It's come to my attention that a massive number of topics are getting derailed. It seems that this board can't go past page 2 without veering off course. Now, I don't really mind a conversation taking a turn somewhere else, and I really don't want to prevent that from happening over the natural course of things, but it's happening in damn near EVERY topic, and sometimes it even appears intentional.

PLEASE work with me on this people. The very last thing I want to do is hand out warnings or delete posts for being off topic. I'm not saying I want you to stay 100% on topic, because I know you can't talk about one single thing forever, and often someone will say something to ignite a slightly different subject that gives a bit of new life into a topic. But this is getting pretty freaking rediculous. I'm usually not reading the entirity of threads, and often by the time I get to one whatever people are saying has absolutely nothing to do with the subject line, and when I go back, the topic has been changed 3 or 4 times. If someone says something that makes you want to talk about something unrelated to the current topic, then maybe it's worth making a new thread over. I'm definately not going to complain about new threads if they're inteligent and worthwhile. If it's not something you want to make a new topic about, then try to make an effort to steer the conversation back after you've made your side comment (ie, "Getting back to the topic at hand...").

In the Boardwalk it's not such a big deal (although I would still appreciate some care there), but in other places, the Metroid threads especially, it's something to watch out for more.

This is the last thing in the world I want to enforce, so I'm asking you all kindly to help me out. I do NOT want to turn our mods into the off-topic police, I do NOT want to delete anything or ban anyone for being off topic. But I also do NOT want to see every new thread created evaporate into nonsense within a page. So let's all try to work on this, please.

Duly noted.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Hmm, I see what you mean, it is kind of fun to get a bit off topic  naturally, as we so often do, but it does get ridiculous when people actually try to derail topics, and it would be helpful if the topics didn't derail multiple times in a matter of minutes.
Time bomb set get out fast!
Wouldn't it be ironic if we derailed THIS topic?

I'm kidding, Tooz.  Put the spazer down.  Come on, put it --

Ow.
soaking through
In our defence, the amount of truly crap topics has gone up recently, mostly due to Radu, who's something like eighth on the most created topics graphy thing.
Actually, he's ninth right now, but never mind that.

I did make an attempt to steer back the "I wish" topic, but Yoshi was the one who succeded.

I know I've derailed some topics, so I'm sorry for that, and I'll do my best to stay more on-topic in the future.
Too many fangirls to count
I tried to once. I'm sorry. That was a joke. I contribute but am not usually the one to do it. I am the on who changed the "you wish" topic. That wasn't too much change though. I'm sorry for any derailing done too soon. It just sorta fun.

Heheheh... Laughing
Enforcing this rule would alienate nearly every active member...
I can't think of a single active poster not guilty of this.
Is it really that harmful? I'd much rather a short topic list with large topics than a ton of topics with 5 posts each.
PAGE BREAKER
Ready and willing.

Well, Tooz said that a little natural derailment is okay, but it's the deliberate or big derailments that he's trying to keep out off these forums.

IIRC, I haven't really derailed any topics yet.
What luck, there's french fry stuck in my beard.
I've derailed more than a couple, I'd say, but never on purpose.
I haven't... sarcasm != derailment

On the other hand, you rear-end birds.

Which is probably worse in the long run. Not to mention more painful (well, for the birds at least).

Way more than a couple, you were the master of topic derailing.

Just don't let any sizeable derailment take place, and you'll be fine.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Or atleast, don't massively derail a topic on purpose.
For most derailments (i.e. those which arise out of humorous commentary or wild tangents), this wouldn't apply, but how about splitting off sections of a derailed topic if it appears warranted? Especially when the "new" topic is pertinent to the board, or perhaps warrants its own topic in another board, or is undergoing heated discussion.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
That actually makes a lot of sense, it makes things much easier to follow. I think I saw this happen once, back in November, but can't remember what it was for or what it came from.

Like, i.e., my MS Paint thread which split from the I Wish thread.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Yeah, I guess it was, wow, how great is my memory.
Yeah, but how often do people actually have the presence of mind to voluntarily start a new thread? Not to mention that any previous discussion on the topic remains in the old thread, lost forever to oblivion.
