kinda worried that the combat system has remained the same, since it was the reason i couldn't finish arkham city

i'll definitely check out knight eventually though, just because it's batman

Ah, really? Well, the combat is indeed nearly identical. I understand that it's extremely simple (not really technical like Bayonetta or something), but it's so flashy and animated so well that I can get behind it even it is pretty repetitive.

And as for "just because it's Batman", I will say that all of these games are the absolute best ways to "feel" like Batman, whatever that means. I like the Nolan films, but I will say that Bale might not have believably portrayed the character as intimidating to criminals as you're able to Arkham Knight, for instance.

Right now, I would easily say that Asylum is my favorite, followed by City, followed by Knight. Haven't played Origins, but I've actually heard good things about it. What I'd really want is this same engine with an Adam West Batman. That would be the shiiit.

i really loved asylum, but city just didn't do it for me. the combat somehow never clicked like it did in asylum, and i never seemed to able to pull off the combos i wanted. i realize i'm just a dumbass but dunno, couldn't figure it out
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
I'm actually loving the Batmobile. Super fun zooming around the city annihilating everything, then launching yourself into the air and gliding around for a bazillion feet. I think it's integrated pretty well and going between car and foot is seamless no matter what you're doing.

Origins gets a bad rap. It's the worst in the series for sure but that doesn't make it bad. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

i dunno, i don't really hold the series in such high regard as most people ... asylum was good, but it wasn't amazing, and if a game isn't as good as asylum i'm not sure it's worth playing

That's interesting; I always found that the first game had the least polished and "clicky" combat.  Did very well at everything else, but there were just those couple of kinks to work out in the mook fights, and bosses were probably the biggest stain on its record.

The Batmobile is actually a really cool mechanic.  Everything about it is done well, I think it's just more that the developers have such a fetish for it that it just. keeps. happening.

How into Batman's mythology are you?  I know a big part of what keeps me coming back to the series as a whole is that even in its changes as an adaptation of the comics, it's really respectful and smart about its relationship to them.

i love batman, but city didn't do anything that wasn't already covered by asylum tbh
red chamber dream
city just had a huge, boring as fuck overworld with nothing to do and shitloads of crappy enemies
red chamber dream
asylum is a masterpiece in comparison

You won't like Knight then. The world is even bigger.

You weren't a fan of the Riddler and casefile sidequests, I take it?  I thought City had plenty to do.
Anywhere, everywhere
I thought Asylum WAS amazing, but it's entirely possible that I was just used to licensed properties from the PS2/GC era that were just dogshit. Like, I remember Spider-Man 2 being the "best" movie game out there, but I went back to it lately and it aged positivitely horribly.

Nah Asylum still holds up.
Anywhere, everywhere
And I liked the Riddler stuff a lot, hence why I like City, but I still like Asylum more. Knight is just a little off-putting right now with the Batmobile but that's how I am with most vehicles in games
I like turtles.
Could be worse, could be the incredibly arbitrary and poor-handling dune buggies in Jak 3.
Anywhere, everywhere
I call myself a Naughty Dog fan, but I've never played a single Jak
I like turtles.

the riddler sidequests were probably my favorite part of asylum. i hated how city turned them into bullshit tasks that took forever to figure out and do, and half of them you had to remember and come back to way later in the game

i don't mind as long as there's actually stuff to do in it.

turtle i'm so glad you didn't like the buggies in jak 3

god that game was awful ... and i fucking LOVED jak ii
red chamber dream
jak ii is a god damn masterpiece, if you haven't played that game, you really need to play the first jak and daxter

then play ii and go WTF, and then eventually love it

I loved 2 and 3, but the entire desert area was just incredibly annoying to me along with all the missions in it.  It kind of... ahem... MARred the experience that I felt was more pure in 2.

I think there's plenty to do, but I thought that about City as well so I dunno what to tell you.

3 was entirely the desert though, plus some boring-ass way underdeveloped city parts

what is there to do in city besides the riddler challenges? like the wing challenges or whatever, but those got so old so fast

There are, like, five different supervillains whose quests are almost completely optional.  And Azrael.

There were a lot of dungeons and missions and things that I liked, I guess.  I don't disagree with you on either of those counts, really, but I guess I found it to be greater than the sum of its parts?
