Kinda struggling with my gaming backlog now. I only have Deadly Premonition unplayed on the PS3, but the framerate is dumb. I do own Assassin's Creed 3 too, which came with my Super Slim, but I've never played an AC before, and many people (you guys too IIRC?) said it's not best to start with this one, or play it at all...
On the 360 I have Halo Anniversary, which I do plan to try again but I'm terrible at it. Then there's Skyrim and Mass Effect which look super long.
On the PS2 I have Killer 7 and RE Outbreak, both of which I started but quit about 30% into them back in the day (I did the first two scenarios of Outbreak for sure. The third one is fuzzy so I probably didn't do any of it... all I know is that it's set in the RE3 hospital).
Then there's Smash Bros. Melee on the GC and Tropical Freeze. Neither a bad choice but I'm planning to revisit a bunch of Nintendo stuff shortly, don't want to get burned out.
Do you guys recommend any of those games that I mentioned? Does it take forever to unlock all the characters in Melee?
You can get most of the characters fairly quickly in Melee, but one in particular takes 700 vs matches or 20 hours of total combined vs play time to unlock, which can be a huge pain. The easiest way to do it is to leave an unlimited time stock match with 4 human players on in the background overnight, it'll only take 5 hours that way. That requires you own 4 GCN controllers though.
So i'm several hours in Paper Jam and it freezes, so I restart. Freezes again. Restart. It tells me that my software is 'broken' and needs to be repaired. My save file will not be lost, but it needs to redownload the game. Weird.
Finished Killer 7 for the first time. What a mindfuck of a game, haha.
I spent about half of it hating everything about the gameplay. I won't say that it grew on me because I'd still rather have full control of the characters and all, but at the end I was enjoying the combat a fair amount (especially when I figured out how to do counters and quick turns), and the last few levels didn't have much BS in them. This actually wasn't the first time I tried the game... a few years ago I quit somewhere in the second mission 'cause I found it too tedious. This time I pushed through it and ended up having a great time.
The story is nuts and the game is full of style. I love the graphics (already loved 'em in No More Heroes), the sounds, and how weird some of the characters are. As much as the combat frustrated me, there's definitely a lot of strategy and decision making in it, and I appreciate the fact that you can't just Rambo through the game. The puzzles were easier than I heard, but that's not a bad thing. Fetching items and figuring stuff out was never too obnoxious. I only looked up the strategy for one boss fight because I was playing for like 3 straight hours and the whole death/revive thing was pissing me off.
Very unique game, there's really nothing like it, and I'm glad I didn't quit this time.
I gotta track down a GC copy 'cause apparently it has better load times... all that character switching and door loading are a major pain on the PS2.
Been stuck on paper jam for a while. The game has no challenge at all, just pure casual fun, until you get to this one part with a series of lengthy, unforgiving stealth rooms. You have to get past all these minions without any of them seeing you, and some have no pattern to them, while some seem to have a totally different sight box than others. Plus there's three people in your party and it's almost impossible to get all three of them to hide behind columns that are only as wide as one character. Many times when I'm spotted, I can't tell visually that any of my characters were in the line of sight of the minions, because it totally looks like I'm in a safe spot, like the depth is off or something. And every time you are seen, they put you back so far and make you watch the same crap over and over. I spend more time watching it reset than actually playing. About to quit the game over this.
You aren't the first person I've heard to rant about that. In fact two of my friends lamented about that section quite a bit. Immediately after that stealth section is a
difficult boss battle, and you can't save. If you lose the boss battle you have to do the stealth thing all over again as well.
lol I totally got through the stealth section almost immediately after bitching about it. I didn't even take any damage during the boss fight, it went by fast. If you use amiibos wisely the game is almost broken.
I was definitely at a higher exp level going into that fight because of the amiibos. Every time I fought enemies that gave decent exp, I would have a battle card that increases exp and coins for that fight. The battle card costs 7 star pts to use, so I use 1 amiibo to reduce the cost by 30% which brings it to 5 star pts. Then I would activate the battle card. Then I would use another amiibo to activate a sparkle card that gives me 4 star points. Then I would kill the enemies and be awarded 1 more star point, plus 150% coins and exp. The battle card cost 5 star pts, but I am able to also earn 5 star pts. Couple that fact with an amiibo that let's me replay that battle card at the beginning of each fight and I'm set. I can do it the whole game practically.
Just finished the Master System version of Ninja Gaiden for the first time. Very cool game. Someone mentioned it at GFAQs and I had to try it.
This game has more of an emphasis on platforming, and it's pretty enjoyable. You can wall jump by holding the jump button when you touch a wall, and you can grab certain platforms from below/drop from above and hang. I don't recall any moments where I was too frustrated at the jumps. Some tricky enemy placement here and there, like an eagle clearly placed to knock you off a platform when you jump to it, but nothing we haven't seen before.
This is also a LOT easier than the NES games. I finished it in about an hour. The one level that gave me trouble was 6-1 or 6-2 I think, with rising lava and some annoying flames that keep chasing you. The level design is completely different from any other NG by the way. This game is 100% its own thing. Bosses (even the last one) were simple with the homing ninpo, and in this game you get hundreds and hundreds of ammo to use ninpo. Seriously, I was at 999 for pretty much the whole second half. Not even getting a game over takes your ammo away, or the ninpo you're holding, for that matter. Infinite continues too.
The one gripe I have with this game is that there's a certain (intentional) delay when you attack. The sword doesn't come out as fast as in other NG games, throws me off all the time here. I still prefer the NES games in general, but this is a really cool and unique entry.
I got all the way to the final fight in Paper Jam. It's actually a series of fights and you can't save in between. I got through wave 1 and wave 2 without taking any damage, but each wave took about 10 minutes. Then the third wave comes and the guy just does something and all three of my characters die instantly. I have no idea what he did or how to prevent it, but the funny thing is I just don't care. The game has been a complete snore fest and I just can't wait for it to end, so as far as I'm concerned it's over. Total waste of time and money. Total garbage game.
Pokemon Y. I haven't touched this series since mid-Gen IV so it's definitely sufficiently different to at least be initially interesting. Not sure yet if Super Training is more or less annoying to grind than just fighting for the right EVs, but at least it's available from the get-go.

yeah sounds about right from everything I heard from my friends about it.
the first mario & luigi game is an amazing game, but every game after it hasn't been nearly as fun. i think they should've stuck with the wackiness of the first one.
