Has there been any documentation about changes in just the U.S. version of Prime since its release?  I bought it brand new yesterday, and it seems things are different...the dash jump with scan visor doesn't work, for example.  Another obvious difference is the large branch in the middle of Ruined Shrine has been pruned back to almost nothing!  Yet things like the spiderball track clipping bug remain...  I'm confused.  Any help?

Is what you have the Player's Choice version, or whatever? If not, looks like you've proven that there are undocumented changes to new copies of the game.

It was suspected that something like this would happen, but there was no real evidence, hence there's nothing about it on the site. Also makes me wonder now if this is the only NTSC version that is different from the original, if not that would just make it harder to document any differences.

So Prime ended up like Zelda 64 and Smash Bros Melee as I thought.  Ocarina of Time and Melee both have different versions with things like this happening.  Metroid Prime has joined the club I guess.  Nintendo is being stupid.  Instead of not changing it and letting interest remain in the game, they try to stop people from examining things or maybe OMGWTFBBQ SEQUENCE BREAKING OH NO!  Hmmph.  :x

Yeah, I bought the PLAYER'S CHOICE version... I had no idea there WAS such a thing!  I spent an HOUR attempting the early space jump trick before I realized I wasn't dash jumping at all!  GRRRRRRRRR

Odd they would make some of the PAL changes and not bother with others like the track jump... There's already too damn many versions of this game though. This new one just makes it even more complicated.  Crying or Very sad

Now what I'm wondering is, is there a way to tell which version is which on the box?  I didn't see any Player's Choice on the boxes at the store, but there may be an indication of which one is which on the box.  Some of them might be old copies that they didn't sell but have marked down.  Like with Smash Bros Melee and Zelda 64.  I'm going to examine my box (it's from December 2002) and see.

yes (about the yellow bar on top that says players' choice). unfortunately, i will have to try again tomorrow (wal*mart was the only place still open and they had it for $32?! isn't it supposed to be $19.99 us?)

Toys R Us had it for $29.99 ($30 for further references).  The copies I saw had no banner, but the $20 Players Choice games have a sticker/banner.  I'm still trying to get this straight.

I bought my copy (with big yellow PLAYER'S CHOICE banner across the top of the front cover) for $30 at a Best Buy in Sacramento, California.  Just to clarify.

Well, the ones I saw at Toys R Us had no banner/sticker.  I guess there's two versions sold in the US right now.  Like with Ocarina of Time.

Well I'd immagine that any of the old version of the game that they still have in stock would be reduced to player's choice price, with or without the big banner. It would be pretty stupid if they didn't do that, as a matter of fact. The copies you saw were probably just backlog.

though this means it will be a little while before i get my hands on a players' choice copy...  :(

OK, my apologies if this has already been discovered, but...I might've found another change in the PLAYER'S CHOICE version.

I'm in Geothermal Core, WITH the Spider Ball but WITHOUT Grapple Beam and Power Bomb.  I got up onto the platforms and raised them, only to find the door to the Plasma Beam is LOCKED.  Not covered with the Power Bomb stuff (Bendezium?), but just LOCKED.  I haven't attempted to reach the door yet (either by the intended Spider Ball maze, or some other method), but I'll post when I do.  From what I remember in the videos, you could get the Plasma Beam without Grapple Beam AND without Spider Ball.  Has anybody EVER seen that door locked?

Also:  I tried the Spider Ball track clipping bug here, and it didn't work.  I posted earlier that the bug still existed, but I based that solely on the entrance to the Furnace (where I was able to get up the track).

And finally--I might be hallucinating, but the elevator cutscene seems different in this version somehow.  The closeup on Samus seems to last longer--maybe this was to correct the elevator freeze problem?

Hopefully I'll be in a position to submit video very soon...

I've got the PAL version, and I'm pretty sure that door is NEVER locked in PAL. All I have to say about this is Retro appear to be a bunch of spoilsports.

Yeah, somebody's out to ruin the fun for us latecomers...

Update on the "Locked Door in Geothermal Core"--since the PAL version added a pile of Bendezium (sic?) in front of the door, I decided to get the Power Bomb in Phendrana's Edge next ...but still, no change to the locked door.  So they've rigged it to STAY locked until you get the Grapple Beam, I'm guessing. 

Now I'm REALLY getting annoyed.  I'm also really getting an OLDER COPY as soon as I find one.  Wink

this is very, very, very bad. people who know about routes know what i mean.

perhaps i will need to buy that piece of shit after all.

the longer elevator cut scene was something that was added in pal, i believe - i just never got around to adding it to the version differences. it's not that the cut scene is any longer, it's that there are actually two cut scenes of samus now, one for when she goes up an elevator and one for when she goes down.

yeah, i really have to get this. it would be interesting to see if the exact same frigate escape handicap applies...

Next thing you know you'll have a computer called Adam guiding your every move. Apparantly Retro doesn't seem to understand that SBing = replay value. It's not as if anyone who can get early plasma couldn't do the natural route anyway.

there is probably a reason for the things. they seem too specific otherwise.
