tl;dr hollow knight's really good. I enjoyed it despite some frustrating sections, but for what it is a 12 hour game would have been enough for me. the 30 hours felt kind of overblown

What's the trick for getting through fungal gardens?  I haven't had any trouble in this game until I got to this part.  It's like the difficulty went from 0 to 100 instantly.  Am I missing some kind of upgrade?  I went to fungal gardens after getting dash.

You mean Queen's Gardens or Fungal Wastes?

Fungal wastes with all the mushrooms and pools of hot liquid

Have you learned that you can bounce off the mushrooms with a downward aerial attack? The game seems to think that's obvious but I was stuck for a good few hours with no obvious way to progress until I looked it up and learned that dair attacks are even a thing in that game.

Yeah I actually figured that part out by accident
Wasn't there a pseudo-tutorial with the mushroom bouncing thing involving a chest you can only get by doing so?
I like turtles.
In the same sense that there's a pseudo-tutorial where you can only advance AT ALL by doing so. But if you don't know a downward-aerial attack is a possible maneuver in the first place, you might still spend a while running around in circles wondering what the mushrooms are for.
I mean, it's kind of a common mechanic in a lot of games these days.

There are chests in the game?
Well, they just have more money for you, but yes.
I've been playing for a good number of hours now and I haven't seen a chest anywhere in this game.  What do they look like?
Just... a chest. You hit them a bunch of times and money pops out. They're like the ones in DS Castlevanias.
Oh I've probably found a hundred of those things.  They don't look anything like a chest so I would have never called them chests.

i don't get how anyone can say there's a lot of grinding in octopath traveler ... i'm a good 7 levels above the recommended level in every story chapter. you just have to explore everything and do the optional dungeons you stumble across

feel bad for anyone who blows through a jrpg and doesn't take their time
There's no level grinding involved, but I do get slightly annoyed by how the best equipment for each particular character at any particular part of the game is scattered across multiple towns and you never know whose is worth upgrading and when.

it's true, but there's fast travel and you can make so much money that it hardly matters. plus it gives me a reason to visit towns again to see what side quests i can get done.

i stole a great weapon with a 3% chance with therion early on, without having to savescum—that was a big help :D

which character did you start with?
Cyrus. He's kind of the best character in the game, for what I hear. Especially if you give him Merchant as a second job.
red chamber dream
yeah he's great all-around

my plan is to do everyone's storyline for a 4-character party, then do it for the other 4

starting with tressa, cyrus, alfyn, and primrose, then once i finish theirs i'll be able to remove tressa and do the other 4

the only thing that kind of sucks is that only therion can open purple chests, even if other characters have the thief job, and there's a fucking ton of them everywhere

Surprise plot twist in my PS4 journey of darkness: I took it to a witch doctor.

Nah, it was just another tech store, a smaller one where people actually did their job right. The guy used some weird machine thing and basically fixed it in an hour. The good news is that it's working, and wasn't too expensive to fix. The problem was something about the board...? I really don't know the exact term in Americano. But my console wasn't quite as dead as the other giant ass mall store told me after one month. F them, honestly. Will never take my stuff there again.

The bad news is that I lost all my saves. I don't mind replaying stuff, though. The only game I put a LOT of time into was Bloodborne, rare gem farming and all. Losing that one stings a bit, but I'll probably enjoy doing it all again. Most other games I only did one playthrough, or completion was relatively quick (RE7, Yooka-Laylee).

To be honest I'm more annoyed about having to re-download all the patches and DLCs again. But yeah, I'll try to be smart this time and back up my saves to a flash drive... >_>

At least I have a PS4 again for now. Hopefully it works until I can beat my recent new games, Mega Man 11 too.

Yay.

lmao.

opium is actully referring to objects that are all over the game with a unique sprite for each area. but there are actual chests in the game too - they're only super rare.
good thing  it worked out for your console dood!

Thanks man! I'll post on the Souls board when I get back to where I was in DS3.

only one I can find is in the area you get to after beating the boss of that place
Restarted playing Terraria, on a wholly fresh file.  My first worldgen was actually before the big 1.1 (or something like that) update, i.e. the update that introduced alternate materials, underground traps, snow biome, and much more.

This new file has lead (instead of iron), silver (instead of tungsten I think), gold (instead of platinum?), and Corruption (instead of Crimson).  Slightly disappointingly "original-flavor", since the original is iron/silver/gold/Corruption.  And furthermore, the Corruption was placed practically smack dab over the snow biome during worldgen, and so now I have a teeny tiny sliver of snow biome at the surface before it becomes corrupted snow.  Oh well.

I've beaten the first boss (Eye of Cthulhu), finally just upgraded to a Gold Pickaxe, have way too many top hats and wedding dresses (thanks to the new dye feature I'm going around spelunking while wearing a technicolor wedding dress), and smashed my first Shadow Orb recently.  I'm really looking forward to the Goblin Tinkerer's arrival, but I have to wait for a random Goblin Army invasion event first.

Also a meteorite just dropped.  I haven't found it yet.  It'll be amusing if it went and crashed into the corruption itself.

edit: Nope, it crashed almost all the way at the western end of the world, around the border between the western ocean biome (i.e. sandy area) and the standard temperate biome, well to the west of even the corruption (which spanned much of the snow biome and part of the temperate biome to its west).

Started Mortal Kombat XL.

Not too crazy about the new outfits, or the faces... Shinnok looks like a villain from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in this. New characters are okay so far, nothing amazing. But I've only played as the ones that are part of story mode, and of course I only barely tried them. I'm excited to check out Erron Black and the DLC fighters.

I beat the story mode, which took about 4 hours. Writing isn't great, but the fight scenes are cool. I do like all the nods to previous games and fan service they always have in MK. I feel that MK9's story had a bigger impact, though, maybe because they were basically rewriting all the classic events.

The combat is a lot of fun, but as usual with fighting games, I suck at it and probably won't dedicate enough time to be super good. Even memorizing one character's combos seems daunting at this point, haha. But I think I'll have less trouble choosing characters in MKX, compared to 9 where the roster is so great that I still can't focus on one.

I want to at least do arcade ladders/towers with a few characters, and the Krypt which looks pretty interesting (I like that it has a first person dungeon crawler kind of vibe).
