Only played a little bit of Double Dragon 2 this weekend. Few runs, one of them finished without losing lives (first time for me) in 19 minutes.
This game is random. Or rather I'm random playing this game. That gorgeous deathless run came right after not one, but two failed runs where I lost the most insanely dumb lives possible (going too far down in stage 8... stage 3 helicopter door... has anyone ever died in the latter?).
Happy with my progress, though. Those two stupid runs aside, I've been consistent at beating the game which certainly wasn't the case when I first picked it up for regular play. Getting better at the knee timing in general, final boss isn't looking so scary lately. I don't see myself getting as consistent at DD2 as I am with Ninja Gaiden 1, because it's really easy to mess up and kill the run here. One wrong jump and you lose a valuable HP bar for the latter stages, and there are no continues to ease the pain here. Still... progress.
Finished Viewtiful Joe. First run in 8 years, forgot how short it is! =O
I actually forgot a lot of things about this, mostly boss strategies. Gran Bruce killed me 5+ times and I got a little salty, but then I realized that he must be weak to fire when he's out of the water, and I Red Hot Kicked a few HP bars out of him. I also keep forgetting about Zoom... >_> It makes your punch super strong and I was just ignoring it for no reason. The final bosses kicked my butt. The last one specifically, I just can't remember how to beat him properly. Got owned a lot by the lightning.
Red Hot Kick sure is useful. Glad I remembered to buy it. Another Joe is my most hated boss to fight legit, but he can't do much about a flaming kick to the face. Stunlock'd! I also skipped the majority of Episode 4 by jumping over the missiles. I wonder if that's intended because it is a giant skip.
The combat is so satisfying. I always saw it like Devil May Cry 2D, even though it has a lot of key differences. Just the feel of it, dodging and countering, plus some of Joe's moves (and Alastor being literally alive). Truly one of the greatest action games IMO. I want to do another run and maybe perform a little better, but I'm too curious about VJ2 now. Surely it won't take me another 8 years to replay this.
Joe 2 begins! I only had the one file (last saved in Aug/2006 O_O), which likely means I've never done a fresh run after that first file was max'd. Pretty exciting to revisit this game from scratch, feels like it's my first playthrough. They sure take forever to give you Zoom, I'll say that much. Would rather have that over Silvia's Replay.
Wall of text:
It's hard to put my finger on why this game isn't as memorable as the first one. There are issues like slowdown (not talking about the Slow power; VJ2 has good ol' frame rate problems) and the levels not having a lot of secrets in them, which I do miss a lot. VJ1's levels are full of optional fights and hidden little alcoves with valuable items, but in VJ2 it's almost impossible to miss V-Films, let alone find hidden stuff. Silvia isn't as fun to use as Joe, although I appreciate the effort at giving her unique moves. Speaking of, this game doesn't have any unlockable characters, which is a bummer since VJ1 gave you a bunch of them. Would have loved a Blue-Black duo to own everything.
That said, I do think the sequel does a great job at introducing new VFX puzzles and enemies. Love the balloon guys you have to Mach Speed to bring back to the ground. Most enemies are recycled, but they're also given a twist like the tank now being a drill tank and the gunslinger being a... space gunslinger (different patterns and all). I also love the variety of levels here. While VJ1 had a more generally urban/industrial setting, VJ2 goes full-on videogame with each level having its distinct look and being set in different eras.
Reel 3 now. I'll continue tomorrow.
I thought it was weird that I had the infinite VFX unlocked since I never got a full Rainbow-V rank in this (haven't beaten the modes above Adults either... should be fun to do that sometime). But it turns out that infinite VFX was a reward for clearing all the trial chambers. I'm not using it, though.
So I'm about 4 hours into this old Squaresoft game called Vagrant Story. It's... really convoluted in its design. There's tons of stats and variables to keep track and a lot of rather esoteric combat mechanics.
These games are so fun. Those issues I mentioned aside, I'm enjoying every moment of VJ2. The levels are great, bosses are clever and there's just a lot of style and creativity everywhere. All the fourth wall breaking ("I'm not explaining who I am again. If you're curious, grab a copy of Viewtiful Joe 1 at your closest game store!"), and movie references. Clearly Clover had a lot of fun making these games.
I'm doing better at the combat too. Reel 4 boss was taking very little damage until I figured I should try dodging his sword instead of rushing when he was vulnerable. Easy stun. Cameo Leon is another boss that rewards you for interacting with his attacks the right way. Punch the bumpers and they turn into spiky bumpers, then send the boss pinballing to his death. Or hit the missiles to stun Dr. Cranken in the background for a stun. Voomerang to stunlock... throw a bomb and Slow the explosion... there are just enough alternatives for dealing with the bosses that they don't feel like you're locked by the same pattern over and over. Same goes for the big vehicles and Big John cameos.
Barely had time to play last night but I can finish tonight.
Finished Echoes, 100% items and scans. I took the time to read all the lore and scan all the objects for info. The game felt surprisingly fresh despite remembering everything I needed to do. Really had a blast.
Started Corruption, also feels fresh. The first part of the game has a ton of stuff to scan and I don't think I've paid this much attention to the detail of this game since it was new. There's a great deal of detail added to this game. I know I'm really going to enjoy this playthrough. I like it when I rediscover an older game and find a new appreciation for it.
