sure, but isn't it supposed to be campy and not quite serious? i mean, there's a character named decoy octopus ...
One shall stand, one shall ball.
You'd think, but, like, the games play so much of it so straight that I feel like the story itself is meant to be taken fairly seriously despite the extreme silliness that occurs at various points. I think a lot of the criticism around MGS5 came from people realizing they were actually meant to be taking this all sort of seriously and them not being for that at all.

MGS4 is the first game in the series where one really starts to wonder what they're supposed to take seriously or not. Up till that point, MGS had been the kind of campy action trip you describe, despite having occasional moments of genuinely meaningful character development and/or commentary. But MGS4 is where both the silly and serious aspects of the series got cranked up to 11, and the entire game feels like an exercise in cognitive dissonance.

That's part of it, but MGS5 had bigger issues with structure rather than the contents of its story. A lot of its important lore and backstory got relegated to unlockable cassette tapes, there were tons of recycled missions, and an entire chapter was cut from the game before release. MGS5's development cycle was a complete mess, and while I don't think Kojima is necessarily an innocent party, the brunt of its problems can definitely be attributed to Konami being a bunch of dickheads.
And the worst part about the whole MGS5 debacle for me is the engine and core gameplay of MGS5 are freaking fantastic, yet will never be used to their fullest potential. KojiPro and Konami LA worked their asses off to make MGS5 run and play like a dream, and it's a shame that all that effort ultimately went to waste.
japan never seems to be able to tell stories straight down the line
Well, it's more that their less eccentric works tend not to get as much international clout. When's the last time you've heard of a popular Japanese TV drama being discussed by weebs?
red chamber dream
don't the japanese usually watch korean dramas?
lol everyone hates their own country's art
also I have zero contact with weebs so I wouldn't really know lol

Finished Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Cutscenes.

That was my first playthrough.

Design and scenarios
I needed some time to adapt to the whole 'war sneaking' in the first two episodes. Being constantly sandwiched by two armies and all. They drop you into this warzone with not so many opportunities to experiment. I got used to it, but still prefer dealing with traditional enemy patrol like MGS1-3.
There's a lot of shooty shooty sections too. It's not as if other MGS games didn't have those, but they felt redundant here.
The boss fights were enjoyable, though. Vamp and Ray were my favorites. Plus Act 3 had the noir stalking which was unique at least, and Act 4 was an excellent throwback.

Details?
Is this game as ridiculously detailed and full of secrets as MGS1-3? I could be wrong, but MGS3 felt like it had more things affecting the stamina system than anything in MGS4. Even the codec didn't seem as packed here.

Gameplay
Really tight controls. Shooting feels good. Weapon customization looks interesting (I didn't do much with it). Mk-2 is adorable and helpful. OctoCamo is badass.

Story
I was pretty disconnected from the story, to be honest, so take this with a grain of salt. I know for die-hard fans who play MGS since the beginning it must have been an enormous deal (for better or worse), but I wasn't quite grabbed by the events here. It was neat seeing characters return, and that was it for me.
The cutscenes were just too long and too many. There has to be a more concise way to tell that story. I'm aware these numbers aren't precise, but having beaten the game, the impression I have is that I only got to play 1/3 of those 17-18 hours. Next time I'll try skipping the story to see how the game flows.

I said some bad things there but the game was a Solid (!) 8/10 for me. I liked it a lot, just not as much as MGS1-3. Again, nothing set in stone, I could change my mind.

I'm planning another big MGS marathon sometime in the near future with some/all of these:

- Peace Walker (blind)
- VR Missions (blind)
- MSX & NES games (blind)
- MGS5? Haven't heard great things about it, but I could just borrow it from my brother, 0 moneys required (blind as well)
- MGS1-3 and Rising replays

Recently I got all S+ Hardcore ranks in Resident Evil 2 Remake.

It was a TON of fun, and more doable than it seemed at first. For S+ you need to beat the game in under 2:30 (A scenarios) and under 2:00 (B scenarios), with only 3 saves allowed and no infinite guns. Getting S+ unlocks infinite OP weapons like the Rocket Launcher and Minigun.

I'd recommend this if anyone wants to get 10 or so more hours out of REmake 2. It's not an overly difficult challenge if you use a checklist with places to go and items to grab. The four scenarios are pretty similar in this game, so most of the run ends up having similar strategies.

This week I'm taking a break from games 'cause it's almost time for my Silly-Ass 30 Day Marathon!

I'm still working on the list, but surely it'll include stuff like REmake 2 and Sonic Adventure GC (which I bought a couple of weeks ago... thank goodness I never have to play the PS3 version again). Mostly short games, as usual. I'm glad I did the REmake 2 speedruns because I dunno if I could beat it in one day otherwise.
What's so bad about Sonic Adventure on PS3? The GCN version has issues as well that the DC version didn't have.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
I mean there really isn't a good version of Sonic Adventure if we're being real.

This is a screenshot of the PS3 version:

That's a bright ass purple border, and you can't hide it. I'm not the guy who complains about this stuff usually, and maybe it was just worse on my TV, but it was really distracting :(

I don't own a Dreamcast so I'm okay with the next decent thing!

hahaha wow that would bug the shit out me too
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Yeah, no that's awful lol. What the hell.

It is time! 30 games in 30 days. Can I beat all of them? Here's the list...

NES
Batman: Return of the Joker
Little Samson
Mappy
Mega Man 3
Mitsume ga Tooru
Power Blade
Yo! Noid
Zelda 2

SNES
Donkey Kong Country 3
Ghost Chaser Densei
International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
Ninja Warriors
Super Turrican

Genesis
Contra: Hard Corps
Lightening Force
Rolling Thunder 2
Shadow Dancer
Trampoline Terror

Portable
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (Fighter)
Metroid 2

N64 & Beyond
Mega Man X4 (PS1)
Resident Evil 2 Remake (PS4)
Sonic Adventure (GC)
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (PS1)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)

Plus one blind game for each category. I'll pick them during the month.

Long games: Galaxy 2 is deceptively long from what I recall... text boxes, tiny cutscenes, overworld, slower bits of gameplay. It all adds up. The first game was a 6 hour run when I did it in one of these marathons. Metroid 2 and Zelda 2 might be long too if I can't remember the route. But I'm guessing 3-4 hours max for those.

I'm doing Circle of the Moon on Fighter because there's little grinding involved. In this mode you don't get any cards anyway, and Nathan is a tank.

Starting on Monday!
man I really need to replay the galaxy games

Do it! Half the reason I do these silly marathons is to sorta force myself to replay stuff I've been meaning to for a long time :)

Day 1 - Resident Evil 2 Remake » Done!

Kicking things off with the game I've been the most addicted to this year. And I got a new S+ record in Claire A Hardcore!

Funny when you get lower times and things that were absolutely essential before are now pretty meh... I didn't grab many herbs in this playthrough, and barely carried them with me. At the end of the game I had like 2 spare greens, haha. Skipped SMG, of course. It's just a time waste IMO.

It's also interesting how you start picking up consistent tricks, like staggering zombies with leg shots and running past them, or throwing a flash bang as soon as Mr. X enters the room with the jack handle. I've done the latter 10+ times now and he has yet to find me in the library after the flash.
Another one that's kinda silly is how running glued to certain walls makes you safe from grabs. Maybe the game doesn't know how to handle the camera change?

The game is amazing, honestly. The original does the four scenarios better, yeah, but the remake has so much going on. Zombie injuries being permanent, no door loading, interesting weapons, a more nuanced combat, the new map layout. That one big shortcut still stands as the most Dark Souls moment I've felt in a game since... Dark Souls.

I got the top ranks on standard mode but never did bother to go back and do it on hardcore

seemed too difficult, idk, maybe I was just fed up of it at that stage
Dood Trigger™
I understand. It's not too bad though, IMO. The S+ limit is 2:30 for the 1st scenarios. There's a lot of stuff you can do to make the run safe and still finish in a comfy time (extra heals, always have sub-weapons on you, etc.)

I know you said you're tired of it, but if you ever want an easy route through Hardcore, there's a great guide on YouTube by a guy named Darkness. I followed that my first time and got a 2:06 with no trouble.

Day 2 - Ghost Chaser Densei » Done!

SNES port of an arcade beat-'em-up. IIRC they had to cut 3 characters from the original.

This game is so free form... even the best beat-'em-ups have enemies designed to counter all but one of your moves, and then the strategy is to just spam that move. But in GCD you can pretty much use anything against anyone.

But what really makes this game unique IMO is the special bar. Unlike most beat-'em-ups where using specials consumes part of your health, every OP move in GCD uses the special bar. And it recharges when you stand still, so it's not like you have to be conservative. It's a lot of fun to combo a group until they fall, then Anime Kick them across the screen.

I played as Makai, who has one the most ridiculous specials I've seen in these games... I don't know how to describe it in any way other than a freaking machine gun of Hadokens.

My only issue with this game is that the graphics are so damn dark. It looks kind of depressing.

Clear time: 50 minutes
T first glance I thought that screenshot was during a pause so that it isn't as dark during normal play. wtf
Dood Trigger™
Oh, the game gets even darker during cutscenes, and that screen is the ending. Gameplay looks like this:

It's not unplayable, but still...
wonder if that's an emulation issue
