The last game in 2D Metroid series left unTASed is now... well, TASed. Twice. :)

"any%" Metroid II - Return of Samus in 46:17.4 by Cardboard

"100%" Metroid II - Return of Samus in 55:18.43 by Alter

Both runs are of very good quality, especially the any%. Enjoy.

(As usual, you need modified Visualboy Advance to play the .vbm movies.)
Thread title:
Umm... there's been a few TASes up thar for a while. I'm going to follow your links now and see if they're the ones I've already seen...
One any% and two 100% runs were submitted before by the same respective authors but only these versions were published.
In that case... awesome. Trying to get the "fastfall on corners" glitch to work in realtime is crazy fun.

Edit: Awesome, I hadn't seen the any%.
Will download later.... and probably use to inspire a few new real-time speed runs.

'Bout time there were decent TAS's for MII. :D
Awesome, carlmmii! I'd be willing to hear you comments on the routes taken... I have a feeling there must be even faster routes for both type of runs.

Kraid first route!

Er, I mean uh...Beta first route?

Um...that's probably a long backtrack. Morph ball first route?

...I guess that's a given. I think Metroid first is the best to start on.

Well, not really. The any-% run is pretty much perfected in cardboard's run. Not much you can really improve on. The route is the same as the route I had planned after my sub-hour run, using nearly the exact same bump jumping to get the spring ball first in the second ruins (glad to see it actually saves time :)... this just makes me itch even more to re-do that run even faster). Metroid fights are also taken to the extreme, but I can't really use any of the techniques used except for what I already do with leading the metroids toward where I'm going to end up going. His fight with the right-most omega metroid also solidified my theory that that omega is truly the bitch of them all. >.<

alter's 100% run isn't quite up to the same quality as cardboard's any-%, partly because it has no use of the spider throw, and also because there are some tricks that can normally be done that he doesn't use (like not bump-jumping on all of the spikes when coming out of the far-right gamma pit of ruins 3). That, and taking the retard exit out of the beam center of ruins 4 (take a look at radix' map -- the lower exit actually spits you out 1 full map-block above where you'd expect... the entrances to that place are closer together than the shaft actually is, so it's quicker to exit out the bottom and make your way up). I stopped watching after that. It pissed me off a bit too much.

I'm wondering just how far 100% can be taken though if this was done in 55 minutes without spider throwing. Granted, the TAS version has a much faster traveling time from the constant fast-falling and quick morphing, but there are some things that should still be possible to improve on. I'll just have to try a multi-segment run to see.

I hope he at least shot out those roof blocks that you bombed. :^P
Nope. -_-

I guess this kind of thing is the reason nate hated TASes in passionate firey passion.
