Banjo Kazooie.  PLayed for a few hours, got through the first two worlds and much of the third one when I gave up.  Just can't cope with that awful camera.

I wonder how you'd feel about a game like Ninja Gaiden, where sometimes you can't even see your guy on the screen... BK's isn't bad IMO. I mean, compared to recent games it's probably trash, and you'd think they'd allow you to toggle a horizon angle since there's no map. It helps to familiarize with the areas (which are all fairly compact).

If you were in Clanker's Cavern it's understandable why you'd feel like giving up, though. That place has some dumb angles, and it doesn't help that it's an underwater level. Gets better after that one, I think.

in bk you really need to be constantly moving the camera, or you won't have fun. if you let the game control the camera for you, yeah it sucks

That's true of Super Mario 64 and like 90% of 3D platformers from that era too.

Trying to actively control the camera in Mario 64 was a fool's errand. The damn thing would constantly slide into another uncomfortable angle at every turn.

It's better than leaving it to it's own devices though!

no man's sky still. haven't left my initial system yet, even though i have a working hyper drive ready to go. i want to explore everything in this one system at least, but i probably won't try and do that for all of the systems on the main path. mostly, i just want to add as many inventory slots as possible before moving on.

one of the planets near my homeworld has these giant floating cthulu monsters, as well as these floating worms that fly through the sky ... kinda metroid-esque. so that was pretty cool. i'm also enjoying watching let's plays and seeing all the different types of worlds people reach. makes me want to keep going

Trust me, I'm constantly trying to control the camera, but I'm constantly fighting the auto camera.  Sometimes I press R to move the camera behind me and it just spins 360 degrees. Sometimes it does nothing.  I'd say R only works about half of the time.  Controlling it with the right stick is also a battle.  The only time you're truly free to move the camera around is in 1st person view, but the moment you come out of that view everything sucks again.

eh, you get used to it. can't say the camera is one of my complaints with bk. it does suck in sm64 though
Maybe I will try it again later.

I watched a video showing 20 minutes or so of gameplay for Breath of the Wild.  It seems so similar to the game that my sweetie is currently playing: Far Cry Primal.  It shows Link roaming in a free open world collecting tons of little things like sticks and rocks that he can use to craft things or build fires.  I haven't played any games like that before because it seems like it would be so boring. I'll play this one because it's Zelda, but I have to say I'm less excited about it after watching that video.

SNES 25th birthday today. I still remember being in Orlando with my parents and seeing a SNES for the first time at Sears, of all places. Got mine with Super Mario World, spent months playing just that until my dad could afford more games. Good times.

I think the most excited I've ever been for a new videogame was when I was 9 and my mom bought us the SNES port of Mortal Kombat 2 (excellent parenting). I was in swimming class and that was the single longest morning of my life until we finally went to the mall and got the game. To this day I love and hate swimming pools an equal amount.

Played those two games just now. A quick warp run of SMW and a Jax gotcha-fest in MK2.

I wouldn't get too discouraged. Ubisoft are kind of infamous for having really boring open-world games. A lot of developers have managed to outdo the stuff their teams have come up with over the years.

i can't wait for breath of the wild because it finally looks like something different from the series. if we got another game like skyward sword i would be HUGELY disappointed
red chamber dream
it probably doesn't hurt that i like open world games, though
I thought you preferred set piece corridors...

hmm i wouldn't say there's any genre i like more than any other

except third-person character platformer, which is the best genre ;)
I meant that you liked linear games more so than open world sandbox games - or at least I thought you did.
red chamber dream
i like both genres. depends on the game

Why is everything an either/or situation? You can like chocolate AND vanilla, you know.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Except vanilla is 100% deffo for losers, so not if you're cool.

Ninja Gaiden going Souls, to a shameless degree. I can't really tell how exploration-focused it'll be so far but probably not enough. So much RPG shit trying to distract me from playing the game, including tiny seemingly insignificant bonuses on every weapon akin to Bloodborne gems. It feels unrefined, like Demon's Souls, except they had 4 other Souls game to take notes from so there's no excuse. Rather than feeling excited about having another Soulslike I was thinking about playing an actual Souls game instead. It has a bizarre Bloodborne-esque regain mechanic, except for Stamina, where you regain more Stamina if you press a button the moment it refills. It seems unnecessary and clunky. Also very annoying, clumped enemy placement. It does however give you a choice of 60fps/720p or 30fps/1080p and runs really smoothly so far, so that's something Souls can steal any day.

Playing through Devil May Cry again (the original, not the edgelord reboot) and it... did not age well. The combat feels bland after DMC3 and Bayonetta, and the level layouts are a bit too convoluted for their own good. There's still a lot of cool shit and it's a solid foundation for what basically became an entirely new subgenre, but what came after it is so much better that it's really hard to enjoy as it is now.

Also, once you know it was once Resident Evil 4, it's really hard not to see RE around every corner. That's not a negative or anything, it's just very weird.

I agree that future games improved most things (especially the camera...). 1 is still my favorite overall, though. Compared to 3, which is a masterpiece IMO, 1 still has the best enemies and bosses. They're full of little nuances and interactions like critical hits and pattern manipulation, unlike 3 and 4 where they're all essentially punching bags meant to boost the style meter. I still have a save at Mission 17 DMD just so I can fight Nelo 3 over and over.

The combo system is kind of laughable compared to 3 and 4, but I think the game offers enough tools to mix things up. The guns are great allies in DMC1, and Alastor/Ifrit are perfectly balanced.

I also think 1 has the best pacing. As big as the action aspect is, it's surprising how little you're actually forced to fight in the original. In 3 and 4 there's a mandatory fight at every corner, while in DMC1 it's rare for a mission to have more than 2 forced encounters.

I do love the Resident Evil influence... of all DMCs, the original feels the most like an adventure. Going out of your way is always a good idea, and the world is super tightly connected (after M16 they even change the garden areas to night time). Dante comments on just about anything you examine, and the castle is a beautiful place with great atmosphere. Story's super cheesy, though. DMC3 has one of the best stories in gaming (I really do believe that).

Well I consider DMC3 to be literally perfect, so yeah, DMC will always come up short compared to that. But to be fair, so does every other DMC game. Bayonetta 1 and 2 are the only real contenders to DMC3 in my eyes.

well, NMS kinda lost a lot of luster really fast for me. Turns out all your discoveries are wiped after 2 weeks anyway.

Hopefully it'll get updates to bring more content in, but the npc interactions and "puzzles" didn't ever expand or seem meaningful after your first few encounters with them.

I don't regret playing it, but I did expect to get more out of it. Not a bad game, just definitely way too over hyped before it's release.
