every site is about instant updates, so you can't blame them for mistakes

and yeah i've enjoyed ign for years, just have to ignore the crap they post just for clicks
red chamber dream
i have no problem with it, every site needs to earn enough to feed its staff

just don't like when people assume it's a lucrative job ... these people are living in fucking san francisco and making dogshit pay
Quote from arkarian:
people get wayyyy too caught up in review scores, which don't matter at all ... actually read what's written in the review and you might be able to determine whether you'll like the game

I'll be brutally honest here. I just look at Metacritic scores and listen to word of mouth from friends and /v/ about games, lol.
red chamber dream
i look for reviewers i tend to agree with and thats mostly it

them and toozin because we agree on like 95% of games
Like... 99% of the games I bought in the last few years were because of good review scores and other people discussing in length as to why they were good.
red chamber dream
yeah totally, for me the appeal of reviews is reading the facts about the games, not the opinions ... i want to know what the art style is like, how the gameplay works, etc

that alone is usually enough for me to decide whether to buy

for me what's convinced me to play about 80% of all the games I've played this year were purely watching other people playing them and having a good time, and being like, yeah that looks fun. I have yet to regret a purchase. In fact the only times I can think of regretting buying a game was when I bought one purely based on name and screenshots (Sakura Spirit comes to mind)
That's cause you only play MEME GAMES

Oooh, speaking of Dota. The Internationl is happening in like a week. You should check it out if you have time.

so far this year in the glorious 2015 I've neither launched LoL nor DotA. Feels good. Mostly because LoL has gone to absolute shit with their management, there's a website where you can leave an anonymous review about the company you work for and the one for Riot is absolutely abysmal. you either fit in with their bro-tier mentality, work 14 hour days (but 10 of those 14 hours can be spent doing nothing but playing League and literally eating candy in the "candy room") and if you don't do that you're seen as someone who isn't a "team player". If you have a social life outside of work and don't include your work buddies, you're seen as a problem and not a "team player". It's pretty funny.

Dota is still cool though. That $16Mil prize pool must look pretty awesome by now, I think that's bigger than last years right?
Yep, bigger by $6 million.
Valve actually has a very solid rep with the pro scene. They help people get visas, make sure tourneys hand out money in time, etc.

Yeah it's a shame that Riot hasn't lost their money yet, I think they'd really shape up to be a better company when they do. Right now they just make so much from being popular and throwing around e-sports scene like they fuckin invented that shit, it's pretty bad. The rate they put out content now is laughable at best, and the only redeeming thing they've managed to do in the last 6 months was ban cheaters (after letting them have free-reign on the semi-professional scene for literally 2 years without putting up a fight).

I just miss the community feel back in season 1 and even season 2. At least with dota you can have fun with friends that aren't good in custom game modes and stuff.

Valve's been kind of hit or miss when it comes to cheaters. There's still a lot of proximity scripting going on, but they constantly try and hammer down issues like that ASAP.

Been playing a lot of NES lately, mostly childhood games I've been meaning to replay. Plus some stuff I only got to try recently.

I never had a NES as a kid, and as far as I can remember all I ever played on it as a kid was the first SMNB about once.

Never played the Zelda games either... or for not for long. In total I've maybe spent 10 minutes on both Zelda I & II. Something I should definitely change some day.

my main experiences with the nes as a kid were at my grandmother's - only person i knew who had one

luckily, she had smb/duck hunt, smb3, contra, startropics, and mega man 6 which let's face it are all you really need
That's a great selection, yeah.
I got an NES when they were new.  I was 12 or 13 or something like that.  It came with SMB, and I then bought zelda, metroid, castlevania, mega man, kid icarus, and many others all when they first came out. It's been cool to see all those things evolve from the beginning.  It was also cool to experience the excitement of witnessing gaming go from using a number of lives to get the highest score possible and then game over, to actually having a story unfold in an open world you could backtrack in and even save your progress.  Esp with Legend of Zelda.  That game made me realize that nothing would ever be the same.
HA and we'd all get our issue of nintendo power in the mail that would reveal the next cool game coming out, and they would always go over the first part of the game in detail like a guide, but it was before the game came out.  We would be SO excited for the new games when they came out.  I had no idea that I would still be marking calendars like a little kid nearly 3 decades later.

man i used to love nintendo power
me too. I miss NP  :(

I definitely don't blame you, both NES Zeldas took a while to finally grow on me. Now I really like 'em, though. :) Sweet games. Zelda 1 especially is super open and rewarding. I'm really excited that I still have the second quest to do.

Pulled a clutch victory in Double Dragon 2 early this morning. I lost one life at stage 4 (still not sure how to deal with Arnold and the rest of the level without a lot of luck), one at 5 (stupidly) and one at 6 (stupidly). But then I did 7, 8 and 9 with my last life. Final boss was a festival of pause strats and sweaty hands, but I clutched it out.

This game is great, but it really could have used some kind of extra lives/continue system because it literally does not allow you to make mistakes. You can start the game in 2P mode and steal the second player's lives, but I dunno, I always start a new game thinking I'm gonna do okay :\
