I would probably get HW for 3DS just to have a reason to replay it. 3D is nice, too. The stable 3D on the new 3DS is pretty nice. Most games I can now just leave the 3D slider all the way up and not have any focus issues at all.
I doubt graphics mean much of anything as long as it's playable.
This. This is something I've always had a problem with when it came to gaming. Growing up, I'd always hear "Why are you playing that? The graphics suck." Well, who the fuck cares about the graphics if the game is fun? [/pointless_rant]

I've always felt this way. My BF is always bitching about graphics as if they mattered. He also complains if anything 'looks like a cartoon'. Really? I once told a gamestop employee that I couldn't care less about graphics and he looked at me like I was from another planet. Seriously, who the fuck cares? I have a theory that people who care too much about graphics kind of suck at video games. Maybe that's why they love cutscenes and story too much, too.
it sounds like you care more than him lol. people are into what they're into and might have different opinions than you. if someone cares about graphics, that's what's important to them. maybe they're good at games or maybe not, but it's not like there's anything wrong with being bad at games if that were the case.
i actually care about visuals a lot and will totally play a game that doesn't have very fun gameplay if it looks nice—because the fun for me often comes from visuals, not gameplay. also, what's wrong with loving cutscenes and story? people who say story isn't important are like, aliens from another planet. one of the basic fundamental truths about humans is that we all love a good story. perhaps some of us care more about experiencing a story than gameplay gameplay gameplay. gameplay ain't everything.
I do prefer gameplay over graphics, don't get me wrong. But it's okay to like videogames for whatever reason you want. As long as you're having a good time, that's what matters. Same reason I don't mind when people cheat at games. Some people get really angry at the way others play videogames and that's real silly IMO.
That said, if someone looked funny at me 'cause I said I don't mind a game having bad graphics, I probably would have told them to go suck a big one...
Never said gameplay was everything. Story can definitely be important, but it isn't a requirement (I kinda like being dropped on an unknown planet, all alone, for some unknown reason.) There isn't anything inherently wrong with cut-scenes either (I do like a skip option, but whatever.) Some stories can't be told simply enough without cut-scenes and long story segments, and that's fine as some of those stories are most definitely worth it. If you're only there for story and cut-scenes though, they do make movies.
I simply don't understand your fun coming strictly from visuals. If the game controls and plays like utter shit, but looks visually on-par with the single greatest thing ever, I wouldn't play more than a few minutes of it. On the other end of the spectrum, I can go back to 8-bit games that controlled pretty well, and I can have a blast for hours.
I do get that people have different preferences and place them in different orders of importance, but for an interactive medium, I don't get how interactivity wouldn't be a priority. If the art in games was the most important bit, why not look at art or watch a movie? Perhaps a RTA movie, so you get some modicum of interactivity?
Playing a game, yet gameplay isn't important. That's just something I don't understand, while wishing I did. Perhaps it's like watching an old movie, even while the picture sucks, simply for the story? I don't know...
If someone thinks wind waker is a terrible game simply because it looks like a cartoon, then I'm going to call that bullshit. I'm not going to validate it just because it's someone's opinion.
And the theory about sucking at video games only comes from my narrow experience. I've noticed people who hate older games also happen to be really terrible at them, so it really seems like they're blaming the terrible graphics vs. their lack of skill.

I have noticed that trend as well. From what I've seen, It's usually either the really old people, or the youngest generation that bashes on graphics and automatically assume that bad graphics = bad game.
Of course it makes sense to not like a game if you're not good at it. It's the reason people give for not liking the game that's suspect. If I suck at a game, I try really hard to say that the game is just not for me vs. saying that there's something wrong with the game.
Marathon stuff: Day 7 - Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose. Gotta say I underestimated this game's hardest mode. But I did it. Not a fan of that flip attack or the dash, but it's a cool childhood game that I've been meaning to replay. Day 8 - Super Mario Land 2. Blind game. Short and easy, except for the final castle. That was tough! I loved it, though. Will find all the exits some other time. Day 9 - Currently halfway through The Evil Within, just a speedrun with OP weapons. Should make it in time for the achievement (finish in under 5 hours).
I hope I do like it when I try it again because I hear there's gonna be some major star fox buzz at E3 next week. It would be nice to get excited about it.
