sweet. what's your reaction and analysis so far?
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Amon is clearly a descendant of the Cabbage Merchant. Think about it: there's a huge tech company sponsoring the tournament called Cabbage Corp, Amon busts out these fancy new Ironman gauntlets. Clearly he's the son of that poor merchant striking out for revenge against those assholes who kept destroying his fathers produce!

In the finale he'll have the city council and Korra tied up on a stage for all to see, he'll walk up dramatically and drop a cabbage on the ground in front of each of them and say, "Your cabbages."

imo best theory evar
At first I was going to agree with you guys that this was the best episode so far, but then my brother reminded me that in terms of the plot there wasn't really any sort of victories for the good guys. Korra and the brothers lost the finals and then Amon storms in and wrecks everything. Now I like the villains winning on occasion, but to have a whole episode devoted to it? I don't know. The fights were certainly the most exciting we've seen so far though. Can't argue there.

Also, we fully expected Korra to bust out the avatar state after seeing more flashes of Aang and co. Haven't seen her use it yet and if she had done so here it would've made perfect sense.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Korra has literally no spiritual sense, since that's kind of a big aspect of being the Avatar her going full on Avatar State seems kind of unlikely. What with it being a spiritual connection to all past Avatars and all. I imagine it'll be something she learns about from Tenzin. Though as it stands if she could do it she'd probably crater Republic City.

As for the lack of victories for the heroes, you have to have things go real bad for the hero(es) at some point in a story. If they win all the time there's no real conflict, Amon and his merry men are an established threat now after blowing the bending ring to hell. People knew about them and were worried a bit before but now they're taking clear violent action against the city and succeeding.

They're power players now and the fact that they won this time is what makes Team Korra's eventual victory worth anything. Seeing them steamroll everything would be boring. This is the event that drive Korra into more seriously pursuing her Avatar training I would think, she's been able to get by so far by just simply being so overwhelmingly superior to her opponents, this is now something she clearly can't just punch into submission, she's gotta do actual Avatar stuff.

On the other hand, if this:

Doesn't count as a victory I don't know what does.
Heh, true, that shot was awesome.

And I don't have a problem with anything that happened once Amon showed up. That's the type of victory for a villain I like, since he clearly showed he's a considerable threat and serious about his warning. I think the initial issue I had was that they're already down from losing the tournament and then Amon pulls this on them as well. Felt like a little too much at one point in time, but then again yeah this is one of the best ways to motivate Korra into action so it's going to be good for the plot in the end. (And it's not like Airbender or other stories haven't hit the protagonist hard while they are down so to be honest I'm not sure what my problem is here.)

As far as the avatar state, even Aang ended up using it on instinct a few times. I don't think Korra would have control over it, no, and she certainly doesn't have the right mental/spiritual to trigger it on her own at this point in the story. But this is the biggest threat she's had to face so far other than perhaps when she was alone on Aang Island. Aang ended up triggering it when he felt he was in danger at times from what I remember so this seemed like the most likely scenario so far where it could have happened.

Either way whenever it does happen for the first time it aught to be interesting.

uhhh wat

korra and co haven't earned any victories yet. they're not good at working together, they don't plan very well, and to be honest, they're just not very strong. that's why i'm glad we haven't seen the avatar state yet. was reading some other forums, and practically everyone was like ZOMGGG Y HAVENT WE SEEN TEH AVUTARR STATE YET ... who the fuck cares? the avatar state frankly wouldn't be very fun to watch (since it's basically cheating :P) this early in the series. i thought they introduced it way too early in tla even.

i want to see korra learn to kick a bunch of ass on her own, then have to train to learn to use the avatar state. looking forward to seeing her enter the spirit world though. talking to aang ftw.

think the reason aang was able to use the a. state so early was because he's a total master of airbending, which is the most spiritual element. korra isn't a master of anything; even her waterbending isn't much most advanced than her other skills. she's got a whole fucking lot to learn still.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Well those White Lotus guys declared her a master firebender and it seemed like mastering one element is required before they let her go on to the next. I think her problem is that outside of those controlled conditions she doesn't bother with any sort of pretense of discipline and just brute forces everything because, let's be honest, she can. Her being really good at the whacking dudes part of bending and being cocky about it is sort of the basis of her character, she just doesn't have the discipline and control of an Aang or Katara to do more than that though. So like firing off lightning is probably going to be out of the question for her. :v

I guess she's kind of like Zuko without an Iroh.

Aang was very in tune with the spiritual stuff though, he was talking to Roku really early on so the connection to his past lives was there. And Korra so far has managed to avoid immediately life threatening situations like crashing into the ocean in the middle of a thunder storm. The only other trigger for Aang was getting unbelievably pissed off and not knowing how to handle it, Korra does have a way of handling that kind of thing because her way of handling everything is punching.

To be fair the first time we really saw Aang do it was totally out of control and set up as kind of a scary deal that you really don't want happening. Accomplishing good with it was almost incidental, being in that state at all might as well have been a loss for Aang. It was only at the end when he had control over it that it actually became a good thing. The one time it was going to be used as a crutch the dumbass Earth Kingdom General got his little fort wrecked because playign around with the Avatar State is a bad idea.

But the real point is that yeah we need to get some Spirit Aang up in in this bitch cause goddamn.

yeah, that's exactly what i meant. she's good at using fire, water, and earth to do lots of things, (which is what the white lotus consider mastering, apparently), but she hasn't really mastered them.

i guess i'm thinking of aang riding his ball of air all over the place. that's mastery. if aang from episode 1 were to fight korra from episode 1, i really don't think korra would stand a chance. lol.

it just doesn't seem like korra is in tune with waterbending enough to do really great things with it. but maybe i'm underestimating her, and we just need to see some larger scale battles before we can tell how strong she actually is.

To master the elements you must first master yourself. /Iroh

no not my cabbage corp!
I like turtles.
I think pretty much everyone called the big twist in this episode.

Not that it was bad.

heh yeah, i was worried for a second that asami would take her father's side and become the new azula, but of course she didn't. looks like we're really starting to get into the meat of the story now, what with pro-bending being over and korra's "team" finally together. can't wait to see what's next!
