lately the board has been rather quiet so i thought this kind of discussion would be interesting to have.

the only Metroid game i've played this year was mp1 back in february when miles and parax had a race. i beat the game following them for fun and to see how far behind of them i was.

outside that, i haven't even booted any of the games on any system. this is probably the year i've paid the least attention to the series ever since i started playing it (the other lowest point was 2003 since i just beat Fusion that year and didn't do much else but getting to the end and then getting 100% back then took way longer than what it takes me on average now)

so far, the next time i play one of the games is either when the GBA games are available to 3DS ambassadors or when Metroid 2 comes out for 3DS VC. i have no motivation to play any of the other games for now.

Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I've played Super a little, but primarily for hacks.  I also recently played Zero Mission up to the Zero Suit part (I usually stop there).  I started playing Prime 2 not too long ago, but hadn't got very far before I was distracted by some other game.

For the most part I've let the series sit there over the last few years, playing them here and there or else all at once when preparing for Other M, for instance. Lately, I think the only one I've really played is ROS when I was trying my first real speed runs of the game, including my first ever SS run of a Metroid title. Obviously Super counts if you include hacks, but I don't think I've played the original version in quite some time, but my SS attempts with ROS make me wonder how well I'd do them in Super so I may end up trying that sooner or later.

Actually, looking at my database where I keep records of all of my runs, I played Super and Zero Mission a little at the start of the year when I was in a 100% mode kick, but otherwise nothing else between them and my recent ROS runs. It's sad to think that not even five years ago I was probably playing at least one every month or so.

I think part of the reason I haven't played them as much is because I've reached the limit of my skill level on most of the games, so there's not as much point to speed running them for me at this time. I'll play them casually from time to time since it really does change the experience and let me absorb everything that makes each game great outside of this community's reasons. But other than trying 100% or SS runs, both of which I have little experience with in a speed running context, I don't have any desire to do run most of them right now.

I've definitely shelved metroid indefinitely.  It's been months and months since I played any metroid games.  I guess I still stop by this forum because it's familiar?  I did stop playing metroid several times over the years, with one break lasting nearly 5 years.  Once it starts to get old, it takes a while for my brain to forget enough details so that it feels fresh again.
I'm glad you started this thread though, because it's interesting to see that others are slumped during this period as well.  It makes me wonder if Other M is the cause.

Other M didn't really affect my gaming pattern at all.  It's just that I always have too many games to play through.  If I started trying to add replays into the mix, I'd never finish anything.
This past year, I think I played Prime once, Fusion and ZM once or twice and I have a save just after Draygon on SM right now.
I like turtles.
Fusion and Zero Mission.  Likely a couple others I'm forgetting.
Club 27 Goals
I think I played a few mins of other M at the start of the year. Otherwise, none.
Well, uh, I've played the Prime series a bit...
I like turtles.
Yeah, but barely.  This thread is for people who actually play the games for a decent amount of time.

Nah, my decline more or less started because of college and having to focus a lot of my time on that instead of the games. Plus what I said in my last paragraph.

I figure most of us being older doesn't hurt either, seeing as there are plenty of things to occupy us nowadays (work, family, etc.) that may not have been there when we were younger.
Being too busy was the biggest factor of my 5 year break.  These days though, gaming has replaced my TV time almost completely.  Americans typically spend 4-6 hours every single day watching TV, I would much rather play games though.  I probably spend 4-6 hours watching TV per WEEK, not per day.
My social circle has shrank tremendously over the past year. I got into a long term relationship, and that always seems to shrink your social life since all of your attention goes to that one person.
This hiatus from metroid seems different than past ones because I haven't really stopped gaming at all, in fact I'm playing much more than I should.

ANKOKU
I played Fusion once this year, and I think I got up through the Dark Suit in Echoes waaay early in the year.

At one point I probably got on a "play the metroid games you haven't beaten yet" kick, which stopped rather quickly midway through Metroid 2.

Haven't touched Prime since I beat it in the Trilogy last year. Haven't touched Corruption since I beat it on it's original disk (which I sold back once I heard of the Trilogy).
I haven't played ZM in a long while because I'm in a low% speedrun stuck at the damn black pirates (and that save has been sitting for YEARS).
TRIED to play Super, but just couldn't get into the angled aiming controls (and I know of the control hack).
Haven't touched Other M since I got roughly 1/4 through it on a second playthrough. (even though I've been toying with the idea of trying to do the first recorded speedrun)

So yeah... not a lot of Metroid on my plate.
I AM however planning a full series playthrough once AM2R is completed.

Ok, that's true for me too now that you mention it. There are so many games I want to play but never got around to or ones that are brand new to the point where I don't have time for all of them, and Metroid kinda got lost along the way because of that along with everything else I've mentioned. Again, that's partly due to the fact that I'd hit a wall in my attempts to speed run most of them. I still love the series, but there's only so much I can play if it doesn't feel like my efforts are getting me anywhere.

I think that's why I latched onto ROS so much over the last few months. It felt fresh and new to me because of how little experience I had with it beforehand, especially for speed running. It's also why now that I've played the AM2R demo a few times I can't wait for that to be finished either.

That said, I don't have a lot of interest in playing any of the other Metroid games right now (well, other than the occasional SM hack), so I think ROS is an exception.

Probably played super less this year than the last 4 or so years. Occasionally playing it to test out new tricks that are getting discovered here and there. Other than that it's metroid 2 which is supplying the metroid fix right now. Don't think I've played Fusion or zero mission this year. Certainly haven't played the Primes this year although I will play them all again in the future for sure. Just not this year. No metroid 1, prime hunters or Other M either. I don't think that's likely to change for these three for a very long time.

I've only played Fusion and bit of ZM as far as I can remember this year, neither one very recently. And it is pretty much Other M's fault. Every time I hit a little sequence where Samus is saying something or fight Ridley I get reminded of the utter horseshit that Other M threw in at those points and don't want to play Metroid anymore.

It basically ruined the character for me.
Other M definitely put a damper on things for me, too.  My whole image of the series in general suffered.  Until then, metroid had a totally unblemished track history, and that made it easy for me to think of it as being the best.  Now, it's just like several other franchises that are awesome most of the time, or only if you don't count 'insert shitty title here'.

i agree. well, except for metroid, echoes, and corruption.

to be serious though, there aren't many series out there without any crappy "mothership" games. resident evil is one that comes to mind.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
There are zero good games in the Resident Evil series, how is that one that comes to mind?

;(

to be fair i haven't played all of them but the two i haven't are generally regarded as very good so i'm probably ok
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I dare anyone to play the original Resident Evil, having experienced actually good games, and say that that is a well designed, fun game. (It's not)

oh i guess i haven't played the original original ... the remake is great though
I've pretty much forgotten about Other M's existence and just focused on the rest of the series. I've done a couple of single-segment runs of Zero Mission, messed around with easy sequence breaks in Echoes, and played most of Super, as well as brief bits of Prime in attempts at IBBF. (No luck yet.)
I played through Metroid, Super, Prime, Fusion, and ZM this year. Obviously I spent the most time on Super and Prime, but I did manage to beat each of the other ones at least once. For the most part, though, this year has been one of those where I just play and beat a bunch of old or semi-old games that I missed out playing in the past.
The only Metroid games I've played this year are a couple Super Metroid hacks and the AM2R demo(although I've done many replays of this over the past week). Other than that, I haven't really played much Metroid this year.
