Speaking of games with Dark Worlds, A Link Between Worlds was pretty good!

some really clever puzzles
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Yeah they made really good use of the perspective and the wall gimmick. It was nice to be confused by a Zelda puzzle again. Hasn't happened in a bit.

yo the link's awakening remake looks pretty cool
I think I'll have to play it to see whether I like the artstyle. Looks great at first glance but then I feel like it may be too artsy

Mario Maker 2 is going to be real timesink for me lol

Replayed Resident Evil 1-3 these past few days.

RE1 is a classic, and survival-wise it's still one of the strongest in the series (even if not always for the best reasons, like Hunters being freaking impossible to hit...). But the menus, text speed and other interface elements sure have aged in this... coming from RE2 earlier this month and then the remake, RE1 just feels slow and unrefined. I love the mansion, though.

Finished Jill's game on Advanced difficulty (Director's Cut version). I never had ammo problems, but there was a moment in the mansion revisit where I was in Danger status and every access to an item box was blocked by Hunters. Hadn't saved since the Residence. Luckily I left an Ink Ribbon in the art room by the main hall, so at least I could make a save there and keep trying until the Hunters let me pass/kill them. That was brutal.

RE2 plays butter smooth after 1. I did Leon A/Claire B. And man, even after the remake, this game is a masterpiece. It has such a great flow, nothing ever feels like it's too out of the way (hello, Code: Veronica). A/B scenarios are handled better here too. The game is way too easy though, which for me is the main negative compared to the remake.

RE3 is still my favorite of the trilogy gameplay-wise (but the other two certainly have their advantages over 3). I love the strategy with Nemesis and Live Selection, randomized item/enemy placements, dodging and stuff. Jill is sooo fast in this, holy crap. And this time I got the Eagle 6.0, which is my favorite gun in the series. I understand the complaints about the city being linear and constricted, and I hope REmake 3 gives it the same treatment as REmake 2 with new shortcuts and a more open layout. There's just so much potential with the city outbreak. Can't wait.

Resident Evil games feel great to play on the GC. The controls are really smooth. I wish I could find a reasonably priced copy of CVX for GC... would be sweet to have the full classic series there.

Will try REmake 2 extras tomorrow. 4th Survivor and at least one of the DLCs.

Replayed and finished Resident Evil Code: Veronica X (PS3 HD).

The main issue with this game is that the maze is so taxing. You backtrack a lot in RE1 and 2, but the way the map is designed in those games gives you much more control, being able to choose the safest path, ignore optional rooms and stuff. CVX is the RE game that feels the most like a fetch quest... there are few notable shortcuts, the route is long and needlessly complex, and enemies respawn constantly. Enemies being as annoying as they are here doesn't help...

It's also lame how you go from exploring a big map (Rockfort Island) to exploring another big map (Antarctic). In previous games, after the main large area (mansion, RPD, city), they generally sent you to a number of smaller areas, which was IMO way less tiring.

I wonder if the devs intended to pull a Symphony of the Night with CV... like, the whole Rockfort Island Claire part + Antarctic Base 1 are long and climax-y enough for a full game. Then when Chris arrives I bet they wanted people to go 'holy crap, this is only halfway done!' and that would be the big reveal. But the way the game is paced just makes the "inverted castle" even more exhausting. Maybe if they made Claire's part and Chris' part two separate scenarios with their own ending and credits, à la RE2, it wouldn't be as bad. Plus the forced character switching was super unfair if you gave Claire all the heavy ammo (as I did my first time...).

That's too bad, because I still think this game is pretty cool. There are so many memorable fights and places in this, the story is... weird, but enjoyable, and the music is awesome too. And of course, it's still classic RE with the same old gameplay style and all. I enjoyed it, although I prefer most other classic REs over it.

Currently downloading the REmake 2 extras. Haven't heard many great things about them, and I'm digging this classic REvisit... I might continue with REmake tomorrow, we'll see.
Code Veronica really stands out being what it is. I wouldn't want it any other way, it's a unique odd outliner of game but that doesn't suck. There's enough other options if I want to play a classic RE.
So I finished Claire B. It improved a lot once Mr. X went away. Chief Irons was a great villain.

Disappointing death though. Would have been better if Claire had been given the chance to fuck him up a bit instead.

I got two C-ranks, but overall I think I enjoyed it enough to at least think about trying to come up with a fast route for those A-ranks.
I finished all the RE2 scenarios and got the infinite knife.

I got an A rank on Leon B.  I was wondering why my previous playthroughs were so long, and I'm sure exploration had something to do with it, but mostly I think it was the fact that I didn't realize using the inventory screen to pause the game doesn't stop the timer.  That's the screen I was leaving it on for long periods of time while I answered the phone, put the PS4 in power save mode, even made dinner.  So who knows how many hours I added to the game by doing that.  Kind of lame that the timer keeps running even though the game is paused, but oh well.

It's a bit weirder than that. It doesn't run when you pause, but it does when you go into your inventory and it continues to run if you use continues. If you want to reset your time, you have to Quit and Load from your last type writer.
Anyway, I managed to S+ rank Leon A on Standard. Trying to do so on Hardcore now.

Congrats!

Finished 4th Survivor in REmake 2. Clear time was 17 minutes.

It was looking ridiculously hard for the first 3 or 4 attempts... until I decided to run through rooms as fast as possible just to see if it worked. There are so many rooms where you can dash straight through, it is crazy. Made the whole thing much more manageable.

I had an attempt where I got to the home stretch with First Aid Spray, defense buff and decent Shotgun + Magnum ammo, but I had no defense items left... guess what? Got OHKO'd by the very last plant man. Haha.

The run after that was successful, finally. I made it to the final room in worse shape than before health-wise, but still had a couple of defense items which saved me from the plant and zombies in the way.

It was an alright extra mode. No real desire to replay this any time soon.

I'm not interested in the Tofu gang. Are the DLC missions basically 4th Survivor with different people?

REmake tomorrow.

finally getting around to ni no kuni ii. i'm about 6 hours in and it's very pretty so far, but otherwise it's pretty standard jrpg stuff. at least in terms of combat and exploration ... it has a ton of "different" gameplay tacked on, like rts segments and city building. i'm digging it, but this probably isn't one i'll spend much time on besides the main story

it's making me want to try dqxi. gonna wait for the switch version though

oh and i finished god of war 100%. loved that game
Got S+ on Leon A Hardcore. Not looking forward to Leon B. That shit is going to suuuuuck. Thankfully, Claire's scenarios won't be quite as bad thanks to Acid Rounds.

REmake is done! Chris, Hard, best ending.

Jesus Mary, this game looks stunning. I love the graphics in REmake 2, but I can't help but wonder how it would've looked with full HD pre-rendered backgrounds. Also, the Wii is 100% silent while reading this game. It is a beautiful thing.

This was a pretty clumsy run, honestly. I used too many defense items, got hit when I shouldn't, and accidentally wasted a grenade that was meant for the Crimson Elder. Could swear I had a dagger equipped. Thankfully, REmake provides way more supplies than you need to beat the game, so I was never in real danger.

I discovered last time that it only takes 20-24 handgun bullets to kill Plant 42. Saves a lot of heavy ammo. I ended up never using the Magnum, though.

It'll be kind of a bummer to end this Classic REvisit with Zero, but what can you do. I may try a REmake 2 DLC tomorrow before starting Becca's Wild Monkey Adventure.

By paused I mean being in your inventory or map screen.  In this game, the action pauses when you go to these screens so you would think that the timer would pause too. Nope!  It's just stupid that I have to use the 'options' pause screen to stop the timer instead of the map/inventory screen.  They both pause the action of the main game so it doesn't make sense that they both wouldn't stop the timer.  I would understand it if the action kept going when you were in your inventory like it does for Dark Souls and other games, but nope.
the RE games have always been kind of a dick about the timer

IIRC in the playstation ones, even if the game was paused, the timer would still run

Resident Evil Zero, just made it to disc 2. Hard difficulty.

This game vs. CVX is an interesting comparison. Code: Veronica's maze is way too long, while Zero's is pretty vanilla. But Zero can be an even more tedious quest because of how slow everything is. Menus, text, animations, constant inventory management, character switching, movement in general, load times. CVX's action at least feels pretty fast, in spite of all the crappy backtracking they put you through. Zero looks gorgeous though, which I can't say about CV (at least in retrospect).

As I've been doing for the past few years, I ditched the Grenade Launcher as soon as I was ready to switch discs. This saves sooo much space, it is crazy. And it doesn't really hurt you in the long run, since you can use all that GL ammo in the mansion and hoard other types of ammo for the second half of the game.

Current inventory, pre-Giant Bat boss:

- Custom Handgun w/ 180 bullets
- Shotgun w/ 40 shells
- 8 Magnum ammo
- Stupid-Ass Hookshot
- 3 full heal items

Normally I don't bring the full heals, but since I have the space, might as well carry them for safety. Really though, I'm counting my inventory with 4 empty slots. I will gladly sacrifice those heals if I need the space, because inventory is the hardest boss in RE Zero.

I'm superstitious about first aid sprays in resident evil, so this was done PS1 style, without using any ...

this was only supposed to be a test run to knock my notes into shape. whoops

would have been sub 3 if I hadn't died twice on the final boss.

might have another go tomorrow and see if I can get 2:50

Finished Zero.

Second half was pretty smooth. Both the lab and treatment plant have safe rooms to leave characters when you're doing something as the other character, and these areas almost never require having two keys at once. The only bad call I made was not giving Billy a heal vs. the Giant Bat. I had full health, but you get chipped and grabbed the whole freaking time in this fight. Horrible boss. Almost every boss in this game is bleh.

Again I ended up not using the Magnum. I'm debating if I should skip it next time (two more slots freed), but it's a good weapon to have in case something goes out of control. Maybe I'll use it on the Tyrant and spongy mobs to conserve HG/SG ammo.

Queenie takes only 40-50 Handgun shots to distract at the end. Still had 50+ bullets and about 20 Shotgun ammo when the game was done. Humanoid Marcus is a pain in the ass. I'm glad I brought some full heals there.

I really enjoy the survival aspect of this game, all the planning that goes into leaving items and choosing the right character for the job (Billy). But I think I only enjoy it because I know what to do. If I played RE Zero for the first time today, I dunno, I probably would've hated it.
