It's not bad in a "oh cute, they think they can story" kind of way, it's bad in a "what I just saw angers me intellectually" kind of way.

Beat Normal, Hard and Expert modes in Star Fox 2. Giant wall of words below.

Man, this is such an interesting game. It's totally finished and you can play through all the content, but at the same time it lacks little touches of a full release. The text has been patched to English and several debug elements were removed in this version (like a frame rate counter). Feels like they intended to add cutscenes/mission briefings before all the levels since you're kinda just thrown into the Lylat System with epic problems to solve. But maybe that's just how they planned it.

The design is really unique too. Instead of playing through a linear route of rail levels, you control your little Arwing icon on the map screen and take it to various spots where the action missions take place. It's not that simple, though: as time passes, both on the map and during missions, enemy ships and missiles will travel in the direction of Corneria. There's a damage counter for Corneria, and it's a game over if the planet takes too much damage. You can intercept the missiles and ships on the map and destroy them in a mini mission, but if you take too long to clear the main planet missions, Andross might send even more stuff in Corneria's direction. Even fixing your ship is part of the strategy because you need to travel back to the mother base on the map, which takes time.

There are six pilots to choose from: the four main guys we know, plus two newcomers who are fun as hell. The pilots have different stats like health, speed, how long it takes to charge their shot, and what type of items they start with. The newcomers have the lowest health, but they start with the powered up shot and they take less time to charge shots. You also select a partner who gives you tips during missions and who you can switch to (on the map) if the main guy takes too much damage or if you so desire.

There are sooo many ideas in this that got reused in SF64 and other sequels. The whole all-range thing started with this game, same with charging the shot and Star Wolf scenarios. And the walker ship will be in SF Zero. It's fun to use, though not quite as badass as the Arwing.

I really enjoyed the game. Normal and Hard are pretty much kiddy mode compared to Expert, but only because on Expert you have to deal with so much more crap thrown at you on the map. Expert almost plays like a speedrun 'cause you have to do everything fast before stuff hits Corneria. But the difficulty action-wise is always pretty low. My one big complaint about SF2 is that there aren't many classic shmup rail levels. In fact, I don't remember any. They were either land based missions where you can walk around with the biped ship, minor obstacle courses, or Star Wolf chase scenes. But it's okay. So glad I played this!

You might be interested to know that many aspects of Star Fox 2 were used in Star Fox Command for the DS, including the Corneria defense/map movement thing and the different pilot stats. Might be worth your while to give it a look.

That's awesome, I gotta check it out :)
G-Zero will always be the official ending to the Star Fox franchise in my heart.
Why Nintendo hasn't polished and released it digitally or as a DS/3DS game is beyond me

Honestly can we expect nintendo to polish and release anything for the 3DS?

Wind Waker to the WiiU was great and all, but I think the 3DS will get neglected for quite some time

Perfect game on Expert! This game is really addicting

Played as much as I could of the original Super Smash Bros. on the N64. Never played this before.

Surprisingly fun game being the first Smash and all. It's lacking certain things that are now staples, but the characters are fun to use. It's hard to justify revisiting this game having Melee around, but I gotta say I had more fun than I expected.

I ended up unlocking everything since this game is only a fraction of Melee and Brawl's size. Sound test was the hardest unlock... some of those bonuses are tricky, especially the ones where you have to break a target/land on a platform with no way to get back on safe ground. I know those are supposed to be done last, it's just frustrating when I screw up at the very end having done everything else in the stage (screw you Jigglypuff!). Still, I had a good time figuring out the best strategies for all the characters.

Now the only Smash I haven't played is the new one. Really don't want to spend a kajillion bucks on the game + all the DLCs... and I don't know if I should be expecting a complete edition kind of thing from Nintendo. Bleh.

Conquered the Mario rank in Star Fox 2.

Pic

SF2 info is so scarce that there's a whole set of collectables in this game (Pepper Coins) that no one knows what are for. So I was watching an Expert speedrun the other day and, what the hell, this guy's final rank was a shiny golden Mario face instead of a big shooting star. With a little digging through other YT videos I learned that if you score over 250K points in a perfect run (0% Corneria damage, no deaths), you get the Mario rank.

Truthfully, it's not that much harder than simply getting 0%. My previous high score was 226K, which isn't far off. The problem with the Mario rank, however, is doing the whole perfect run even faster since the biggest score bonuses are for beating stages fast (as far as I know, anyway). I wonder if you could hang out inside the levels and defeat as many enemies as possible until you score 250K, but with the map system and whatnot I didn't think that was worth the risk.

Now here's hoping there isn't an even higher Samus rank or something... >_>

Only one way to find out!

That star fox game seems really interesting though, very peculiar
red chamber dream
when you think of it, most star fox games are. the original and sf64 are the only star fox games that actually follow the "star fox" formula.
Dood Trigger™
Yeah, now I'm really curious to try SF Command and SF Assault. I had so much fun with the land gameplay in SF2.

I got sick of it about halfway through. :/

It's been years though, maybe I should give it another shot sometime.
red chamber dream
it has some cool mechanics and a ton of variation in environments ... that's probably what i appreciate most

i think 90% of the shit it got was purely because it wasn't a "star fox game"

I dunno, I went in fully expecting a Zelda-like with barely any Star Fox elements and I still came away let down.
