Day 22 - Abobo's Big Adventure » Done!

If you like the NES, play this. It's a giant love letter to those days, starring Abobo from Double Dragon. At first it looks like a DD parody, but the game covers everything from Mega Man to Legend of Zelda and Punch-Out. Countless easter eggs and references, great pixel art, and the gameplay is pretty fun.

The only weak part IMO is the Balloon Fight level, which is kinda samey and drags on and on. At least the devs were aware, because right after you beat this part they teach you a command to skip straight to the boss fight. There's also a Mega Man-style stage select that unlocks each level individually when you beat them, so you can just replay whatever stage you like any time.

Day 23 - Super Mario 3D Land » Done!

My goal was plain old any%. I know 3D Land pulls a SotN and the "end" is really just the halfway point, but to see the final levels you practically have to 100% the game and I didn't have time for that. Skipped all optional levels and I also found a warp to W2. You need 100 Star Medals to enter the W8 boss level, I barely had enough (115).

The game is excellent. I haven't played this in 6 years and I thought coming back to it would feel underwhelming after 3D World, but 3D Land definitely does its own thing. The stuff they do with 3D and perspective is just so creative. I also prefer holding a button to pick up speed over the auto-dash in 3D World.

Levels are adorable, it's like you're exploring a bunch of little dioramas. 3D World's levels don't last too long either, but I get the impression that they really expanded the terrain in that game compared to Land. Love the Tanooki Leaf, even if it is essentially "Here, hold B to win". Tanooki is so good that my track record for doing Actual Platforming™ without it is kinda poor. Boomerang is cool too.

I never played 3D land. Might be worth putting on the list.

Day 24 - The Simpsons (ARC) » Done!

Best Simpsons game? I think so. Pretty barebones beat-'em-up, but I still enjoy it. I must have played this about a thousand times at Fun 'n Games in Orlando. Never managed to 1CC it, maybe I'll give it a serious try someday.

Konami nailed the art and humor of The Simpsons in this. All the levels and enemies have so much personality. I love the nightmare stuff.

Finished U4. Some thoughts:

-I'm not sure whether this is because the formula has gotten tired or I've gotten tired of it, or because of more concrete design choices, but I think 4 might be my least favorite installment. Still fun, but I'm not convinced it captured the same feel as the PS3 games, maybe because this one came out after TLoU and was influenced by that game's narrative and action pacing.

-The rope was surprisingly well implemented without reaching Arkham Knight batmobile levels of "overbearing." Almost always fun to use it, though I don't think I got very creative with it in combat.

-Speaking of vehicle gameplay, even the car and boat segments didn't get too obnoxious, and I tend to tire of them very quickly. Good job!

-I think Naughty Dog has pretty well proven for all time that they just don't know how to do boss fights. To me, the final "boss" was probably the most upsetting, frustrating, and poorly balanced of any in the series, including Lazarević on Crushing mode back in 2. Who thought it was a good idea to introduce a completely new gimmick, with its own unique set of controls, along with extremely poor enemy telegraphing, as the final challenge of the game? I get that the concept was too good to pass up but I got very unimpressed very quickly.

-It's interesting how ND has gotten further and further away from including supernatural/magic/trippy elements near the end of each game. I understand why, you can only do it so many times before the shock wears off. Still, this one was the most "grounded" by far. Just a buncha pirates being pirates was what caused the downfall of the lost city this time.

-So Nadine just kind of gets to walk away? Laaaame. :( I guess that figures since she's gonna be in the upcoming spinoff.

-Glad they brought back the Bonuses shop where you actually have incentive to find more of the secrets in the game to spend on unlockables. A lot more render modes too. Where is Doughnut Drake though???

There has to be some reward to being the only smart person in the entire universe. "Fuck this I'm out" is the only correct way to deal with any of the shit people get up to in those games.

To be fair, Nate has tried that more than once and gets brutally punished for it even when he does wise up.

Cause he's too dumb to commit to it. Just fucking leave, dipshit. You aren't making a cent off of this venture anyway and you know it.
Megaman & Bass

started with Cold Man, which seems like it was a good choice. Boss and stage were farily easy. Had a rough time right after though. Tried all remaining stages at least once yesterday, but didn't come anywhere. Figured Burner Man should be weak to Cold Man's weapon because it's useful in his stage, however I had a lot of trouble with that boss. Three failing attempts today and I gave Pirate Man a shot - just because I really like the stage. Somehow I managed to beat him.

Now I'm afraid his weapon might be good against Ground Man, who's probably a bigger pain than Burner Man. I wish this game gave me E-tanks already. :/

i'm pretty conflicted about uncharted 4 too. it has some of my favorite stuff in the series but also some of my least favorite. the story is probably the best of the series, but you're right, it doesn't really feel like uncharted. what a strange game
Dood Trigger™
Burner Man is just a pain in the ass even with the weakness. You have to push him off the platform with the Ice Wall for good damage. Not super simple to do :\
thanks for the tip. I managed to beat him first try today. ground man and tengu man are also off the list. three to go.

so far my impression is that it's a solid game. feels kinda eerie coming from mega man 8 though.
Dood Trigger™
Dynamo should be the hardest of the 8 bosses. Let me know if you want some tips.

Day 25 - Sunset Riders » Done!

I beat SR a couple months ago on Hard and it was really freaking hard. No way I was gonna do that again. Played on Normal this time. For a challenge, however, I chose Billy, one of the pistol characters. Pistol guys fire faster, but their shots don't spread like the shotguns, so you have to actually aim and calculate angles a lot more. First time I beat the game with one of them.

Having most of the Hard mode reactions still fresh made a few parts easier than they would be normally, but the pistol threw me off numerous times. Kinda baffling that the shotgun guys are so obviously better. In horse levels Billy can't even shoot some of the carriage guys right in front of him, you have to jump and aim diagonally. They should have given Steve and Billy an actual advantage like faster movement or something.

This game is always great fun. Straight forward action, colorful graphics and catchy music.

Onto inFAMOUS: Second Son. Already this game seems to lack the soul of its predecessors. It's still fun and all but it almost feels... generic? The story/dialogue/characters are rather minimal so far and the world seems absolutely tiny, in comparison to the prior games that didn't even have access to the PS4's raw power. I get the distinct impression Sucker Punch was pushed by Sony to make a game that they didn't have a solid plan for.

best powers and gameplay of the series, yet the worst game of the series imo

Yeah, I just got my first taste of Neon and I'm thinking overall I like how powers work better in this one. I dunno, it just seems like some of ol' Sucker Punch charm isn't there anymore.

Day 26 - Wii Sports » Done!

Kinda forced myself to play this on a shorter day just so I wouldn't have to think about win conditions... >_>

I started a guest character and played Tennis until I got Pro status. Best of 3 matches, over and over. My original idea was to do some kind of short tournament for each sport, but I'm happy with this goal. Didn't take incredibly long, but man, that was quite the work out. Freaking Pro CPUs never tire.

Can't blame anyone who immediately shelved this as soon as they bought their first proper Wii game. It does look a bit much like a waggle tech demo. I enjoy it, though. It's not very deep but there's some fun here, especially in Tennis and Bowling. I gotta admit that I pretty much only play this in stereotypical Wii situations, like at a friend's place or with my girlfriend. Feels weird playing solo. Still had a good time.

Think I never played Wii Sports at all lol

I guess it's gotta feel eeriely nostalgic
Beat Astro Man and Magic Man. Astro Man's stage is pretty short and played smoothly for me. Magic Mans took me forever because I'd die over and over again at the same spot near the end of the first screen.

Onl  Dynamo Man to go. I can already see the boss run giving me a hard time.

Day 27 - Double Dragon 4 » Done!

I found DD4 forgettable the first time through, but it got more interesting as I started to unlock characters. All the effort that the devs didn't put into balancing and level design went straight to the extras. There are 20+ playable characters, most having their own fighting style and special moves. These characters don't make any of the design issues disappear, but they add some flavor to the game at least. Still a hard game to recommend.

First time playing as the Mysterious Warrior, aka DD2's final boss. Green hair and all. He's the most OP character in the game, and unsurprisingly also the speedrunners' top choice. MW can throw fireballs, do the Zangief lariat, handstand kick and more. He's fun.

This game has one of the most hilarious design oversights I've seen: you're 100% safe at the very top or very bottom of the screen. It doesn't matter how many enemies you're fighting, you can totally hide in plain sight and no one will ever bother you there. Now, it's hard to actually hit someone from those spots because enemies in DD4 have insane priority, but you can just chill and prepare your strategy with no pressure.

You may notice in the pic below that I have all my credits. That couldn't be further from the truth (lost like 2 full credits to platforming alone). What happened was, I killed the final boss and paused to get a picture of the "mission all clear" text, because the extra characters have no ending and the game just goes back to the title screen. But even if you pause after beating the boss, the level clear jingle plays normally and the game ignores the all clear text. So as I was readying the camera, with the game paused, suddenly all I saw was the title screen. Lame. Anyway, I "continued" from mission 12, beat the boss again and took the pic as fast as I could.

That character sprite strangely reminds me of Final Fantasy VI. :/

Played some more M&B - beat Dynamo Man. Thank god. The stage took me multiple attempts just to get to the boss. Beat him barely on my last life with 2 points of energy left. Still can't believe what they pulled with this boss lol!

The boss rush's gonna be a real pain indeed...

Yeah, this game is pretty tough. One good trick for Dynamo is
using his weakness to destroy the two barrier thingies to stop him from restoring his health. You can position the clone just right to hit both barriers at the same time.

Day 28 - Shovel Knight » Done!

I completely underestimated NG+. It was hard, even with a maxed SK. Double damage, less checkpoints, no chicken/turkey anywhere (well... almost). What I thought was gonna be a 1h30 cruise ended up taking 3 hours, haha. Well done, Yacht Club.

And the boss rush, Jesus. If they didn't give you a turkey every other fight I probably wouldn't have done it, at least not tonight. I love these moments though, where you go from feeling absolutely hopeless to finally sort of getting the hang of the game. I don't think I truly knew most bosses' patterns until the game forced me to learn them just now. Not to mention learning decent techniques for them. Jump slash into downward stab, super fun. Ended up performing well/getting a nice enough order that I made it to the final guy (Plague) with no chalices used. I used one just to be safe.

This game is fantastic, holy hell. I haven't even touched Plague Knight or Specter yet, and there's another free campaign coming. It's crazy how much content they're still delivering for such a "simple" game. I should re-buy this for PS4 or something, because when my hand got nope'd last year I was playing this. SK isn't exactly easy on your thumb.
