I don't know what would be best to use for voice data but voice data can take a LOT more decline in bitrate without the quality loss that would pwn the music.
*kicks self for not getting to this thread soon enough to bagsies the Samus voice*
I think one can tell I wanted to do the voice as stated by my eariler statement. Is it too late to make an audition thingy? We could have a vote or something.
Ah, that reminds me that I was thinking of recording myself reading Samus's dialogue from that clip. I'd forgotten that Houston already said that Ummeiko would do it.
Well, Ummeiko -said- she would, but she hasn't yet... *Shakes fist at Ummy!*
And y'know, I suppose we could get a recording of each possible samus candidate with the intro text, and people could vote for whom they think sounds the most samus-ey or something. >_>
Eh, I'm not serious about it. I just hadn't seen or had forgotten that someone had already been volunteered, and it seemed incomplete to only have Houston voiced. Haven't listened to Hejira's voice clips, and am not at all sure that I'd want my own voice voted on. I might have the right attitude re a total lack of patience with stupidity and incompetence but that doesn't necessarily translate into having the right type of voice. >_>
Well, I'd need to get the opinions of the possible samus voice actresses on what to do, voting wise.
And hey, you should all consider yourselves lucky... I'd be the one telling them they didn't make the part, and I can only see that leading to me receiving many injuries :(
Lastly... I'm no sound whiz. I know the basics of recording, but when it comes to format, I'm quite the putz. If I'm going to make voice acting for the game, I need to know the best quality of sound I can get for a small size. Remember, it's an RPG, so there will be a lot of talking. If someone can inform me to what an acceptable format would be, how to do it, or anything like that, it would be greatly appreciated. Either that, or if someone could reformat the sounds after and compress them or something... Again, I need to know ahead of time.
If it's possible to use .aac in RPG maker, that'd definitely be the format to go with. If not, then maybe wma. mp3 just doesn't have the compression ability those codecs have.
For aac or wma, I'd think 48kbs 32,000hz mono would be sufficient for just voices, possibly lower. That's 6k per second, so a simple line of dialogue like "Oops, wrong missle -- run away!!" would only take around 30k.
If you do have to go mp3, use 64kbs 32,000hz mono.
Also, it's easy to produce aac files en-masse with these desired specs. All you have to do is set up a playlist in iTunes with all the sound bites, select them all, then right-click and select "Convert selection to aac". It will use the compression method set in the preferences, so you have to set that up before you convert. ;)
we're actually stuck using .wav files, as far as sound goes...
And Hejira, either way is fine, really. I think I'd leave it up to you guys if you wanted to have it expand beyond the boards or not.
As for the recordings you did, go ahead and post it. I think we're all curious to see how voice acting for samus would sound. :p If you want, you can also send me the sound files, and I can put them directly into the game, and record another video of it.
I've been trying to reach you on Y!M and MSN to discuss this with you, y'know... :p
I wheely hope that the wheelbarrow makes at leat 1 appearance in the game ^_~
I can't believe I didn't find this topic earlier, even though I don't come to the forum here often. I'll download the voice acting version for sure, as I have a decent connection and alot of free HDD space.
If the file is distributed using bittorrent (great for large popular files, believe me) I could seed at night and on weekdays while everyone is at work.
If one part of the game involves using a metroid as a taboggan I will do a happy dance
Given the extreme deadness of this, I'm going to unsticky it. (This post is so that it doesn't immediately fall into oblivion, in case anyone wants to object to the unsticky.)
