there are actually three in the room. one of them is hidden in the top left of the room. if you destroy all three, they'll be gone for good.
I like Big Butts and I can not lie
I still have that 9% run (ends at the Zebetites), and it's one of the most entertaining runs I've ever seen.  Unfortunately, my computer has been taken away, so I can't upload the movie file or encode at this time
pj was grounded for being too boastful.

We don't get grounded in England.  Nah, my computer was taken by the police

Here's the 9% run for all those interested:

What'd you say?
Amazing PJ! I never actually watched a ZM TAS before so this was a lot of eye candy to take in all at once. By far, my favorite part was the Kraid escape, that was freaking intense! I caught my self questioning this a few times as I wasn't quite sure if optimal room strategies were always being used, so, is this run like super optimized? As I said, this is the first TAS I've watched so I wouldn't know. I am also pleased to see that I used to follow this exact route (add the mini-boss in Kraid) when I used to speedrun this game. Can't wait to see the rest PJ!
Question regarding the charge beam guardian:

Sometimes he starts shooting little spikes at you after you hit him with the second missile, sometimes he doesn't.  Is this random?
I like Big Butts and I can not lie
The double shot I hit it with only acts as one hit (with double damage), and so I don't give it a chance to do the annoying spike attack.  And that run is very unoptimised by more recent standards.  I went Ridley first because you get power-grip (making Kraid faster), whereas Kraid gives you nothing (and nothing to make Ridley faster)
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I was itching for you to get through the zebetites. aiwebs_011

Favourite parts: Kraid's flailing arms, which almost say "Just get her out of my god damned mouth!", and the looong bomb jump across the lava zipline room.  You'll know which one I mean.

fraid I screwed myself over real good. Got all my items for 15%, skipped acid worm, killed kraid, and now I'm SoL. That long room with the ceiling thingy...I cant get through it, effectivily trapping me in this area...And I was almost finished. I've triedbHBJ though, but I'm just not good enough. Any suggestions?

lol no way
Can't be done without speedbooster, unless you want to TAS for like three hours to kill the rios. I'm pretty sure someone's done that before... but on cart it's impossible without the booster man, you are sadly SoL. Skipping Acid Worm is really only good, as far as I can think right now, for any% really. It's hard to do though so that's an accomplishment, sorry it's not gonna help you out :/ .
edit: lol PJ did it just like six posts up (TAS I mean).

I can do acid worm skip no problem. I just wasn't thinking at the time. Its fine, I reset my run, and am at tourian with a time somewhere around 50 minutes. Not too bad, I suppose.

I'm in awe of that TAS through the room that I now hate.

I need help being as consistent as aj because I don't like his strategies in the hard any%. He loses at least ten seconds overall just by detouring for long beam, and yet he's still 34 seconds ahead of my first save. >:^( I'm also miserably terrible at fighting Kraid quickly, so despite him taking 30 seconds to kill enemies instead of jumping over the hoppers before Kraid and saving after, he's 41 seconds ahead of me at the first Norfair save!

What'd you say?
Umm.... practice more?
lol no way
I don't think it's really an issue of being as consistent, just really getting it down once. If you get it down once and record it nobody will ever wonder if you could do it again you know?

Fair enough. I really haven't practiced very much as any time I have a lot of free time, I feel guilty spending it on video games.

I never could get the hang of fast boss fights in general. :^(
One shall stand, one shall ball.
just inject steroids into your fingers.
I found most MZM tricks to be relatively easy, except for the Acid Worm skip. My left thumb just isn't fast enough to morph back into Samus's normal form and jump onto the nearby ledge in a split-second motion.
lol no way
For boss fights I mean... just hang out in the room at each phase of the battle for like five minutes and memorize everything about it, jump around and try to be more steezy than you should probably try, then try the beginning of it like six times to figure out your opening attack. From there it's just knowing what options are available for patterns (like for the timing of the nails), and doing it maybe fifteen or twenty times through. I mean, watch the vid too to compare what you've learned with what it looks like I did, I dunno. I wish I remembered more to help >_>.

The main problem I have is that I'm completely oblivious to the quality of the fight, I'm just completely focused on each moment I'm fighting and thinking of its next attack. Same for the hives - I can't even keep count of the number of times I fall off the blocks. I only recently realized I shouldn't be using missiles on the first one because I only get four at that point.

Hmm. Part of the trouble with the hives might be your lack of long beam, which kills the little mellows in one shot instead of the regular two (33.3% damage added to original beam for long and ice each). Missiles are sketchy anyway just because you can't count on them hitting the hive, but I suppose, make sure you crouch to shoot them, and try to time the shot (within the moment you can see the mellow spawn pattern)... it usually has the one swirling on the bottom always out, so try to fire right around when it begins heading back for the hive (so the missile follows just behind the lil guy).
But for Kraid watching it, here's what I see:
Entrance: 3 Missiles running, 3 jumping (one shot per jump, using that rocking motion with the back and tip of my thumb)
Belly Spikes: Right after your first assault, crouch with just your front toe hanging on the little bit of platform that will remain when he breaks the ground away, then...
Nails: Crouching, you can shoot one by aiming straight, and one by aiming diagonally, so just crouch and wait for them to come. If you drop the pickups too early, inside his had, you can roll under the fingers when they're up for a split second to pick it up (as I did).
From there you get 2 shots each jump and probably the fight could be finished a volley faster than I did it.
That's all I can really say man.

For the hives, I thought you could jump onto the ledge of the last one and not get knocked into the gap. If not, I think falling once against each of the last couple is acceptable. That gets them to chase you, so the hives are unprotected. The problem is you can only get hit nine times to survive, even less if you take damage from the hives themselves. I think I get hit like five times on the first. I'm thinking get hit five times on first, use a missile on the second, get hit 2 times, play it safe and do laps around the block, then jump into the third, use 3 on the last and a couple pea shots to finish it off, getting hit maybe one more time before you're clear of them.

As for Kraid, I think I've managed 3 running, then 2 double-shot jumps, for a total of seven on the entrance. Then I have to farm a bit more than you because I don't kill the hoppers before the save room. I should be able to jump over a couple of them and get hit maybe 2 times from the rios to take less damage. Getting a fast Kraid fight is tougher for me personally than the HBJ.

Also my imago cacoon fight is supposed to go Super on first tentacle, diagonal regular as I fall, 3 missiles from beneath the left side, climb to the top left corner, 2 missiles right and one diagonal as I fall, rinse and repeat that, then same for the right side. The problem is I keep mistiming it so the spores hit me and the ripper catches up to me, or I run out of missiles and have to refill. I'm starting to think I should have taken a fourth missile tank in Brinstar before Kraid. I forgot the one on the Kraid escape. ;>_>

I also have yet to even beat Ridley for some reason. I get him to the orange before I bail out due to lack of health, but I keep messing up and doing stupid things after that, like crouching to shoot the fireballs, or getting hit by his tail as he drops over my head. I just haven't gotten there enough to actually give it a decent attempt. :^/

Quote from ajbolt89:
(33.3% damage added to original beam for long and ice each).

It's actually 50% or the original damage is added for each beam (2 damage becomes 3 with and added beam, 4 with two added beams, etc.)
lol no way
Oh, well, I'm out of touch, haha. Are there damage tables anywhere? Not that it would be worth it to make them up...
