I really don't know why I was so obsessed to play this, lol.
Not impossible
just highly unlikely
It's one of those games you just have to play because of its infamy. It doesn't hurt that you can easily find it for like $3. I myself own it.. I think. I might have gotten rid of it. I can't actually remember right now.

I think it actually has some pretty great ideas, and some moments almost feel like they knew what they were doing. But yeah, on the whole it feels very amateur and overly juvenile. Even ignoring the ridiculous development time, it's just not a well made game.
Dood Trigger™
Totally. And agreed on the good ideas. They do know how to create atmosphere at least, 'cause the Hive levels are really good at it.

Pity the game as a whole is so unpolished.

Picked up Witcher 3 but absolutely not playing it until I Get back from my trip on Monday.

I don't know what it is, but if I travel and take a trip then come back I just absolutely can't get back into whatever game I'm playing at the time. Like it breaks the cycle and I just don't really have that urge. Anyone know what I mean?

Run Samus, you can't go anywhere!
Lately, I've been TASing about on Hyper Metroid (for those who haven't played it yet, here: http://beta.metroidconstruction.com/hack.php?id=294).  There's also the rom itself, if the patches don't work:  http://www.begrimed.com/pb.php.  I'm enjoying this so far!

Level 17 in Duke Nukem Forever.

It does get a little better in the middle part of the game, if only because they don't throw too many frustrating battles at you, and you have a few more choices at least. But still pretty uninspired. For every room where you feel good coming up with your own strat, there's like 5 where you have to do exactly what the game wants (the turret fights are literally always the same thing, and there's not much you can do with the platforming). And while the campaign still has decent variety and the missions are never too long, you do spend way too many levels driving that stupid monster truck.

My weapons of choice since Duke Burger are the Shotgun (trusty all around) and the Shrink Ray. I haven't been using the Shrink Ray as much as I want because it's just hard to find ammo for it, but it shrinks tough enemies like armored pigs and the big floating dudes, so I don't want to get rid of it. The consumable items and mines have been mostly ignored unless they are forced... I just don't know of a good opportunity to use that stuff in the heat of battle. I used mines once to blow up a pig's shield, but other than that, I've no idea. Well, it's all saved there in case I run into desperate times.

Missed about 10 Ego boosts throughout the campaign. Maybe those few points won't make a difference, but I get stuck somewhere, I may redo some previous missions and find them. I wonder if you can go back to a previous mission and save the weapons you collect there for future missions.

Not sure I can finish tonight, but I'll try. 7 levels to beat, several of them two-parters. How hard is the end game, Toozin? Or anyone who's played this?

It's never really hard, as far as i can remember. You should breeze through no problem.

Limiting you to two weapons was probably the biggest sin that game committed. I mean, what the hell?
Super Secret Area - Dead Ahead!
Yeah, I don't recall there being any tough parts, or anywhere where it spiked anyway.
I just watched a couple of DNF videos.  Sheesh.
Dood Trigger™
It's pretty bad, haha. The biggest set piece I've seen so far was a chopper flying over a town. You can tell they made the game around the old DNF blueprint 'cause the physics puzzles are presented as if the game is super proud of them. And I guess they might have been impressive in 1998...

I'm not having the worst time, because as simplistic as the gameplay is, it is perfectly passable. The levels never outstay their welcome, and other than a couple of (IMO) unfair ambush fights, you figure everything out fast. I'm sure most of you guys would do better 'cause I'm really bad at FPSs.

But I mean, every other room you run into something that makes you say man, this is such a bad game. Sometimes it's so bad it's good, sometimes it makes you wonder why are you wasting your time with this (like pretty much every instance of "humor"). Most of the time, you're just playing a barely average game.

I paid $1 so I can't complain much. This game is such a weird part of gaming history, though, I just had to see it for myself.
The poop, boobs, and glory hole did it for me.

The whole alien ship part made me legitimately uncomfortable in its overwhelming mysogeny, and I'm not normally the type to be overly concerned about that kind of thing.
red chamber dream
i don't mind that stuff. it's all fiction
Not impossible

See, normally I'm the same way. It was just something about the whole thing that crossed some line for me, and I can't even put my finger on what it is.
One shall stand, one shall ball.
Probably the overwhelming garbage that was the game up to that point.
red chamber dream
but to me dnf is so over the top that that's what you'd expect it to contain
red chamber dream
i really, really hate when people get upset over stuff that doesn't harm anyone

it's totally useless and non-constructive
Dood Trigger™
I just don't find the stuff here clever or funny, regardless of how I may feel about the message. It's just really terrible execution in general. The gratuitous misogyny is like a Bizarro bonus that doesn't help the case.

I finished the game. The last few levels kinda un-did the fun of the middle part of the game, largely because of (why not?) underwater sections. I assume the game must be making an ironic statement about how awful these levels usually are... by including one or two... >_>

Final boss was okay. If the entire fight was the first pattern (just the RPG pigs) and then Devastator, it would have been sweet. But alas, on the second phase they just had to throw literally every enemy on screen while you're trying to find a shiny gun on the ground. Bleh.

There were some legit nice things about this game IMO. Shotgun, Freeze and Shrink Ray, Duke's voice and theme, a few of the levels, and the unlockables. The rest is mediocre at best, sometimes awful. Still, I had to play this game. And in a strange way, I'm glad I did. Definitely no hurry to revisit, though.

i don't find it clever or funny either, i just don't care

Anyone played Katamari Damacy, the very first one for PS2?

I got that game a while ago but never played it. I'm having fun cleaning my gaming backlog these past weeks. But I'd like to play a not very long game 'cause next week there's more Evil Within DLC. How long/difficult is Katamari for a complete newbie?

the main mode is actually somewhat difficult, but it shouldn't take you too long to get through. i played it a couple years ago and think i spent 2 or 3 nights with it. maybe 8 hours total.
Dood Trigger™
That's about the time I'm going to have. Should be fine. Thanks!
I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not, but Axiom Verge is fucking incredible.  I can't get enough of it!  About 10 hours, about 50% through.  I'm really taking my time because I'm in not hurry.  Finding some cool stuff.  Already can't wait to replay it.

Btw, I read today that Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is coming out for New 3DS and Wii U later this year.

All right, more backlog stuff (or less backlog stuff): Katamari Damacy.

This game is so charming and addicting, I love it! Been struggling with the controls, though... ironic since they are really quite simple. But I find turning kind of a pain, and the camera doesn't help when you get stuck (literally). To be fair, I've only played for about an hour and a half, so maybe I'll get used to it.

Speaking of an hour and a half, the game seems pretty short. But that's okay. I have most levels done already (most were beaten with the minimum diameter, true). The worlds are huge, so if I ever manage to unlock the eternal courses someday, I know I'll have a blast exploring them. This game is a collector's dream, or a nightmare depending on how obsessed you are with collecting hundreds and hundreds of items and not leaving anything behind.

Also, the music is wonderful!

I'll finish tomorrow.
So this retranslation patch came out for FF7 recently so I went ahead and replayed game for fun. The new dialogue definitely made more sense this time around with the way it handled Jenova manipulating Cloud and whatnot. So yeah, I had fun, the plot made a modicum of sense for once, and I beat the game in around 26 hours. I'm planning to either replay FF6 after this or try and beat Suikoden for the first time. I haven't committed too much to either game yet.
