The one thing they could have done better in Secret of Mana was make the boss fights more interesting. Spell spamming made them way too easy, and when you have the Midge Mallet, they're a complete joke due to the speed spamming glitch.
Almost happy
Oh Secret of Mana is so good. Probably the game I am most nostalgic to ever. I've probably played it though at least 10-15 times with my brother. We usually decide to not spell spam on the bosses unless we have to in order to survive, since that makes things pretty uninteresting.

Quote from Quietus:
That's how I always used to play it, and it made the world of difference.  My friend would always play as the girl, which left the sprite free for me to spam-kill the bosses.

We played it sooo many times together, it was insane.  There was a period of a few months where I recall us almost doing looped runs, rolling straight from one into another.  You can't imagine the disappointment when we discovered that Evermore was single-player only. aiwebs_003

Luckily, playing through emulation, there's a two-player patch available, so you can play that one too! aiwebs_011

You should play Seiken Densetsu 3 (the sequel to Secret of Mana, it was only released in Japan but it has been fan translated) instead of Secret of Evermore, it's pretty much as good as Secret of Mana (unlike evermore which is nowhere close).
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
I never got on with it, to be honest.  I think I enjoyed Evermore mainly because it was one of those 'wow, I wish something like this would happen to me' games.  I was at that age where I'd have liked nothing more than an adventure of my own.

Got back to work on Trilogy Echoes. Beam switching is officially goddamned retarded and the fact that beams stack in Corruption proves there must be some kind of loving god out there somewhere.

Backtracking out of Torvus to the Temple Grounds for the Seekers for the sole purpose of going back to Torvus is mega lame. The fact that the only reason you need them is to go to Lower Torvus is just poopy icing on the dung cake. Lower Torvus is like a cornucopia of poor design decisions.

My memory of the Chykka was very generous to that boss, I vastly underrated it's awfulness. Because holy buttballs is that an awful boss, truly terrible in every way. To be fair that was the one point so far that Wii controls have felt like any kind of improvement so far, since it allows you to easily hit the adult form with Dark Beam shots as opposed to the cube version where it dodges half of your shots since the lock does not account for a moving target. Hard to enjoy that little advantage in such a tedious fight though. Too bored to really care.

Also I just noticed that the Torvus - Agon elevator is physically impossible if the map is to be believed, it being on the opposite side of the central hub and extending further in that opposite direction. Reason 476 why the Temple Grounds area is stupid.

I swear I liked this game at one point.Sad
Right before the backtrack for the Seeker Missiles is where I also stopped playing months ago. Don't think I'll be picking up Echoes again too soon ...

Secret of Mana is getting better every minute. I'm loving the oldschool difficulty with no heal/save points in dungeons and rather tough bosses. I'm now inside the seasons forest.

My first serious spot for weapon levelling.  Also great for levelling the girl's magic. aiwebs_011  After that, I usually don't bother until the Pure Land, and finally the Mana Fortress.
Yeah, I can see that's a great place for that, but I'm not going to break the game by overleveling my magic yet.

I found that as long as you keep the girl's healing levelled, then all of the other stuff, like the sabres (except maybe moon) and bits, aren't worthwhile until much later, when you get Wall and Lucid Barrier, and the fantastic Moon Energy!
Gosh that backtracking in Echoes really isnt that bad. From lower torvus to the seeker missile room has to be less than 2 mins, and thats if you're not boosting and going fast.

Yeah, 2 minutes I shouldn't have to spend backtracking. The is no reason anyone should have to leave an area for one item just to return to that area, either put the item in the place I need to be or give me a way around it so I can grab it later when it's convenient. And don't make me get the damn thing just to gain access to one of the worst parts the game. Lower Torvus is such a chore it's not even funny.
Well, I'm still slowly getting through Lunar: Eternal Blue. I've gotten two of the four dragon auras, and I'm trying to find the third one, though I completely forgot where the heck I was supposed to goaiwebs_017. Anyway, I've been enjoying the game quite a bit so far, and I hope things get even more interesting when I get all four dragon auras, and end up kicking Ghaleon's and Zophar's asses.

It's still odd that that one particular backtracking segment stands out even though its not the longest or most irritating.  Going from Sanctuary back to lower torvus for power bombs, for example. Much of the backtracking doesn't bore me as badly because I always go for 100%, which affects my route in ways that add more to the trips than simply traveling directly to the needed item and heading directly back.  I've also noticed that people tend to not use some of the more obscure elevators that cut between areas in favor of longer, clearer routes. I feel more irritated by the backtracking in Prime1 more than the other two games in the series. I'm just a total echoes fan, so I could go on all day about it, but meh.

You are absolutely correct. I just hit that wall playing tonight, lost my will to play right when that hint came up. That is an awful sequence.

Also I'm pretty sure those elevators you mention don't actually open up until later on when you're mostly hunting down Sky Temple Keys at least I only found one so far that doesn't require Power Bombs. They aren't much help until after the worst of the backtracking is done it seems. I really hope I'm wrong and just didn't notice the them.

In Prime the more useful shortcut elevators were open at about the time you'd want them to be and the the world seems more sensibly laid out. Doesn't feel like you have to trek half way across the universe every time you pick up an item.

I can definitely see how going for 100% helps things though, I can't convince myself to do it though. Parts of this game already feel like work hunting down every last upgrade would probably kill me.
I'm depressed and trying to get into Fusion right now.
sounds like a good combination to me ...
good idea opium, i'm sure it'll cheer you up.

my last 1% ss attempt was stopped when zazabi wasted 927359823751356 jumps. fucking piece of shit game.

Started playing Super Mario Galaxy two and Okami last night. Okami is really awesome, hopefully I'll play it more. I'm about 20 minutes into Super Mario Galaxy 2, its alright so far I guess. Not sure why it got a 10 in graphics, since Okami obviously deserves a 10 and is much better than Mario's. Whatever, it's not like I'm ever listening to ign again anyway.
red chamber dream
let me know what you think of ookami once you're forty hours in.

I wish I could find the motivation to finish Okami. It deserved better than to be dragged out to unreasonable lengths.
red chamber dream
i'm honestly not sure how i was able to do it.

Ark are you implying that it gets boring or something? :[

I really like it's art style, and I can't wait until we get a better TV (The Tv I'm playing it on is suuuper shitty, can hardly read anything).
I gave up on it because it just seemed so slow after a while.  I doubt I was even 20% through the game.  Fantastic visuals, but I just wasn't getting sucked into it.
red chamber dream
it's a really boring game. parts of it are fun and it's gorgeous of course but after a while it just gets extremely repetitive and overlong.
