I always preferred Rise of the Triad - until Duke came along, of course. You just can't beat playing as I.P. Freeley, firing drunk missiles at General Darian, who threatens you with "They'll bury you in a lunchbox!" Good times.
It also has what I consider to be the best god mode ever. See here, at 1:51.
I guess I'm more or less a ninty fan-biotche. I do find mario to be a non-character - totally generic and spread out too thin. Is it possible to be a ninty fan and not worship mario?? Zelda and Metroid are the best games ever, imo. I can't help but compare all other games to those 2 franchises, and let's face it, those are def some of the finest (if not THE finest) games ever made. I'm not closed minded when it comes to other games, but I can't help but to compare everything to them. I don't know exactly what Ninty's formula is, but there is definitely something that they seem to 'get' which other game-makers struggle to grab hold of. I suspect it's that disciplined asian mindset that doesn't compromise from it's aim no matter what obstacles appear along the way.
I'm a retro gamer at heart who considers the 8 and 16-bit era to be the golden age of gaming - and of course ninty was WAY on top at that time. I find that the majority of newer games are lacking something. It's like Hollywood: they spend huge budgets on special effects and sensory overload while the actual story/characters/atmosphere practically get ignored. The end result is a flashy movie with appeal that lasts a very short period of time.
Someone needs to make the next breakthrough in gaming concept. Flashy graphics and clever controls aren't making the kind of impact that the original metroid and zelda games made with their breakthrough ideas of non-linearity and actually going LEFT and revisiting previous areas. Those were breakthroughs that actually changed the fundamentals of gaming.
i'm a fan of nintendo but i don't actually like many mario games ... sunshine and smrpg are the only ones i really love. hopefully galaxy 2 will be cool though.

Yeah, he's definitely generic. It's as if they design a video game, and then make him the star as an afterthought. They can make any game they want - tennis, racing, golf, RPG, etc. and just throw mario in it to sell the max. # of copies. They can never try to create a personal story or even a personality for mario because he's just an icon, not a character.
Mario is a mascot. It's his job to be just generic enough to plug into any scenario but have enough personality to resonate with the audience. He's probably the best mascot there is besides Mickey Mouse.
Started Secret of Mana with an experienced friend yesterday. The game's actually fun to play now and I feel motivated to go on with my single-player file.
That's how I always used to play it, and it made the world of difference. My friend would always play as the girl, which left the sprite free for me to spam-kill the bosses.
We played it sooo many times together, it was insane. There was a period of a few months where I recall us almost doing looped runs, rolling straight from one into another. You can't imagine the disappointment when we discovered that Evermore was single-player only.
Luckily, playing through emulation, there's a two-player patch available, so you can play that one too!
