I was just trying to say that there's different motivations behind the exploration.

Definitely.  Another thing noted was the puzzles.  That's not a souls thing really.

And I've never heard the "Zelda for grownups" thing (what), but I also avoid the general Souls community like the plague lol.

It's basically the argument that the Souls games focus on exploration-driven dungeon crawling with more challenge and without all the handholding that Zelda has come to be known for. I think it's a pretty superficial comparison, but whatever.
I like zelda and souls for different reasons.  It's kind of why I like pixar movies and horror movies for different reasons.
Of course, the last time I heard it discussed in detail was by some guy who thought the N64 was a piece of shit and that Nintendo hasn't made any good Zelda games since LttP, so there's all the more reason to take it with a grain of salt.

What a knob.

I'm really glad that I found souls and regret not starting sooner.  I'd been stuck in this slump where I couldn't let go of nintendo even though 90% of what they'd been giving me was shit for years.  It was a bad marriage that I couldn't get out of.  Now I have a new lover, but ninty and I are still friends.
Some things are just not worth remembering.
It's always nice to have a varied taste.
(Says the guy who's played way too much Dota and has been replaying a bunch of Final Fantasy games lately)

Indeed.

It really does feel like I've gotten out of a lingering bad relationship.  I have all these plans now and so much more to look forward to.  All my friends could see it wasn't working out, but I was so blind.  Now I can get on with my life.

What's dota?

Defense of the Ancients. It's basically a multiplayer fortress assault game where you take control of a character and work with your team to break the other team's base.

For me Souls is pretty much "Zelda for adults". Sure they're different, but Souls does all the stuff I used to love about Zelda in a way that I can still enjoy it as an adult - and does it BETTER. When I was young the dungeons in Zelda were still spooky and dangerous, the enemies and bosses fear inducing and threatening to me. Talking to NPCs was almost exclusively left for side quests - I could always go jump right into the action if I felt like it. Zelda also has the interconnected maps. The overall plot also was a mystery for me. I remember how as a child I read stuff in the official guide book to puzzle the lore together haha

... doesn't mean I hate Zelda now. I'm going to buy the next game - as long as it's on the Wii U, and will most likely get a lot of enjoyment out of it. If it's NX exclusive... I don't even know if I'll purchase that thing whatever it's going to be...
I just googled it.  Definitely not my thing.  Which means I'll probably be into it in a couple of years.
Eh, don't count on it. I feel like the MOBA genre is gonna burn itself to the ground in a couple of years.
Brand loyalty will never truly make sense to me for something as untransparent as video game development. Souls is pretty much the only non-Nintendo franchise I care about (Castlevania is dead, I will get over it at some point maybe), but what makes someone not play something they're interested in because some strangers made it instead of those other strangers eludes me. There's no "letting go" involved, it's not a person. It's like people never recover from schoolyard console war indoctrination lol. Even as a kid that grew up entirely on Nintendo I just saw it as "kids can only afford having one of these" since my Playstation friends were all cool with it, instead of the tribalism that it generally was outside of my circle of friends.

Discovering Souls unfortunately won't turn out to be a pattern. There's no happy ending when it comes to discovering multiplayer games.

It's fun reading these comparisons because the reason I got interested in Souls in the first place was the idea of being thrown into a hostile world with a sword and shield à la Zelda. Of course when I played the game I realized it was more than that, but yeah, that was totally my thing with Souls at first. So in a way I guess Zelda introduced me to Souls.

For me Zelda is a totally different beast though. It has more than earned its place, and Souls didn't really change how I look at it. I still play OoT and MM and LttP with a stupid smile on my face.
I played DOTA way back in Warcraft III. It was the worst kind of online game I've ever had the pleasure to experience. The game was unbalanced as fuck. The whole point of was to use any means possible to get a head start on the enemy so you could keep making free kills, robbing the enemy of all their EXP in the process making the whole thing a every one-sided affair. It wasn't fun. Everyone just hated each other.

That makes sense.
That's fair, I was arguing purely from a gameplay perspective. I just don't get the "adult" part.

Well, screwing over your opponents is kind of the point of competitive multiplayer games, but eh. The game's definitely gotten a lot more balanced over time, but the community is as cancerous as ever. Loads of flaming, scapegoating, and foreigners flooding servers they shouldn't be in.
I didn't suffer from brand loyalty per se.  I've always owned multiple consoles, not just nintendo.  For me nintendo was kind of the point of reference I used to try to determine if I liked something. I knew what I liked and naturally would compare other things to that in order to determine if I should investigate something else.  If something was described as being like something else (metroidvania, etc) then I wanted to try it.  I never felt like I was betraying nintendo when I played something else so definitely not 'loyal'.  I just don't have a network of gaming friends any more, and there's so many new games coming out all the time, and all I can do is read about them.  What I read about souls made me think I wouldn't like it.  And I had tried so many things that I hated that I probably became a little close minded.
Usually, the easiest games to get into are ones that can be discussed at length by a bunch of other people. It gives you a lot more motivation to finish them than having someone say "Oh, this game was fun. You should check it out!" and never mentioning it again cause it's too niche or obscure.

Vanquish is really fun though. You should check it out! :)

lol

In high school my circle of friends and I would talk about games we were playing, or hang out with each other and they would show me the game they were playing, etc.  That was how I found out more info about games and it was easier than reading things from people I don't know. If I had that kind of info source today then it would be really helpful.  My sweetie does have different game tastes than me and I do get some news and info from him, but not much.

Today I seem far less likely to just grab a game that I know nothing about and play it.  I did that with NES metroid and castlevania.  Never heard of either one, just went into target and bought them without knowing what I was getting.  Little did I know that 3 decades later I would still be talking about them.
Talking about how extremely dead they are. That's one way to get over a bad relationship.
