no it doesnt stay there, it takes a couple years to completely go away. only people who have smoked too much for too long however will never have clean lungs again because their lungs are too diseased to clean themselves.

It takes 6-7 years for every cell in your body to completely regenerate, and that's for a resilient body. People who decide to quit in their 30s-40s however, may take much much longer for their lungs to heal. And yeah given the severity of the damage, it might not be enough time to avoid disease surfacing.
I've been a heavy smoker for a decade but I'm only 22. Which means if I stopped now, I could have a clean bill of health by 30, but noticeable changes in my health would come a lot sooner like you said. Ugh I can't keep this shit up. Back in the day when I was smoking lots of weed too, my lungs were just a total mess.
