When I saw Temporary Hearts I thought it meant on a timer like the other buffs. I was incorrect. I see now.

Eventide Island teaches you some things.

there's a trick where if you throw all your weapons off a raft and onto eventide island, you can use them once the challenge starts ;)
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Honestly, I didn't have anything better than I could get on the island lol. I didn't even kill the Hinox, I just shot the orb off his necklace, but with like 16 temp hearts and the, like, triple attack buff I probably could have taken him.

One more challenge done: Dino Crisis, no item boxes.

Rules:
1. No item boxes;
2. Fresh new game (NG+ starts with unlocked weapons plus ammo, it would be overkill like FF2).

For anyone who doesn't know/remember, the item boxes in Dino Crisis are different from your typical Resident Evil: you use keys to open them, and along with storing items, they also contain tons of new supplies. In theory, the challenge should be twofold: limited inventory space and less ammo to work with.

That being said, man, the item mixing system is so good that I barely had inventory problems. Any time you run out of space, you can just mix darts and Recovery Aids and Med Kits and suddenly you have like 4 free slots. Also helps that the inventory keeps ammo/health separate from keys.

As for ammo, there's plenty lying around even if you ignore the item boxes. I still abused the hell out of those laser fences to conserve shots, and I picked mostly Rick's choices, which tend to avoid combat. The only time I followed Gail was when you have to go get the Initializer and Stabilizer. Didn't feel like doing all the puzzle stuff.

Challenge Rating: 4/10
Easier than I expected, but it had some tense moments, especially in the basement where there's a LOT of enemy respawns and not too many heals. Still, nothing too crazy. You kinda forget that the item boxes even exist after a while. Always interesting to see how much stuff you just don't need in these old horror games.
is dino crisis actually scary or more of an action oriented game?

I know I've played a game in the series waaaay back then but I remember very littlt
One shall stand, one shall ball.
As I've been bumbling around, stumbling into new towns, and meeeting new people, with only a vague idea of what I should be doing I realized that a lot of what's so exciting about BoTW is how much it reminds me of Adventure of Link and how I've always wanted a version of that game that was actually good. And now that kind of exists and I love it.

It plays 100% like old school Resident Evil, so in that way I think it's just as intense :) It doesn't have a ton of scares, though, and the setting is pretty bright and tech-y.
Who plays Kingdom Hearts?  Which titles are good?  Pros, cons?
the original kindom hearts is still my favorite (and a general favorite, not limited to the series). but I don't think it appeals to everyone (especially if not played the first time in adolescence). should be worth checking out though

second game is somewhat worse but still fun. I enjoyed birth by sleep years later on PS4 and felt like I missed out on the multiplayer on PSP. KH3 is weak but still palatable. chain of memories has a weird battle system - but I surprisingly really liked it. didn't play 358/2 days (yet)

Finished Silent Hill 3 on Extreme 6. Shortest challenge so far, 2 hours in-game.

Rules:
1. Extreme 6 difficulty;
2. Any ending except UFO;
3. No unlockable weapons of any kind.

I've been playing the Extreme difficulties since the game was released, spacing them out so I don't get too sick of 'em. My goal is to beat Extreme 1-10 without the UFO ending where you would only have to do half the game.

Enemies are already dealing so much damage, Jeez. And the health drinks barely give anything back; you need like 5 to fully recover. It's a good challenge, though, IMO worthy of the name survival horror. Plenty of rooms where you have to be super careful and/or know exactly how to solve them. Or just get lucky. Slurpers, grumble.

Challenge Rating: 5/10
I struggled with the Missionary loop, dunno what happened. It's usually pretty free. There was more danger this time, in general, because enemies can knock 70% of your health in one hit like it's nada. And Slurpers are still awful. I hate them. Still, overall, permadeath SH1 was scarier.
I'm surprised you came down with a 5/10 on that. the first time I played SH3 on NORMAL I got stuck and had to restart
Dood Trigger™
Yeah, it's a tough game for sure. I just have most of it memorized. If I were playing blind on the Extremes, damn, it would have been a disaster, haha.
there's so many enemies in that game if you come out of sh2 it's unreal lol. normally I try to kill all enemies in these games to get them out of the way, but in sh3 I run past everything in like half of the rooms because it feels like there's no end to it
I like turtles.

Almost all of them are fun, but not all of them are "good" as in the battle systems in a couple of the handheld games aren't very well-designed or balanced.

KH2FM has the best combat mechanics, but it's normally so easy that you're not incentivized to learn them.

I'd say if you play and enjoy the first game, then you have a better-than-even chance of enjoying most others as well.

For better or for worse, you can't really play them out of order without making the story very unenjoyable. Story's not great anyway mind, but tolerable if you don't take it too seriously.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
lmao I get hung up on just the dumbest shit. Spent entirely too long trying to work out the perspective puzzle of shooting an arrow through a torch to light an unlit torch to open a door when you can just walk over to the torch and light the arrow on fire. You can just light it.

Related: I pulled out a bomb arrow while on the exterior Death Mountain's Divine Beast. In hindsight, the result was entirely predictable. I am Very Smart.
I think i did the same thing with that torch lol
red chamber dream
same haha

the "chemistry engine" in that game is incredible, never seen anything like it before
One shall stand, one shall ball.
It says a lot about me, I think, that I tried throwing a lit torch through the hole before lighting an arrow on fire.

To my credit, I did manage to get the torch through.

Finished Resident Evil 2 Remake, no heals! aka 'Frugalist' achievement, with some extra limitations.

Rules:
1. No healing;
2. No Blue + Red Herb shield;
3. No infinite weapons (including infinite knife);
4. Hardcore difficulty.

I chose Claire A because to me it sounded like the easiest mode. G3 can be stunlocked with acid, other enemies are pretty safe with flame. SMG is also nice to have for distant/wobbly targets, but I ended up never using it. And Claire doesn't have to deal with Mr. X, dogs or windows as much as Leon.

This was the first time I played RE2R since my speedruns a few months ago. It felt great being able to save the damn game and collect anything I wanted. I took a dumb bite in the sewer once, got mad salty, but then I remembered 'hey, I saved literally 30 seconds ago', haha. Boop, reload.

Love this game. I think RE2R has just the right risk-reward balance for this kind of challenge. Enemies are dangerous, but your abilities and the level design can be mastered, and it feels great to plan ahead.

Challenge Rating: 3/10
Would have rated higher if saves were as limited as in S+ ranks, or if I didn't have the route memorized from speedruns. There were a couple of tricky rooms that I was used to tanking through in previous runs. Had to learn them safely now. G1 was easy with sub-weapons, G2 ditto with Spark Shot on the walkway and then stun while the crate charges.

The Gerudo are all, like, seven feet tall minimum and jacked and I am here for it.

Also is the solution to Guardians buying out the shop in that one lab that sells ancient gear so you can actually fight them? Because I am prepared to embark on a holy mission to gather all the resources to make that happen if that's what it takes get those fuckers off my whole ass.
you don't necessarily need that stuff. iirc I only got some of these arrows and skipped the equipment

yeah i believe that you did speedruns of that game
Dood Trigger™
Haha yeah, I was surprised at how fresh everything still was in my mind. Speedruns are really fun in that game though, and I'm nowhere near top level.

I'm starting Silent Hill 4 tonight or tomorrow!
just beating it is a challenge in itself for me in case of SH4. what an annoying game :/

totally optional. do you know how to kill them with a shield? that's the best way

although after playing for dozens of hours i had plenty of resources to make ancient arrows, they one-shot every regular enemy in the game, including guardians

i used the ancient armor set a lot too, it's just good in general
