Queen is fucking awesome.  I just wish that they had been able to come out of the closet a little more.  It sucks that gay artists have to totally lie about their sexual orientation in order to get their break.  Only AFTER becoming household names can they even consider the option of coming out and even then they are sure to see massive drops in record sales.  Just look at Ricky Martin.  There's no way he would have gotten to be so famous if he had been truthful about his queerness.  Slowly but surely, different artists can come out and gradually weaken the homophobia.  One time I went into a record store and asked the sales associate where I could find Rupaul's new single, to which she replied "You mean that nasty gay guy?"  The gay bashing is so acceptable that even a sales rep, whose job it is to make sales - not make statements on their idea of morality, feels justified in totally being prejudiced.  There are alot of closeted musical artists out there right now, but they know that coming out would devastate their careers.  Kirk Hammett is the first one that comes to mind.  It sucks that if he came out that Metallica's album sales would easily be cut in half, even if they made their best album to date.  America is totally an anti-gay theocratic redneck bunch of fucktards sometimes.  OK I'll stop now.

wasn't mercury the only gay one in the band?

I'm not sure, but I would be surprised. It's hard enough to imagine the other members being willing to be in a group with a flamer, let alone doing drag with him.

really? i dunno about that ... they were way ahead of their time as a group so i can't imagine them caring about sexual orientation.

Come on. Nobody knows it for a total fact except himself and those who he has told, but it's kind of a well-known secret.  Like Ricky Martin, he has never DENIED being gay, but at the same time won't admit it freely (before he actually came out, of course).  Then there are people like Anderson Cooper who do interviews and photo-shoots for gay magazines and frequently appears in public with his partner, but when asked if he is gay he just says that it's nobody's business. Any straight man would vehemently deny that allegation.  By doing it this way, the artists can allow the really ignorant fans to continue to believe that their idol is heterosexual and that it's OK to be their fans without burning in eternal hellfire.

Just 'cause someone says "my orientation is none of your business" doesn't automatically mean "yep, they're in the closet." And the way you describe homophobia, it's like the worst thing ever, which is hardly the case. I mean, sure, there are people who hate homos with a passion, but most people just don't accept them because they're weirdos and practiced something that has been considered an abomination for more than a millennium.
We clearly have totally incompatible viewpoints on the issue.  I concede and humbly agree to disagree with you.  If I start arguing about it then I'm gonna get way too upset.  These issues are important to me because I have personally seen just how much pain and horrible shit there is out there because of homophobic discrimination, including the suicide of a dear friend.  People's opinions seem to be shaped relative to how they are affected by the issue, and unless you've walked in my shoes/I've walked n yours, etc etc.

Britain was a bit more open towards gay people than the US at the time, well, I guess that's still the case. But really, this line of conversation isn't going to go anywhere good and the important thing is that Queen owned and Freddie Mercury was a totally awesome singer who also happened to be gay.

Fun Freddie Fact: Brian May was pretty sure that Freddie, pretty badly fucked up by AIDS at the time, would not be able to pull off the fairly demanding vocals for The Show Must Go On. But Freddie was all, "I'll fucking do it!" because he was a bad ass and then he actually did in one take because he was just too awesome.
I sat in a theatre with Brian May in the seat RIGHT BEHIND ME.  I had no idea it was him until someone ran up to him frantically pleading for an autograph.  I was watching a rehearsal of 'We Will Rock You', a Queen musical in Las Vegas.  My friend was one the stars in the show, so I got to watch the rehearsal, and May was involved in the production.  Sadly, the show kinda sucked.  :(

... and that is all that matters really.

Who cares about his sexual orientation really? He was an incredibly talented artist. And that's all there is to it.

We love gays, especially on TV.

I'd like to take this oppurtunity to say two things. Firstly, Them Crooked Vultures' album is pretty good, certainly worth a look if you like the idea of dirty rock riffing to a surprisingly lo-fi extreme.

Secondly, I am sorry to announce the death of my Sony Walkman NWZ-S639F, who, even after a format snd reinstallation of fimware, won't work properly.
