On what foremat did you first play Metroid?
NES (23)
Computer via emulation (16)
Metroid Prime bonus (26)
Haven't played it at all (0)
Zero Mission bonus (14)
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Personally I didn't play it until I unlocked it in Metroid Prime, and even then I didn't play for long. I don't like it all that much.  :?
Thread title:
I own it for NES... I've never finished it, however.

Prime. It's non-linear to the point of overwhelming... I had to wimp out and use a walkthrough.
I first played it through emulation, but that was because I hadn't bought Fusion yet to unlock it in Prime. I play it through Prime now, though.

Yoshi, it feels less linear than it is because you have no map. It annoyed me at first, too, but now my only complaint about it is summed up quite nicely here.
There's also the fact that Geemers become quite difficult to kill when you're unable to crouch.
yeah i hate that, there's sooo many glitctes in the game... when u go under a platform by lava, you cant be seen and everything is screwed up :(
Basically what Yoshi said, except I found it via emulation.  And I got lost to the point that even a guide wouldn't help. :(
Yeah I know what you mean...  I used a map and it didn't help me :(
There should be one more option in the poll too ;)
When I was a kid, my friends and I didn't actually think there was a Metroid 1.  Other theories were thrown around, too.  Like that it was never released in North America.  Or it just wasn't released in Canada, where I was living at the time.

Needless to say we were all very confused by all the "Mother Brain" stuff in Super Metroid...

In any case, I first played it with an emulator, years later.  And, unlike so many others (games, not people) I actually beat it.  It coincided with the time I stopped just playing games, and started being a gamer (if you follow).
I first played it when it came out.  If I remember correctly, the only way you could get a map in those pre-Internet days was to buy the Nintendo Player's Guide (or subscribe to Nintendo Power magazine maybe), so I'd get completely lost for hours on end, immersed in this enormous (at least it seemed that way at the time) maze of a world.

That's what really hooked me about the game--none of my friends wanted to watch me play it (they were more into the 2-player games, like Renegade or Super Mario Bros), so I was basically forced to zone out on it on my own.

Added a new option to accomodate the new way to play.

Nintendo was very public about that fact. Anyone who doesn't know about it deserves to be spoiled.  :P
wait, there's a zero mission bonus?

Shh, it's a secret!
Okay, okay!

Does anyone know why the leaked ROM doesn't have the bonus Original Metroid game? Whenever I try to play it, it locks up and I have to reset the emu. :?
Eh? Worked just fine for me.  'Course, I felt a little silly playing a game emulated in a game I was playing on an emulator.
Well I tried Metroid a long time ago on an emulator. A few years later I decided to get it. I got the rereleased version (same game but different artwork) on ebay.
I('d) like to watch (some MP3 runs)
NES cart first.

Played it on emu a handful of times, and on Zero Mission once.

I Prefer NES cart, but when I get ZM who knows.
"This Forum needs some Love [...]"

I have to point out, i had my Avatar before the sub-forum was kind of "popular" (because of ZM ;)

Metroid was my second Game ever to own (when i could finally afford a NES) so i played it lika a million times.

But the linked Maru Cartoon shows the Weakness of Metroid1, i thinks it too hard when you begin (or annoying, cause you have to collect energy after continuing) and afterwards (screw attack) it gets too easy
i actually tried playing through the game yesterday.  (prime version)

Got much farther than i thought i could have... 3 tanks, 35 missiles, kraids layer is fucking owning my ass.

must...not...use...guide....
The first Metroid I ever played was Super.  One of my friends, who is a Metroid nut, told me I should play the original for the sake of completion, so I tried it out on an emu.  After playing Super, the original seemed pretty hard.  Despite the fact that I collect a number of powerups, it was still kinda hard and I just got tired of getting lost in the relatively uninteresting terrain.  (i.e. the endless columns full of platforms that seem to go on forever)

I know getting lost and finding your way out is part of the Metroid experience, but it was just like, why am I playing this when I could play Super or even Metroid Prime.

I'm giving it another chance with the ZM bonus.

I would give you a tip, but I'm not sure you want it, and there's no good way to make mid-thread spoilers here due to the multiple skins.
