So last time on Majora's Mask, I played tag with a bunch of local kids to get some secret code for a route to the town's observatory. I then went to that observatory and saw the moon cry out some magic crystal, which I picked up and took to a deku scrub in town. He was willing to give me the deed to his flower in exchange for the crystal. So I took the deed and later that night, I broke into an inn via its balcony door and went into its bathroom so I could help out a disembodied zombie hand that had run out of toilet paper by letting him wipe his... ass? with the deed. So yeah, that was how I got a heart piece.

hahaha glad you're having fun in clock town

that game is something special
Sounds like I should give DMC5 a shot as well if it's better than 4.
One shall stand, one shall ball.

fuck, no game has made me feel dumber than the witness

not even any of the myst games ... the witness is genius in that it all of its puzzles are based on a grid system maze sort of thing. it gives up variety in the macro sense in favor of exploring a ton of ideas within a confined concept

i like it better because there are always hard-set rules to follow, the difficulty is in figuring them out in the first place and putting them together

every single puzzle is either, i know exactly what to do but need to think to figure out how, or oh shit why didn't i think of that
Been playing Bloodstained.  I'm about 7 hours in, and so far it's everything I wanted.  It's like all those iga games just got crunched together into one, with better graphics and sound.
I pretty much agree, minus the graphics and sound part.

Revisiting the Devil May Cry series before I replay 5. Started with... Devil May Cry, what else.

This is one of my favorite games of all time, but yeah, certain aspects of it haven't aged quite gracefully, haha. The camera might be the biggest offender, although I tend to be forgiving of it because DMC1 was the very first game of its kind. Also, of course, the combat isn't as refined as in DMC3-5, but it still has the oomph and nuance to stand on its own.

I love how DMC1 is set in this half dimension between Resident Evil and what eventually became DMC's established identity. The castle is an amazing location, with gorgeous architecture, RE-style backtracking and excellent atmosphere. Dante even comments on things that you examine, which not even horror games do anymore.

Speaking of horror, I played on Dante Must Die mode from a fresh file. Mission 1 is absolute hell, and other early levels can be just as hard. It's pretty clear that DMD was balanced for NG+ with all your stuff from previous runs. Still, it feels good to beat it fresh. The boss fights are exhilarating on DMD.

Also, I did the whole game with 3 Devil Trigger runes, which was a first for me. It's not that bad a challenge, to be honest. It's one of those things where having 8+ runes helps a ton, but not having them just forces you to be a little extra careful. Activate DT, wreck demons for a few seconds, taunt or spam Grenadegun to build meter.

The difference that DT and Air Hike make in DMC1 is very impressive. In recent DMCs the upgrades feel powerful, yeah, but in DMC1 it's like every new power is a game changer.

DMC2 next. Oh, boy.

I miss the gimmicks, atmosphere, and Resident Evil influences in DMC. Those were pretty fun in DMC1. Unfortunately, I seem to be in the minority there. People who don't have much nostalgia for the game tend to see the non-combat aspects of the game as boring and clunky - be it the item puzzles, secret mission gimmicks, the shmup section near the end, etc.
I agree. DMC1 is tied with 3 for me.
Dood Trigger™
Yeah, I agree, guys. DMC1 just has that special care put into it. It also has the best pacing in the series IMO... the missions are short and you can skip so much of them, and then the whole third act is practically a boss rush.

Finished Devil May Cry 2.

Eh.

I played as Trish, who's considerably less of a chore than Dante and Lucia. Her move set is pretty cool with Sparda and Not Ifrit. She also has that devastating Air Raid, and a surprisingly useful version of Roundtrip. I picked Lucia's story because it's shorter. Took 1:20 on NG+ Normal.

No idea how they managed to screw up the gameplay so bad here. Everything flies a hundred miles back when they get hit, including your character, and the balancing is so off that you end up using guns more than anything. The level design doesn't help either, with tedious room layouts and some of the worst camera angles ever.

Every now and then I do see a tiny light at the end of the boring, confusing tunnel that is DMC2... most missions are short, certain fights have a decent flow to them, the atmosphere is unique, and you can see the origin of now staple concepts like Trickster. Too bad everything else is such a dud.

I'm glad Capcom saw potention in Itsuno's team, regardless of DMC2, and kept them for the rest of the series.

DMC3 next. Hell yeah! Super hyped to replay this.
DMC2 was the first game in the series that I played - only because a friend had it whom I got to lend it from. Don't think I disliked it at the time, but from all the shit I hear I'm in no hurry to replay is lol
Dood Trigger™
I'm happy you found enjoyment in it, in any case :)

Let's welcome chaos... Devil May Cry 3 is done.

Yep, still a masterpiece. The gameplay here finally established DMC's identity with the style meter, and there are just so. many. options.

Even the story is one of my favorites in gaming, no exaggeration. Cutscenes and characters are memorable, there's a couple of clever twists, the mythology is expanded in interesting ways, and the plot itself is pretty solid despite being yet another tale about evil people raising hell (literally, I guess). The character interactions are so good here.

I played fresh Hard as Dante w/ Swordmaster. I'd like to get more in-depth with Royalguard and Gunslinger, but I keep drifting back to SM and Trickster 'cause I'm more familiar with them... maybe one day. As for weapons, this run was pretty vanilla with Rebellion doing most of the work, then Beowulf taking the lead in M14.

I re-mapped my button layout in M17 to better accommodate Killer Bee jump cancels. Took a little bit to get used to it... I actually died to Doppelganger (!) while testing the new scheme, haha.

DMC3 does have some pacing issues IMO... I feel like most missions would flow better with less mandatory fights, which sounds like an unfair complaint about a game that is all about fighting, but I think DMC1 was smarter in how it handled length and downtime. Also, some enemies in 3 just aren't fun to fight. Enigmas, Dullahans, Soul Eaters... bleh.

DMC4 next.
Dood Trigger™
See ya next time, Devil May Cry 4.

I love this game, but it is essentially half a game that you play twice. DMC4's mechanics really deserved better missions to go with them... it's true that other DMCs tend to recycle their content as well, but they generally find more elegant ways to do it than retreading the exact same ground in reverse order, with even more annoying gimmicks.

That being said, holy moly, the gameplay is awesome. Nero's combat feels like its own thing with Exceed and Devil Bringer, and Dante's just OP in the best way.

Cleared a fresh game on Devil Hunter difficulty, which I kinda regret... DH is a bit too easy, and DMC4 is just better with maxed characters. I know you can refund Proud Souls and pick what you need for each mission, but still, it's more fun having everything here. S ranking DMC4 is so lame too... ohhh, let's break chairs for hardcore points!

From now on I'll probably just do Son of Sparda in my complete file instead of starting a brand new game.

DmC next!
I think I deserve a pat for beating the original Breath of Fire on SNES. Phantasy Star I and II were a lot easier to stomach. Game still had some interesting aspects though.

Maybe I just didn't play far enough, but the hookshot mechanic that let's you draw in enemies ruined the game for me. Getting close to the enemy while avoiding their attacks is part of the appeal that they ruined
Dood Trigger™
Wow, really? I love it... I love being able to continue the combo instantly after knocking an enemy to the ground/far back, and the special Buster attacks. I like how Dante retains his own play style but I have a blast with Nero as well.

Finished DmC.

This was only my second playthrough, and it's been a while, so it felt a bit like I was playing blind. Son of Sparda difficulty, continuing my main file.

At first the combat feels like the worst possible change to the formula, but eventually it clicks and then it's super fun. Pulling enemies to you, grappling towards distant targets, switching from Angel to Devil for stuns and other perks. It's a tough comparison with classic DMC, but as its own thing it works well.

I think I'm too slow for this game's controls. I often think about what button to press next, which of course is a giant DON'T in a fast genre like this. I also find myself sticking to one 'side' of the combat just 'cause I happen to be holding L2 or R2. Oh well. I know you can get used to it, just wish there was a different control scheme.

They sure like those color-coded enemies on Son of Sparda. It's nice fighting a group of flame guys every now and then, but the enemy placement constantly throws a bunch of different elements and shields at you at once, and my reaction is usually 'welp, there goes 2/3 of my move set'.

I did the gold secret mission with the grapple race course. That was tricky. At least now I'm pretty decent at the platforming.

Anyway, this game is pretty solid IMO. It has a crazy pretentious story and inexplicable presentation choices (WTF is the meaning of flashing words on screen all of a sudden?), but the meat of the game is definitely good. I actually enjoyed it even better this time.

Gonna replay DMC5 on Son of Sparda next.
Dood Trigger™
Finished Devil May Cry 5 again. Son of Sparda mode.

I'm still trying to find a good rhythm with V. Mashing buttons from a distance is oddly efficient, but no fun. And when I try to play maestro, I end up using wrong moves by accident. They could have found better inputs for these attacks considering how often they come out during movement. Just a tiny step back to reposition yourself and oops, Griffon's doing the AoE...

On the plus side, Nero and Dante are ridiculously fun. Nero's 'Air Stinger' is very useful to keep the combo going after the enemy falls, and I'm having the best time with Devil Sword Dante and Sin DT. I was really in the zone with Trickster too... Air Trick to teleport closer past an attack, Sky Star to dodge. Trickster is cool af.

The difficulty was very satisfying on Son of Sparda. I avoided using gold orbs as soon as I realized that they don't respawn (I think?). The bosses near the end were no walk in the park. I really enjoyed figuring them out. King Cerberus, Urizen, final boss. Great stuff.

There's a ton of content I still haven't done in some of these games. Bloody Palace, collectables, higher difficulties, etc. It'll be fun to do another big retrospective like this again.
