Updated Avatar Gallery

I was bored this evening and decided to look through the Statistics page (hadn't in a while), and I noticed that much of the avatar gallery is never utilised. Would anyone suppourt the idea of a new, updated avatar gallery, containing more avatars from more and different Metroid games? We could all find/make avatars to add, deleting unused ones.
Now, I do realise that the avatar gallery has never been all that popular, but maybe an overhaul would give it some more use. I dunno, just something to do.

*shrug* I figure the people who want to find their own (which is most of us) will do that, regardless of whether or not the forum already has an avatar gallery. Some people might not really care about their avatars like you or I do and might just want something quick that has to do with Metroid. I'd just like to give them more options.

I'd be more than willing to create a batch of Metroid-related avatars. Which file format (.jpg, .gif, .png, etc) would be most preferable? Is there a smaller size limit that I should try to keep forum-hosted avatars beneath? Any particular enemies-scenes-bosses I should be sure to include?

png is always preferred. iirc the size limit here is 30 kb.

Any boss from MP and MP2E would probably get some use, as people seem to really like those games (and 3D avatars also seem to be preferred). Also, perhaps avatars of the different 2D Suits (those seem to be liked a lot, too) and bosses of like, Super Metroid or something. Skree seem to be popular as well. Anything interesting, really.

Doesn't look like it needs to be smaller becuase it's forum-hosted, because they probably won't be used THAT much, anyway.

Haha, I don't know if this is a silly question or not, but could you put transparent backgrounds on these? Seems they'd function better as generic avatars.

I tried that (saved a couple as a simple transparent .gif) - without a pixel-by-pixel retouching, they would all have irregular 1-to-2 pixel white borders around the image, as the resizing leaves a "non-perfect" border near the stock image. Basically, they'd look like crap unless I spent quite a bit of time working on each. Which I'm willing to do... but not unless there's a great clamoring for transparent bkg avatars.

Took one of the previous avvy's, did the pixel retouching, made it a transparent .gif. It took about 15 minutes, but I think the result is worth it:

If it's desired, I can make some more of the previous set with a transparent background.

Personally, I love the Echoes suit renders, any of them. They would make sweet icons. I like mine as well, but that's probably a given.

What's the deal with this, anyway? Are we being encouraged to use the site's avatars, or just giving the newbs more choices?

You're being given more site avatars to choose from, but that doesn't mean you have to use them.

I tried one, though it didn't turn out as nice as I like…

It's mostly for new users joining the forum, as most existing users already have their avatars established.

It's a little more blurred around the tentacles than I would like, but the top looks pretty good. At times during this process, I remembered when I was making my Metroid icons for Mac OS X, and how that program might be good for this (size limit on it is 128^2, so it's very close). Some of my darklings had a purple glow surrounding them that looked pretty nice, so I might investigate that…

I added an outer glow to the image after taking out the background. When I first created it, it didn't look quite right, and this looks better IMHO.
