That's definitely true, I just think NSMB2 stands out as egregiously uninspired. Like, sometimes I forget it even exists, such was the impression it failed to leave. I'm still waiting for a game on the order of SMW that has a fully-connected world map, a power up as broken/awesome/fun as the Feather, and more levels with secret exits than not that cut obscene shortcuts through the intended sequence. So far they've all been spiritual successors to SMB3 more than any other entry.
