Yeah the game gives a lot of intentionally cryptic item descriptions, there's a good wiki where you can find out what all the items/trinkets/etc actually does, though for some figuring all of that out by yourself is part of the fun. Black and Blue hearts can extend your health beyond your current limit but they don't give you another heart container, so when you lose them you can't heal back up with red hearts. Black hearts have the added effect that they damage all enemies in a room when you lose one. When you get a message that something has appeared in the basement or whatever it basically means that you've unlocked something that can now appear in the game, like new items and bosses for example, but they'll only appear randomly like everything else in the game. Some doors are only open if you have full health and some will only open if you have less than one red heart.
Thanks now I think I understand a little bit more how the game works.
Still confused about 'charging'.  Charging who/what?

In what context?
IN the wiki they mention Isaac charging, and they say batteries are for charging.
I did vomit blood and I had to hold down the button for a few secs first.  Is that what they're talking about?

Well batteries charges the use item that you are currently holding (in the top left of the screen). Any use item takes between 1 to 6 charges to be usable, and you restore 1 charge for every room you clear, but a battery will fully charge the item instantly. There are also some other battery items that have various effects like letting you overcharge an item so it can be used twice, or requiring fewer charges to be used.

The other kind of charging is attacks that require you to hold attack for a while before firing, which is what it sounds like you mention in your second post.

I think a PSP Go-like design would be ideal for a cellphone/handheld hybrid. You'd have a normal touchscreen phone setup from the get-go, but you can turn it on its side, slide out the bottom portion, and have a video game controller setup ready to go.
I have the first Xperia Play, which is exactly that. I have checked out its hardware buttons, feels just a little bit small, but almost as comfortable as holding a snes gamepad, personally much better than the PsVita. The design is still pretty slick, only a little bit thicker than other smartphones to contain the gamepad slice. To me it is pretty much the ideal smartphone that makes handheld consoles obsolete. Unfortunately it didn't get much recognition, may be because it radiates a gamer vibe; And smartphone users don't like to be associated with that, despite of using their smartphones to just play games most of the time.

That's weird.  I'm playing the 3DS version and when you pick up a usable item it seems to totally disappear and never come back after one use.  I don't see any place on the subscreen or any where else indicating any recharge.

Well there are two types of usable items, first you have pills/cards/runes which are one time uses, and then there are items with various effects that can be used several times but requires a charge in between, and you can only hold one at a time, like the scissors in the picture below:
Got it.  TY
Finally beat Mom.  Each run is such a crapshoot because you can get one or two items that make all the difference in the world. I started looking up items before I touched them to avoid picking up things with negative effects.  Some runs just don't give you that much stuff so the difficulty varies each time, but that's one of the good things I'm picking up about random generation.  I finally succeeded with orbiting tears plus dully increased damage and range, and I had increased my speed four times and was moving super fast.  I wish you could shoot diagonally, though.  The cstick works for firing just like the buttons do, but I'm not sure which one I prefer.  There's SO much to find and unlock in this game.  Not sure if I could play it marathon style, but since the plays are relatively short it makes a good filler between games or when you need a break from another game.

Attempting a Handgun-only run in The Evil Within. I don't guarantee that I'll beat this, but it's been fun and I'm doing okay so far (at Chapter 11 on Nightmare mode). The game is much better with the letterbox disabled, and a little easier too (you can see ground traps/bodies more clearly now, and aiming throwable objects while crouched doesn't cut part of the visible trajectory anymore).

Wall of progress below.

On the one hand, I'm happy with how I handled certain ammo costly fights, like Sadist (used axes and environment/traps both times) and Sentinel (melee'd to death... that was clumsy, though, pretty sure I just got lucky). Water tank fight was also less tricky than I anticipated with only the pea shooter. I cleared the twin Trauma room in Chapter 10 on my first attempt by spamming grenades (had 6, threw 5 and prayed for the best). And I crushed Amalgam Alpha with about 15 Handgun ammo, 4 grenades and an explosive barrel. Kinda surprised by how effective that was.

On the other hand, I wasted too many resources in places that I wasn't patient enough to take my time. The burning house was being a pain, so I tossed two grenades that may or may not make a difference later on... and I failed to pick up a grenade drop there. The guillotine bit took like 7 shots and that was all my fault. The outdoor fight in Ch.6 was another awful one, but I partially blame the game for that... hitting those guys in the arrow boxes is literally random even with some accuracy upgrades.

Upgrades have been what you'd expect from this kind of run: sprint (4/5), Handgun damage (5/5), crit (4/5) and accuracy (4/5), stock for ammo (5/5) and grenades (5/5). I maxed out melee, maybe that was dumb. Still, I've been purposely avoiding anything related to HP, including life ups and syringe stuff. I hope my current equipment is enough for the infamous Ch.11 gauntlets... and the meat locker... and Quell...
I lied.  I guess I didn't kill mom.  When the credits came up, I thought I had, but it still says total mom kill = 0.  I've also had the game freeze on me like 10 times now, starting to get pissed.
Club 27 Goals
Yeah, in BoI you have to "beat" the game a few times. Each time you "beat" the game (see credits) it unlocks a little more after that point.

Damn, I hope they'll patch the 3DS version to get some stability. I have about 110 hours logged on BO:I Rebirth on steam and I don't even remember the last time it crashed.

I think the Mom kills start counting when you defeat Mom's Heart (two more floors after that Mom heel fight).
I'm going to report all of you to the police for domesticide.

I read that a lot of people are experiencing crashes.  The crashing came after their first patch, which fixed issues with invisible enemies and music turning off, but now it crashes regularly.  At least you get to start the floor over again when you reboot.

Finished the Handgun challenge in TEW. Inventory before the final boss.

It was very fun figuring out strats for the Handgun. I already felt like something was off when I did Agony Crossbow-less, and now it's like you're running naked without Shotgun, Rifle and stuff. Feels good getting through the entire game with only the pea shooter, though.

Next time I will probably attempt a no upgrade run on Nightmare. \o/

How's the DLC in TEW? I'm not purchasing the game anytime soon, but I'll eventually need to know whether I should get the base game for cheap or a version that comes with all the DLC.
Dood Trigger™
DLCs are definitely worth checking out IMO, just keep in mind that they're nowhere near as deep as the main game. The two story DLCs are super scripted and mostly focused on stealth. The third DLC is an arcade mode where you play as one of the bosses in first person view.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
Far Cry 4 ends pretty solid. It's not as meta as 3, but the choices it gives you have a lot more emotional weight to them than "should I kill my dumb girlfriend for absolutely no good reason?"
Dood Trigger™
Finished a quick game of Streets of Rage 2 as Skate. First time I beat this as Skate (he was the only character I hadn't beaten the game with yet).

He's a mixed bag. I like the dash and especially the dash jump attack that has incredible range and hits everything in its path. His throw is good too and he can get behind any enemy super fast. However, his normal attacks are just too weak, his jump sucks, and he has no health.

When I didn't have room to start a dash, enemies would easily gang up on me. And there were several parts where I couldn't figure out a reliable strategy at all. Lost five lives to the freaking boxer boss in stage 5... literally no idea how to deal with that guy as Skate. I thought I'd have to start over because I used my first continue as early as in stage 6, but luckily I got to the final boss with 5 lives on my last continue. Mr. X is a punching bag at least.
Finally killed mom's heart on BoI.  Then I did it again on the very next run.  The freezing of the game is really bad, though.  It happens about every 20 minutes or so, and you have to hold down the power button on the 3ds for a few seconds and reboot the whole thing, then restart the floor you were on. Can't believe they came out with a patch so quickly when there were some glitches with the music and the occasional invisible boss, but the problem the patch created (freezing) is just allowed to go on.
