Hey everyone, I've been talking about this for a while so I thought I should startup a little topic explaining exactly HOW to cheat on your Wii.

All of this information is available freely on the internet. Before you can begin you need to know that I provide no warranty, all information is provided as is. Under no circumstance am I responsible for what you do with your Wii nor is anyone else involved in Homebrew. None of this information is illegal as far as I know. It is extremely unlikely that your Wii will become unusable (I've never even heard of it happening) but even if that does happen Nintendo currently is fixing Wiis that have homebrew installed without voiding the warranty. They just delete the homebrew channel and act like normal.

Nearly all information here is from http://wiibrew.org/ and http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/

Feel free to ask questions. I should be able to help with most or at least direct you to someone else who can.

What do you mean by cheat?
Like gameshark or pro action replay style cheats but on Wii games. Moon jump in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Transformation at any time in Mario Galaxy, Super Hookshots in Twilight princess, etc.

What do I need to get started?
  • Wii (3.3 or 3.4 version system menu)
  • SD card (cannot be larger than 2gb aka SDHC) and a way to directly write files onto that SD card
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (MUST BE THE WII VERSION!)

How do I get started?
A nice little guide has been written up here:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Setting_up_your_Wii_for_Homebrew

That guide will help you install the Homebrew channel which is the launch center for all homebrew applications. This channel will stay on your Wii unless you delete it (or Nintendo deletes it with an update).

The Homebrew Channel uses the SD card for applications. You will need the card inserted in your Wii every time you want to play a game with cheats.

Gecko OS
Gecko OS is the Wii / GC app that lets you launch games region free and enable cheats. The cheating application used to be called Ocarina but since has been merged into Gecko OS.

To download Gecko OS go to http://www.usbgecko.com/manual.htm and look for Gecko OS 1.07b (For HBC V9 Beta)
To install Gecko OS, simply unzip the files to S:\apps\geckoos_cf\ where S: is your SD card.

If you place the SD card in your Wii and went to the Homebrew channel you should see GeckoOS in the list and now be able to play games Region free.

You can read more about Gecko OS here: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Gecko_OS and here http://wiird.l0nk.org/wp/

Using cheats
Using cheats requires that you have the Homebrew channel installed and Gecko OS on your SD card.

Here is the link to the PC cheat code manager which allows you to create, edit, and enable/disable cheats.  http://wiird.l0nk.org/dl/codemgr1.1.zip

Install it wherever you would like on your PC and start looking for cheats for the game you want to play.
I will use Metroid Prime 3 (NTSC-US) as an example.

First I go to the Code Database - http://www.usbgecko.com/codes/
I find the game I'm looking for (using NTSC-US here) http://www.usbgecko.com/codes/index.php?r=u&c=RM3E01
I'm going to be lazy so I'll just click download.
Next I'll open up the code manager and open that txt file. It should look something like the picture below.

Select the codes you would like to use and then press the "Export to GCT" button (this will transfer the codes to your SD card).

Select the drive that your SD card is in and click "Store" to save it

Alright now you are done. Go put the SD card in your Wii, start the wii up, select homebrew channel, click on GeckoOS, and click "Launch Game".

While it is launching it should say "SD codes found, applying". If it doesn't please re-read this section and see if you missed anything.

FAQ

What is Ocarina?
Basically the old cheat engine. It had issues with some games and I don't think it even launches with Metroid Prime 3. It has been superseded by GeckoOS so there is no reason to use it anymore.

Where can I find cheats?
The USB Gecko code database for one - http://www.usbgecko.com/codes/
Also here are some forums that generally have more codes than the database and a nice game compatibility list (not all games work with GeckoOS) - http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/

The game crashes or doesn't start when using cheats! What is wrong?
You could be using conflicting cheats, using cheats for the wrong version (twilight princess has 2 versions in the US), or the game could just not be compatible with GeckoOS. Try running with less cheats. If it always crashes try checking http://wiird.l0nk.org/forum/index.php?board=5.0 - That forum is for GeckoOS game compatibility.

How do I play region free?
From GeckoOS click config, then select the video type you'd like to force it to.

After that click back and launch the game.

Can I use GeckoOS to cheat gamecube games?
Short answer: No
