Exactly which items can you skip/get early on SM? I want to do a run with every single sequence break involved, but I'm not sure what I can do to totally sequence break the game. Could someone make a list for me, of all the items that can be skipped and all that can be acquired early (don't need any specific details regarding how and why, just the upgrades will do).
I'm too lazy to look up a list, and have never actually done this, but I'll try to make a list of the necesary items anyway.
Morph Ball Bombs Missiles Super Missiles Power Bombs 3 E-Tanks (survive the Brain Drain) Charge Beam (kill bosses with) Varia Suit Gravity Suit (Get out of Draygon's room?)
Unnecesary:
Ice Beam (kill Metroids with PBs) Wave Beam Spazer Beam Plasma Beam Spring Ball Screw Attack High Jump Boots Speed Booster Space Jump Grapple Beam X-Ray Scope
Varia and gravity suit (survive Brain Drain) 2 extra missile tanks any kind (destroying Mother Brain's container) Ice beam or speedbooster (clipping through zebetites)
Could you put all of the extra Super Missiles into Missiles, then use them to kill the Zeebetites one at a time, going back to the recharge each time, thus eliminating the speed booster/ice beam?

Yeah, plus the missile pack in front of Wrecked Ship is impossible to skip, as I understand it, so you can only get 2 Supers.
I thought I read somewhere that it is possible to HBJ all the way from the far right side of the pond room to the left side...
And, it does not matter. You still need the Ice Beam or Speed Booster to get through the room prior to Botwoon, and no number of limited ammo projectile weapons will change that.
"The Speed Boots and the Ice Beam both allow you to pass two spots in the game with different methods. If you pick the Ice Beam, you'll have significantly more firepower, but you'll have to bomb jump over the missile lake. If you pick the Speed Boots, you'll have to kill Draygon and Mother Brain in one sitting - no saving in between."
You lose the blue suit if you save, run, or fall into quicksand, and you need it to get through the zebetites. Though I think he's found a way to get through them by boosting in Tourian, which would make the restriction on saving unnecessary.

Okay, wait, I'm about to go somewhere that I should never even try...I assume this is in response to myself and RZP...but does the bomb jump have anything to do with the missile pack? When I read that I thought he just meant that you had no other way to cross the room without the Grapple beam or Speed Booster.
Edit:heh, as soon as I saw kej was on I KNEW I was about to get schooled.
Embarrasing Fact: Power suit made by lowest bidder
For speed boots 14%, you don't need to keep blue suit till Tourian, since you can get a charge there. It's still real tricky to pull off, though. For ice beam 14%, you also don't need to bomb jump across the lake anymore, since you can do the running walljump to cross the entire lake. It's a frame-perfect jump, but the timing is still much easier to grasp than bomb jump timing. In a 14% run it's optimal to have 5 missiles and 15 super missiles, but in an ice beam 14% run you generally get 10 missiles and 10 supers anyways, since you can't easily skip the missiles in the lake. If you want to skip it, you have to horizontal bomb jump across the *entire* room.
But trust me, I've looked at all the numbers, and you *have* to pack 1 more set of missiles or super missiles to take out the Zebetites.
20 missiles: Can destroy zebetites and MB's glass with only missiles and restock. Return, need 4 super missiles to finish off MB. Min of 5% in missiles.
15 missiles: Can destroy zebetites with only missiles. Can use all missiles and 3 super missiles to completely shatter MB's glass then reload missiles and return, still need 5 more super missiles for 8, 2 super missile packs. Or can use 6 missiles to open MB's glass, the next 9 missiles do 900, need 7 super missiles. Either way requires 2 super missile packs, 5% in missiles total.
10 missiles: Can destroy each Zebetite using one super missile each (4). 6 missiles to open MB's glass, 400 damage for 4 missiles, need 9 super missiles, 13 total. 3 super missile sets required, 5% total.
5 missiles: Can destroy each Zebetite using 2 super missiles each (8). 1 super missile required to open MB's cage, another 12 to completely shatter it (21 total), doing more than enough damage to trigger MB's second phase. Total of 5 super missile sets, 6% in missiles total.
kejardon: from reading you post above I get the impression that you can't use the zebetite glitch in a 14% run. . . .as you would still need a fair amount of missles to damage mother brain enough to progress in the game. actually, would it be possible to glitch through the zebetites and lower the missle count or not? (apologies in advance if this has been asked before)

The numbers I gave were assuming you didn't use the zebetite glitch. The 14% runs require that you do use the zebetite glitch so you don't waste super missiles on the Zebetites, and is in fact how the 14% runs shave off that extra 1% from 15% runs.

http://kejardon.tripod.com/Metroid/HBJ.zip From back when I started making movies of all the moves in the game, then stopped when I found out I was the only one really working on them. You might need to copy and paste the link though, tripod doesn't like external links.

Actually it's quite easy to skip this missile pack, so long as you've got speed booster. I did it several times (inadvertently) in my last speed run. So, you should be familiar with the quick-charge method you use in the room to the left of the "missile moat" room. Once you store the charge, you spinjump, then trigger a midair shinespark to the right, collecting the missile as you go. ... Well, if you initiate the rightwards shinespark at a certain height (higher than normal, but not too high), you'll make it through the door, pass right over the missile exp without collecting it, and end up on the other side, right by the door leading to "Lake Crateria" (as I call it). ... Kind of frustrating when you're TRYING to get the missile in mid-air, and spark right past it. I've done it myself two or three times (and this is on console/cart, btw).
