Finally broke down and started FTL, it being one of the few games in my Steam library that can run unfettered on my cruddy Intel HD graphics-powered laptop.
It's incredibly addictive but I think I'm starting to despise the difficulty balance with a passion. Seems like the enemy scaling goes at a quadratic curve to the player's linear one.
Yep, it's definitely a game where you have to get really lucky. I remember getting to the final boss 3 or 4 times before being obliterated. I flet no remorse hex editing my money on another playthrough. Made it way more fun and still a challenge to not die.
So I've been playing Deus Ex lately, and holy shit this game is incredible. It's got that old school System Shock level of environmental interaction combined with some light RPG mechanics, open-ended level design, and branching plot based on in-game decisions and tactics. I love it.
I got Eternal Darkness as an xmas gift and I played it from 4pm until 9:30pm. I was really enjoying it, but then I died and realized that absolutely none of my progress was saved at any point. Seriously?! There was one part where I died many time but I was always immediately and automatically resurrected, so I wasn't really concerned about dying, and another part where I tried to use the save/load option in-game and it told me it was unavailable, so I just assumed I would find some kind of save room or something at some point that made saving possible. I just played for over 5 hours and now I'm right at the beginning of the game again. I liked the game, but not enough to replay the first 5 hours. So fucking pissed.
eh, it's an old game. autosave wasn't really a thing then. did you read the instruction manual?
I never thought it auto-saved. It's a fucking gamecube game. I said I was looking for some kind of a save room because when I tried to save manually in another location it wouldn't let me.
seems like maybe it's an option in the menu? anyway, this is why i always read the manuals for old games ... often you can learn a ton of shit that is never mentioned in-game
There are only a few rooms in Eternal Darkness where you can't save. If the option can be highlighted on the pause menu, you can save your progress. You also load the file literally on that spot where you saved, which is pretty handy.
no joke the first thing i do when i play a game without autosave is save ... gotta learn how the system works before i'm willing to do anything in the game
Yes, on PC. It also had some extra maps, weapons and vehicles. It didn't have voice chat but it had text chat. It was such a blast! The server were shut down about 2 years ago, and although 343i said it was due to the low population of players (around 1000) I'm quite sure it was simply due to the re-release of CE on the 360. :(
If so, yes, there are ways to play online still. However, you need to get people together and you have to go through a process - once it's complete of course you can play anytime.
Also, if you haven't heard of Halo: Custom Edition, I'd look into that - lots of custom maps (some take fucking hours to trek), ai battle maps, single player maps, reinvented maps, etc
