. The rinkas weren't a problem for me, (freeze 2, no more will come until thse 2 are destroyed) and I stayed on the right-side platform so the guns couldn't hit me. I never died facing MB, i found that a short hop over the "mind beam" dodges it and kept me out of strike range of the turrets.
If i ever get around to a hard mode 15%, i probably will grab the SA, though. It would make later parts of the game easier.
Well, the pirates in the escape run are just plain annoying, huh? For a while I thought I'd need it, but then with the ice beam, they aren't really as bad as I thought.
